Female Managers in Japan: How to Set the Goal of Increasing Women in Leadership Roles

    Get PDF
How to increase the number of female manager is still one of the contemporary issues in Japan. In comparison with other developed countries, Japan is far below others in terms of the level of employing women as management staffs. This paper was undertaken to shed light on the factors hindering the promotion of female manager in Japan workforce. It was also intended to discover more relevant improvement area that Japan government can consider to put more efforts in order to enhance the Japanese women for working as senior positions. The perspective of employee and employer are adopted for discussing and illustrating important insights which are considered able to explain the current phenomenon in Japan. On the other hand, a question from the survey of human resources management in Japanese companies in China (JCCs) which was conducted previously is used to further test if the factors of industry, location, company size, and years of business have any influence on the degree of employing women in management position of Japanese companies in China. According to the result by analyzing 180 valid response, 113 from Mainland China and 67 from Hong Kong, companies in servicing industries are likely to have higher percentage of female manager than those in manufacturing industries. A positive association existed between the industrial factor and percentage of female managers in JCCs

a b s t r a c t a r t i c l e i n f o Firms in transitional economies are learning to develop strategies to exploit new market opportunities though bounded by their lack of market experience and resources as well as institutional and cultural heritage. This paper examines the managerial orientations of top managers in the transitional economy of China by focusing on a firm's team and organizational resources. Specifically, the following antecedents motivate a firm to put more emphases on strategic orientations: the firm has an effective top management team, strong managerial competences, and when the firm has ample endowment of slack resources, social network, and support from the institutional environment. Empirical results support that team orientation, managerial competence, social network, and local institutional support are instrumental in developing market-focused strategic orientations. In addition, strategic orientations with heavy emphases on overall low costs and product innovation relate to higher firm performance

An investigation into how Japanese multinational corporations (MNCs) manage their overseas HRM practices affiliates and an exploration of the underlying factors affecting each practice could contribute to enhancing business knowledge and practice. This is especially important when taking into consideration the dramatic change in industry structure and business environment in China. This study adopted a quantitative survey method and analyzed 180 responses from employees of Japanese companies in China (JCCs); 113 from Mainland China and 67 from Hong Kong. Performance appraisal was rated the most important concern of the five human resource management (HRM) practices. Corporate policy and the complexity of the business were the main factors affecting decision for   expatriation from the viewpoint of headquarters and locals, respectively. Minor differences were observed in HRM practices in the manufacturing and the service sector, and location, age, and size of the companies

An intercomparison of intraseasonal variability in general circulation models and observations

Low frequency oscillations appearing in three GCM seasonal cycle integrations are compared with the analyses of the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF). All three models have the same resolution: 4 deg latitude by 5 deg longitude, with 9 levels. The dominant phase speeds and the differential vertical structure of the heating profiles in the GCMs are in general agreement with current theory involving the positive feedback between latent heating and moist static stability. All three GCMs fail to capture the detailed evolution in the different stages of the development and decay of the oscillation. The results suggest that an improvement in the boundary layer moisture processes may be crucial for a better simulation of the oscillation

This paper reviews the development and contribution of private businesses to the Chinese economy. The political and market environment are analyzed to picture the current position of private businesses in the national economy. Major characteristics of private businesses and their owners are presented through three survey results conducted in different periods. Managerial implications, in terms of macro environment, competition, resources, management structure and governance, and leadership and human resources are discussed

On day 22 of illness, generalized tonic-clonic convulsion developed in a 32-year-old woman with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Cerebrospinal fluid tested positive for SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV) by reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction. SARS-CoV may have caused an infection in the central nervous system in this patient

The first transcriptome sequencing and data analysis of the Javan mahseer (Tor tambra)

The Javan mahseer ( Tor tambra ) is one of the most valu- able freshwater fish found in Tor species. To date, other than mitogenomic data (BioProject: PRJNA422829), genomic and transcriptomic resources for this species are still lack- ing which is crucial to understand the molecular mechanisms associated with important traits such as growth, immune response, reproduction and sex determination. For the first time, we sequenced the transcriptome from a whole juve- nile fish using Illumina NovaSEQ60 0 0 generating raw paired- end reads. De novo transcriptome assembly generated a draft transcriptome (BUSCO5 completeness of 91.2% [Actinoptery- gii_odb10 database]) consisting of 259,403 putative tran- scripts with a total and N50 length of 333,881,215 bp and 2283 bp, respectively. A total count of 77,503 non-redundant protein coding sequences were predicted from the transcripts and used for functional annotation. We mapped the pre- dicted proteins to 304 known KEGG pathways with signal transduction cluster having the highest representation fol- lowed by immune system and endocrine system. In addi- tion, transcripts exhibiting significant similarity to previously published growth-and immune-related genes were identified which will facilitate future molecular breeding of Tor tambra
