    Enhanced black state induced by spatial silver nanoparticles in an electrochromic device

    The use of three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical indium tin oxide (ITO) branches of electrochromic devices (ECDs) is an effective approach for increasing the optical properties via localized surface plasmon resonance compared with two- dimensional nanostructured electrodes. ECDs with 3D branches were designed to operate in transparent, mirror and black states. Finite- difference time- domain simulation was used to find the electrical field distributions in three types of ECD: glass/ITO with Ag film, glass/ITO branches and glass/ITO branches with Ag nanoparticles. The ECDs had an optical transmittance of 73.76% in the transparent state, a reflectance of 79.77% in the mirror state and a reflectance of 8.78% in the black state. We achieved an ECD with high stability that can show similar to 10 000 switching cycles among the three states.113Ysciescopu

    Anomalous Transport in Sketched Nanostructures at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 Interface

    The oxide heterostructure LaAlO3/SrTiO3 supports a two-dimensional electron liquid with a variety of competing phases including magnetism, superconductivity and weak antilocalization due to Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Further confinement of this 2D electron liquid to the quasi-one-dimensional regime can provide insight into the underlying physics of this system and reveal new behavior. Here we describe magnetotransport experiments on narrow LaAlO3/SrTiO3 structures created by a conductive atomic force microscope lithography technique. Four-terminal local transport measurements on ~10-nm-wide Hall bar structures yield longitudinal resistances that are comparable to the resistance quantum h/e2 and independent of the channel length. Large nonlocal resistances (as large as 10^4 ohms) are observed in some but not all structures with separations between current and voltage that are large compared to the 2D mean-free path. The nonlocal transport is strongly suppressed by the onset of superconductivity below ~200 mK. The origin of these anomalous transport signatures is not understood, but may arise from coherent transport defined by strong spin-orbit coupling and/or magnetic interactions

    Long-term balloon indwelling technique for the treatment of single benign biliary stricture

    We aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of long-term balloon indwelling technique for the treatment of single benign biliary stricture. Five patients with single benign biliary stricture were included from December 2014 to November 2016. The patients were three men and two women with a mean age of 50 years (range, 30–65 years). A balloon catheter was inserted into the drainage catheter and emerged through the side hole of the catheter so that the balloon and drainage catheters could be placed together at the stricture site. Follow-up fluoroscopic examination was performed at least once every 2 weeks to evaluate the adequacy of expansion and location of the balloon. The balloon was reinflated at each session, and then removed after an approximately two-month indwelling period. The catheters used were 10–16 French and the diameter of indwelling balloons were 4–8 mm. The primary technical and clinical success rates were 100%. Maintenance of the balloon location was achieved in 25 of 26 follow-up fluoroscopic examinations (mean, 5.2 times per patient) with a rate of 96.1%. The mean follow-up period after successful removal of the balloon was 542.2 days (range, 93–1042 days), and there were no recurrences in the five cases. The long-term balloon indwelling technique is a good way to induce maximal dilatation at the stricture site without large diameter skin and subcutaneous tract dilatation and can be successfully used for single benign biliary stricture

    Eosinophilic Otitis Media: CT and MRI Findings and Literature Review

    Eosinophilic otitis media (EOM) is a relatively rare, intractable, middle ear disease with extremely viscous mucoid effusion containing eosinophils. EOM is associated with adult bronchial asthma and nasal allergies. Conventional treatments for otitis media with effusion (OME) or for chronic otitis media (COM), like tympanoplasty or mastoidectomy, when performed for the treatment of EOM, can induce severe complications such as deafness. Therefore, it should be differentiated from the usual type of OME or COM. To our knowledge, the clinical and imaging findings of EOM of temporal bone are not well-known to radiologists. We report here the CT and MRI findings of two EOM cases and review the clinical and histopathologic findings of this recently described disease entity

    Single-Session Percutaneous Mechanical Thrombectomy for Acute and Subacute Deep Vein Thrombosis: Clinical Outcomes and Predictive Factors of Recurrence

    Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of single-session percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy (PMT) for deep vein thrombosis (DVT), to compare clinical outcomes and recurrences between acute and subacute DVT, and to identify factors predicting recurrence. Materials and Methods: From January 2018 to March 2021, 100 consecutive patients (age: 64.64 ± 17.28 years; male, 42%) with symptomatic DVT who underwent single-session PMT were enrolled for this study. These patients were divided into an acute DVT group (< 14 days, n = 75) and a subacute DVT group (15–28 days, n = 25). Results: A large-bore aspiration thrombectomy was used in 80 (80%) cases, Angiojet (Boston Scientific, Marlborough, MA, USA) device in one (1%) case, and a combination of both techniques in 19 (19%) cases. The anatomic success rate was 97% and the clinical success rate was 95%. There were no major complications. Clinical outcomes were not different between the two groups. The recurrence-free survival rate in the acute DVT group was significantly (p = 0.015) better than that in the subacute DVT group. The anatomic success (HR, 52.3; 95% CI, 3.82–715.21; p = 0.003) and symptom duration (HR, 17.58; 95% CI, 1.89–163.34; p = 0.012) were predictive factors associated with recurrence. Conclusions: Single-session PMT is safe and effective for immediate symptom relief in acute and subacute DVT patients. However, recurrence occurred more frequently in patients with subacute DVT than in those with acute DVT. Anatomic success of the procedure and duration of symptoms were independent predictors of DVT recurrence

    Transcatheter Arterial Embolization Therapy for a Massive Polycystic Liver in Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease Patients

    Polycystic liver is the most common extra-renal manifestation associated with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), comprising up to 80% of all features. Patients with polycystic liver often suffer from abdominal discomfort, dyspepsia, or dyspnea; however, there have been few ways to relieve their symptoms effectively and safely. Therefore, we tried transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE), which has been used in treating hepatocellular carcinoma. We enrolled four patients with ADPKD in Seoul National University Hospital, suffering from enlarged polycystic liver. We embolized the hepatic arteries supplying the dominant hepatic segments replaced by cysts using polyvinyl alcohol particles and micro-coils. The patients were evaluated 12 months after embolization for the change in both liver and cyst volumes. Among four patients, one patient was lost in follow up and 3 patients were included in the analysis. Both liver (33%; 10%) and cyst volume (47.7%; 11.4%) substantially decreased in two patients. Common adverse events were fever, epigastric pain, nausea, and vomiting. We suggest that TAE is effective and safe in treating symptomatic polycystic liver in selected ADPKD patients
