Resolving Between-Language and Within-Language Competition in Bilinguals

Friesen et al. (2011) reported behavioural and electrophysiological differences in how monolinguals and bilinguals resolved lexical competition in a picture selection task (PST). Participants selected a named picture from two alternatives that were related semantically, phonologically, or unrelated. Both groups were slower on related pairs, but the additional RT cost on semantically-related pairs was smaller for bilinguals than for monolinguals. Importantly, monolinguals exhibited attenuated N400s for semantically-related pairs while bilinguals did not. The current study pursued these results with a homogeneous group of English-French bilinguals performing the task in both languages. Measures of executive control, language proficiency, and language production abilities were acquired to investigate their influence in resolving interlingual and intralingual competition. In both languages, semantic pairs generated longer RTs than phonological and unrelated pairs and as in the earlier study, there was no modulation of the N400. There was no evidence for a relation between the PST and the flanker task. However, a relation was found between vocabulary knowledge and the PST in the weaker language

In this paper, an IAQ monitoring system, which uses CO2 sensor modules and a data processing module with CDMA communication capabilities for the transmission and management of the measurement results, was implemented. Through some experimental studies, we believe that the implemented IAQ monitoring system would be helpful in protecting many people from the dangers associated with indoor pollutants exposure

Applicaton of USB Serial Communication to Radon Measuring System

The USB serial communication such as USB-Serial-for PC and USB-Serial-for-Android is studied in order to monitor the measure radon data using a PC screen or a smart phone screen. Through some experimental studies, we believe that the USB serial communication module is useful for checking the data transmitted to a PC from a microcontroller

Does language context impact the neural correlates of executive control in monolingual and multilingual young adults?

Some previous studies have shown that creating a language context in which words from both languages are interspersed into a flanker task improves executive control performance for bilinguals, but these studies have produced inconsistent results. The studies have used different versions of the task and not included monolinguals, limiting generalization. Here, English-Chinese multilinguals and English monolinguals performed a flanker task while EEG was recorded. There were three language context blocks – English, Chinese, or both – and participants were instructed to ignore the interspersed words. Multilinguals displayed faster flanker RTs and earlier P2 and N2 waveforms than monolinguals. There was also a significant correlation between the P2/N2 latency and reaction times, connecting these waveforms to behavior. Finally, P2 amplitude differed between groups in the mixed context, and language context impacted P3 amplitude for monolinguals but not multilinguals. These results are interpreted in terms of language context effects on monolingual executive function processing and possible difference in bilingual experience between current participants and those in previous studies

oxoplasmosis is one of the most widespread parasitic zoonoses in the world and represents the second most etiological agent is produced by Toxoplasma gondii, a obligate intracellular protozoan that multiplies in living cells. Infection can be acquired by mouth, transplacentally, or through contact with potentially contaminated materials such as cat feces. The aim of this research was to describe the morbidity rate of congenital toxoplasma. The methodology was a documentary narrative review. We searched for scientific articles in databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Redalyc and Medigraphic, Pediactric Infect, Journal of American Health, Med. Exp where the terms MeSH were used: "Congenital toxoplasmoxis","morbidity rate", "clinical manifestations", "laboratory diagnosis". Among the inclusion criteria are articles from different countries published in Spanish, English and Portuguese. Regarding the results, in terms of morbidity and mortality rate of congenital toxoplasma in newborns the prevalence was 45%, Global exposure to T. gondii is high (30% in the U.S., and 50-80% in Europe). the clinical manifestations were neurological problems the mainones, hydrocephalus. risk of miscarriage, premature births, miscarriages, congenital.
