Rare-earth ions doped transparent oxyfluoride glass-ceramics

    No full text
In recent years, rare-earth ions doped transparent oxyfluoride glass-ceramics have attracted great attentions for their low phonon energy environments of fluoride nanocrystals and high chemical and mechanical stabilities of oxide glassy matrix. In this chapter, firstly, the crystallization behaviors of the transparent glass ceramics containing CaF2 nanocrystals are presented to demonstrate the controllable microstructure evolution of nano-composites. Secondly, the optical properties of the newly developed transparent glass-ceramics containing β-YF3 nanocrystals are systematically reviewed. The rare-earth ions are inclined to partition into the YF3 nanocrystals after crystallization. Through variation of the rare-earth doping and control of the microstructures, the glass-ceramics could exhibit high-stimulated emission cross-section, broadband near infrared emission, high efficient ultraviolet upconversion emission and bright white light emission, indicating their potential multifunctional applications in solid state laser, upconversion, optical amplifier, three-dimensional display, and so on

Cellular thermosetting fluoropolymers and process for making them

    Get PDF
Thermosetting fluoropolymer foams are made by mixing fluid from thermosetting fluoropolymer components having a substantial fluoride content, placing the mixture in a pressure tight chamber, filling the chamber with a gas, at a relatively low pressure, that is unreactive with the fluoropolymer components, allowing the mixture to gel, removing the gelled fluoropolymer from the chamber and therafter heating the fluoropolymer at a relatively low temperature to simultaneously cure and foam the fluoropolymer. The resulting fluoropolymer product is closed celled with the cells storing the gas employed for foaming. The fluoropolymer resins employed may be any thermosetting fluoropolymer including fluoroepoxies, fluoropolyurethanes and fluoroacrylates

Tellurite and phospho-tellurite glasses: candidate materials for fiber Raman amplifiers

    No full text
The necessity of materials innovation in the field of Raman amplification is reviewed. A new family of tellurite and phospho-tellurite glasses containing heavy metal oxides suitable for ultra-broadband Raman amplification was designed and fabricated. These glasses show enhanced properties than the silica based glasses studied so far for the Raman amplifier application. In addition to the bandwidth, the gain characteristics of these glasses were proved to be much higher than those of the silica based materials. The various structural units which contribute to the overall Raman band were unravelled. Accordingly Raman band engineering was used to tailormake glass compositions with wide continuous Raman bands. This chapter also details the enhanced thermal properties of these glasses suitable for fiber fabrication and the third order nonlinear optical properties which are essential for optical switching and other nonlinear optical effects
