    Promoting Molecular Exchange on Rare-Earth Oxycarbonate Surfaces to Catalyze the Water-Gas Shift Reaction

    It is highly desirable to fabricate an accessible catalyst surface that can efficiently activate reactants and desorb products to promote the local surface reaction equilibrium in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, rare-earth oxycarbonates (Ln2O2CO3, where Ln = La and Sm), which have molecular-exchangeable (H2O and CO2) surface structures according to the ordered layered arrangement of Ln2O22+ and CO32- ions, are unearthed. On this basis, a series of Ln2O2CO3-supported Cu catalysts are prepared through the deposition precipitation method, which provides excellent catalytic activity and stability for the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction. Density functional theory calculations combined with systematic experimental characterizations verify that H2O spontaneously dissociates on the surface of Ln2O2CO3 to form hydroxyl by eliminating the carbonate through the release of CO2. This interchange efficiently promotes the WGS reaction equilibrium shift on the local surface and prevents the carbonate accumulation from hindering the active sites. The discovery of the unique layered structure provides a so-called "self-cleaning" active surface for the WGS reaction and opens new perspectives about the application of rare-earth oxycarbonate nanomaterials in C1 chemistry

    Differential Expression of Copper-Zinc Superoxide Dismutase Gene of Polygonum sibiricum Leaves, Stems and Underground Stems, Subjected to High-Salt Stress

    In aerobic organisms, protection against oxidative damage involves the combined action of highly specialized antioxidant enzymes, such as copper-zinc superoxide dismutase. In this work, a cDNA clone which encodes a copper-zinc superoxide dismutase gene, named PS-CuZnSOD, has been identified from P. sibiricum Laxm. by the rapid amplification of cDNA ends method (RACE). Analysis of the nucleotide sequence reveals that the PS-CuZnSOD gene cDNA clone consists of 669 bp, containing 87 bp in the 5′ untranslated region; 459 bp in the open reading frame (ORF) encoding 152 amino acids; and 123 bp in 3′ untranslated region. The gene accession nucleotide sequence number in GenBank is GQ472846. Sequence analysis indicates that the protein, like most plant superoxide dismutases (SOD), includes two conserved ecCuZnSOD signatures that are from the amino acids 43 to 51, and from the amino acids 137 to 148, and it has a signal peptide extension in the front of the N-terminus (1–16 aa). Expression analysis by real-time quantitative PCR reveals that the PS-CuZnSOD gene is expressed in leaves, stems and underground stems. PS-CuZnSOD gene expression can be induced by 3% NaHCO3. The different mRNA levels’ expression of PS-CuZnSOD show the gene’s different expression modes in leaves, stems and underground stems under the salinity-alkalinity stress

    Epidemiologic characterization of 30 confirmed cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus in Hangzhou, China

    BACKGROUND: We examined the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of 30 cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus in Hangzhou and investigated their external environments to provide evidence for contact tracing and disease prevention and control. METHODS: The cases confirmed from April 1 through May 1, 2013 were studied. Field epidemiologic surveys were conducted to collect the clinical and epidemiologic data. Case-related and environmental specimens were collected for etiologic detection. RESULTS: Thirty cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus were confirmed in Hangzhou from April 1 through May 1, 2013, including one pregnant woman and three deaths. The median age of the patients was 62 years (range: 38–86 years). Twenty-three of the patients were men (76.67%). The median duration between disease onset and occurrence of respiratory failure and confirmed diagnosis was 5 and 6 days, respectively. Maximum medical observation of 666 close contacts of the patients revealed no irregularity. Of 314 external environmental specimens, the overall positive detection rate of H7N9 nucleic acid was 28.98%. Eight districts of Hangzhou city had positive detections in the external environments, the highest rate being in Yuhang District (78.13%). Statistical analysis of the specimen collection locations indicates a significant difference between the case-linked locations and the non-case locations (χ( 2 ) = 16.563, p < 0.05) in terms of H7N9 viral nucleic acid detection rate. No epidemiologic link has been found among the 30 cases. CONCLUSIONS: Most of the infected were retired individuals aged 60 years or older. Men made the majority. The cases are sporadic at present, with no evidence of human-to-human transmission. Exposures to poultry and live poultry markets may be important sources of infection

    Results of accelerated trans-epithelial corneal collagen cross-linking protocol for the treatment of progressive keratoconus

    AIM: To report the long-term clinical outcomes of accelerated trans-epithelial corneal cross-linking(CXL)protocols using KXL System(Avedro, USA)in the treatment of progressive keratoconus.METHODS: Totally 52 patients(102 eyes)with progressive keratoconus between December 2014 and February 2017 \〖maximum keratometry values(Kmax)≤60.0D, minimum corneal thickness(Thk)≥400m\〗 were treated with an accelerate trans-epithelial CXL protocol(UV-A irradiation intensity 45mW/cm2 with a total fluence of 7.2J/cm2)using KXL system(Avedro, USA)in Southwest Hospital. The average follow-up time was 11.65mo(range: 9-26mo). Uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA), intra-ocular pressure(IOP), slit-lamp microscope examination, Kmax and average keratometry values(AveK), corneal stromal demarcation line depth and endothelial cell density(ECD)were evaluated.RESULTS: The 52 patients(102 eyes)were included in this research, male 36(70 eyes)and female 16(32 eyes), average age was 19.5±4.6 years. Preoperative CDVA was 0.84±0.89(LogMAR), postoperative CDVA was 0.69±0.72(P=0.398). Preoperative UDVA was 1.02±0.62(LogMAR), postoperative UDVA was 0.85±0.59(P=0.154). Preoperative IOP was 12.95±4.40mmHg, postoperative IOP was 11.92±3.66mmHg(P=0.272). No statistical difference(P=0.552)has been found between preoperative and postoperative ECD. Nevertheless, on the Sirius anterior system(Sirius, CSO, Itlay), significant statistical difference(P=0.017)was confirmed between preoperative Kmax(50.83±3.48D)and postoperative Kmax(52.05±3.63D). Meanwhile, the postoperative Avek(47.74±2.51D)was significantly lower(P=0.041)than the preoperative Avek(48.73±4.33D). The average corneal stromal demarcation line depth(192±23.6μm)was detected by the anterior segment OCT. No statistical difference(P=0.816)has been found between preoperative and postoperative Thk. No severe complication was observed in all cases.CONCLUSION: Accelerated trans-epithelial CXL was effective in decreasing keratometry values for progressive keratoconus in this research, and the outcomes remained stable during the follow-up time. No endothelium damage or other severe complications were observed in this clinical research. The accelerated trans-epithelial CXL is as effective as the standard CXL

    A simulation study on the measurement of D0-D0bar mixing parameter y at BES-III

    We established a method on measuring the \dzdzb mixing parameter yy for BESIII experiment at the BEPCII e+ee^+e^- collider. In this method, the doubly tagged ψ(3770)D0D0\psi(3770) \to D^0 \overline{D^0} events, with one DD decays to CP-eigenstates and the other DD decays semileptonically, are used to reconstruct the signals. Since this analysis requires good e/πe/\pi separation, a likelihood approach, which combines the dE/dxdE/dx, time of flight and the electromagnetic shower detectors information, is used for particle identification. We estimate the sensitivity of the measurement of yy to be 0.007 based on a 20fb120fb^{-1} fully simulated MC sample.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
