Campus Apartment Architecture Style and Likelihood to Graduate: An Exploratory Study at a Southern Public Liberal Arts University

    Get PDF
Because of increased opportunities for social interaction, undergraduate students living on campus are more likely to persist and graduate than their counterparts.  Residence hall design also contributes to student interaction.  This study explores the relationship between campus apartment design and graduation rates of a sophomore cohort attending a southern public liberal arts university.  Initial findings indicate students living in a communal apartment complex were more likely to graduate than those living in traditional complexes; a multivariate logistic regression finds the strongest predictors of graduation are race/ethnicity and semester credit hours earned.  Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed

    Electroproduction of the d* dibaryon

The unpolarized cross section for the electroproduction of the isoscalar Jπ=3+J^\pi = 3^+ di-delta dibaryon d∗d^* is calculated for deuteron target using a simple picture of elastic electron-baryon scattering from the ΔΔ(7D1)\Delta \Delta (^7D_1) and the NN(3S1)NN (^3S_1) components of the deuteron. The calculated differential cross section at the electron lab energy of 1 GeV has the value of about 0.24 (0.05) nb/sr at the lab angle of 10∘^\circ (30∘^\circ) for the Bonn B potential when the dibaryon mass is taken to be 2.1 GeV. The cross section decreases rapidly with increasing dibaryon mass. A large calculated width of 40 MeV for d∗(ΔΔ7S3)d^*(\Delta\Delta ^7S_3) combined with a small experimental upper bound of 0.08 MeV for the d∗d^* decay width appears to have excluded any low-mass d∗d^* model containing a significant admixture of the ΔΔ(7S3)\Delta\Delta (^7S_3) configuration.Comment: 11 journal-style pages, 8 figure

A Unique Seasonal Pattern in Phytoplankton Biomass in Low-Latitude Waters in the South China Sea

A distinctive seasonal pattern in phytoplankton biomass was observed at the South East Asian Time series Study (SEATS) station (18°N, 116°E) in the northern South China Sea (SCS). Surface chlorophyll-a, depth integrated chlorophyll-a and primary production were elevated to 0.3 mg/m3, ~35 mg/m2 and 300 mg-C/m2/d, respectively, in the winter but stayed low, at 0.1 mg/m3, ~15 mg/m2 and 110 mg-C/m2/d as commonly found in other low latitude waters, in the rest of the year. Concomitantly, soluble reactive phosphate and nitrate+nitrite in the mixed layer also became readily detectable in the winter. The elevation of phytoplankton biomass coincided approximately with the lowest sea surface temperature and the highest wind speed in the year. Only the combined effect of convective overturn by surface cooling and wind-induced mixing could have enhanced vertical mixing sufficiently to make the nutrients in the upper nutricline available for photosynthetic activities and accounted for the higher biomass in the winter

    Data-driven image color theme enhancement

Proceedings of the 3rd ACM SIGGRAPH Asia 2010, Seoul, South Korea, 15-18 December 2010It is often important for designers and photographers to convey or enhance desired color themes in their work. A color theme is typically defined as a template of colors and an associated verbal description. This paper presents a data-driven method for enhancing a desired color theme in an image. We formulate our goal as a unified optimization that simultaneously considers a desired color theme, texture-color relationships as well as automatic or user-specified color constraints. Quantifying the difference between an image and a color theme is made possible by color mood spaces and a generalization of an additivity relationship for two-color combinations. We incorporate prior knowledge, such as texture-color relationships, extracted from a database of photographs to maintain a natural look of the edited images. Experiments and a user study have confirmed the effectiveness of our method. © 2010 ACM.postprin

Three-body decay of the d* dibaryon

Under certain circumstances, a three-body decay width can be approximated by an integral involving a product of two off-shell two-body decay widths. This ``angle-average'' approximation is used to calculate the πNN\pi NN decay width of the d∗(Jπ=3+,T=0)d^*(J^\pi=3^+, T=0) dibaryon in a simple Δ2\Delta^2 model for the most important Feynman diagrams describing pion emissions with baryon-baryon recoil and meson retardation. The decay width is found to be about 0.006 (0.07, 0.5) MeV at the d∗d^* mass of 2065 (2100, 2150) MeV for input dynamics derived from the Full Bonn potential. The smallness of this width is qualitatively understood as the result of the three-body decay being ``third forbidden''. The concept of ℓ\ell forbiddenness and the threshold behavior of a three-body decay are further studied in connection with the πNN\pi NN decay of the dibaryon d′(Jπ=0−,T=0or2)d'(J^\pi=0^-, T=0 or 2) where the idea of unfavorness has to be introduced. The implications of these results are briefly discussed.Comment: 15 pages, RevTeX, two-column journal style, six figure

The synthesis of trifluoromethylated N-nitroaryl-2-amino-1,3-dichloropropane derivatives and their evaluation as potential anti-cancer agents

    Get PDF
Six N-nitroaryl-2-amino-1,3-dichloropropane derivatives have been prepared and evaluated against 18 cancer cell lines and two non-cancerous cell lines. Analysis of cell viability data and IC50 values indicated that the presence of a trifluoromethyl group in the nitroaryl moiety is an important structural feature associated with the compounds’ cytotoxicities
