Human-psyche trafficking and human physical trafficking diverge: the former leaves one at his social milieu; the latter lifts one to another social environment. The English language, invading Africa, is changing Africa’s world-views, wrecking cultural perspectives and gradually overpowering many languages. This bare-faced blow on indigenous languages, pivotal channels for cultural transmission and retention, has made many start thinking in English, acting out English culture, believing in everything English and dreaming of living perpetually as the English. This is the human-psyche trafficking this paper sets out to introduce as a seminal inspiration for further evaluation and onward repudiation

Social media conversational and digital technology has redefined the communication landscape between consumers and the providers of goods and services. It has created a conversational dual carriageway among all interest groups. Increasingly, organizations and corporations are participating in the social media conversation for some good reasons: to engage customers and to get business in creative ways. The goal of this study was to assess the role of social media in the construction industry, considering that consumers are increasingly influenced by social media information. The limited documentation regarding the construction industry despite distribution cravings in current social media was the main driver of this study. The study started with a literature review covering the influence of social media on industries’ business landscape with emphasis on construction industry. To acquire qualitative information, oral interviews were conducted. Participants were from four major construction companies operating in Southern to Midwestern states (Carolinas to Arizona and Hawaii) in the United States of America. The results acknowledged industries’ increased awareness of the influence of social media on the consumers. According to the study, industries that engaged their audiences on social media were banking on the optimism of social media audience, business, and information reach advantages and ability to build community of social network at affordable cost. Also, it was found that construction industry is not actively participating in the social media conversation like many other industries. Many actors in the industry decided to stay aloof because they believe that social media conversation is a double-edged sword and very dangerous

    Dark Is Not Fair

Overview: Colorism is when individuals with darker complexions are faced with prejudice and discrimination because of their skin. Colorism is an issue that affects dark skinned people all around the world and is commonly perpetrated by people of the same race. Dark-skinned Black girls face a disadvantage from birth due to their skin tone. They feel a heavy burden to be accepted and valued by others as they grow up in a society that thinks of them as inferior. Unfortunately, the darker you are the more inferior you get. Toni Morrison’s novel, The Bluest Eye, hauntingly captures this reality by embodying all of the physical characteristics that are seen as ugly or lesser by both White and Black people in a character named Pecola. By examining Pecola and the circumstances she is in, we can see that negative attitudes toward dark skinned Black females are ingrained in our society and that from young ages, dark-skinned Black girls share feelings of low self-worth brought on by things like the media, beauty standards, and traumatizing relationships which ultimately ruin mental health. Author\u27s reflection: My name is Rachael Chukwu and I am currently a sophomore and majoring in nursing and minoring in Spanish. My second semester of freshman year was when I took the ENGL 1299 research writing class called Race in America with professor Reagan. At first I did not know what I was going to write about but when we read The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison in class I knew immediately what I wanted to write about. I am very passionate about the topic of colorism as I’ve seen instances of it growing up and even experienced it a couple of times. Although I am also Black I know colorism affects darker skinned people at an even greater rate than people who are my complexion. I really wanted to unravel the mental and emotional distress that colorism causes. This is the first research paper I’ve written and it was an enlightening experience to think deeply about a topic and find so many different peer-reviewed journal articles and learn even more along the way. My writing skills have definitely improved from taking this class as well as my research skills. Professor Regan supported me and was a good mentor throughout my time in the class. ENGL 1299 made me realize that writing can be an interesting process when it is about something you resonate with

A Semiological Irony in the Life of Man: an Assessment of Lawrence’s the Colossus of Rhodes

Language is a channel for expressing literary imagination; without language there will be no literature. Caraline Lawrence’s text, The Colossus of Rhodes, demonstrates this reality via language elements. Making use of linguistic signs – words and sentences -, she gives a picturesque parallelcontest between minors, and a gangster kingpin selling kidnapped children into slavery. This kingpin likened with gigantic human material artifact, theColossus of Rhodes, considers himself invincible past as the erectors of the colossus consider it impregnable. Nevertheless, the kingpin meets hiswaterloo at the hands of these minors just as the material colossus  succumbs to earthquake, a natural disaster. This situational irony forwarded in readable language is laced with some other literary techniques – parallelism, symbolism, paradoxism, reversal of situation, and mode of narration - made possible by words and sentences to elicit pleasing disposition of man. This piece of writing therefore strives to point out that words and sentences (semiotics) encapsulate the associative use of language impossible to be projected without obedience to the linguistic levels of word formation (morphology), of arranging words sequentially (syntax) and of using words meaningfully (semantics); levels fully realized whenever any of these grammatical units – morpheme, word, phrase, clause, sentence - is distributed contextually

English for Specific Purposes is introduced to take care of individual differences of learners - it is learner-centred oriented. This principle underlying this approach to teaching strives to emphasize motivating learners to learn by relating language teaching to field or subject of interest to learners: words and structures reflecting nuances of their pursuing subject specialism. This paper therefore presents the reasons for ESP as well as the fundamentals of ESP to the learner, the teacher, society, on syllabus designing, on material production, and on methodology for realizing ESP teaching goal. Together with these essentials of ESP, the pivotal position of the teacher in accomplishing educational philosophy of society is considered, but the overwhelming problem now is that teaching at all levels is bedevilled by mediocrities. Can ESP expectations be realized in Nigeria

Graphological Elegance of English Punctuation Notations

The media of writing and spoken language generally have the grammatical units-morpheme, word, phrase, clause, sentence - as the element for encoding ideas. Semantically, these units have ideas about the real world embodied in them, and structurally, they adhere to the rules of the syntax of English. However, this graphological signifier and signified linearly arranged to communicate thought remain meaningless without a careful embellishment of writing and speech with punctuation notation. This paper subsumes, via documentary examination, the elegance of the accurate use of punctuation notations, the implications of correct application to writing and speech, and the necessity of being mindful of these fundamental language tools enriching writing and speech with elegance, coherence, and endearment. Added to the purpose of this paper is a tip on proper capitalization the careful use of which marks one out as being intimate with the mechanics of the language
