High Performance Local Oscillator Design for Next Generation Wireless Communication
Local Oscillator (LO) is an essential building block in modern wireless radios. In modern wireless radios, LO often serves as a reference of the carrier signal to modulate or demod- ulate the outgoing or incoming data. The LO signal should be a clean and stable source, such that the frequency or timing information of the carrier reference can be well-defined. However, as radio architecture evolves, the importance of LO path design has become much more important than before. Of late, many radio architecture innovations have exploited sophisticated LO generation schemes to meet the ever-increasing demands of wireless radio performances.
The focus of this thesis is to address challenges in the LO path design for next-generation high performance wireless radios. These challenges include (1) Congested spectrum at low radio frequency (RF) below 5GHz (2) Continuing miniaturization of integrated wireless radio, and (3) Fiber-fast (>10Gb/s) mm-wave wireless communication.
The thesis begins with a brief introduction of the aforementioned challenges followed by a discussion of the opportunities projected to overcome these challenges.
To address the challenge of congested spectrum at frequency below 5GHz, novel ra- dio architectures such as cognitive radio, software-defined radio, and full-duplex radio have drawn significant research interest. Cognitive radio is a radio architecture that opportunisti- cally utilize the unused spectrum in an environment to maximize spectrum usage efficiency. Energy-efficient spectrum sensing is the key to implementing cognitive radio. To enable energy-efficient spectrum sensing, a fast-hopping frequency synthesizer is an essential build- ing block to swiftly sweep the carrier frequency of the radio across the available spectrum. Chapter 2 of this thesis further highlights the challenges and trade-offs of the current LO gen-
eration scheme for possible use in sweeping LO-based spectrum analysis. It follows by intro- duction of the proposed fast-hopping LO architecture, its implementation and measurement results of the validated prototype. Chapter 3 proposes an embedded phase-shifting LO-path design for wideband RF self-interference cancellation for full-duplex radio. It demonstrates a synergistic design between the LO path and signal to perform self-interference cancellation.
To address the challenge of continuing miniaturization of integrated wireless radio, ring oscillator-based frequency synthesizer is an attractive candidate due to its compactness. Chapter 4 discussed the difficulty associated with implementing a Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) with ultra-small form-factor. It further proposes the concept sub-sampling PLL with time- based loop filter to address these challenges. A 65nm CMOS prototype and its measurement result are presented for validation of the concept.
In shifting from RF to mm-wave frequencies, the performance of wireless communication links is boosted by significant bandwidth and data-rate expansion. However, the demand for data-rate improvement is out-pacing the innovation of radio architectures. A >10Gb/s mm-wave wireless communication at 60GHz is required by emerging applications such as virtual-reality (VR) headsets, inter-rack data transmission at data center, and Ultra-High- Definition (UHD) TV home entertainment systems. Channel-bonding is considered to be a promising technique for achieving >10Gb/s wireless communication at 60GHz. Chapter 5 discusses the fundamental radio implementation challenges associated with channel-bonding for 60GHz wireless communication and the pros and cons of prior arts that attempted to address these challenges. It is followed by a discussion of the proposed 60GHz channel- bonding receiver, which utilizes only a single PLL and enables both contiguous and non- contiguous channel-bonding schemes.
Finally, Chapter 6 presents the conclusion of this thesis
Kinetics and Mechanism of In Situ Metallization of Bulk DNA Films.
DNA-templated metallization is broadly investigated in the fabrication of metallic structures by virtue of the unique DNA-metal ion interaction. However, current DNA-templated synthesis is primarily carried out based on pure DNA in an aqueous solution. In this study, we present in situ synthesis of metallic structures in a natural DNA complex bulk film by UV light irradiation, where the growth of silver particles is resolved by in situ time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering and dielectric spectroscopy. Our studies provide physical insights into the kinetics and mechanisms of natural DNA metallization, in correlation with the multi-stage switching operations in the bulk phase, paving the way towards the development of versatile biomaterial composites with tunable physical properties for optical storage, plasmonics, and catalytic applications
Women with endometriosis have higher comorbidities: Analysis of domestic data in Taiwan
AbstractEndometriosis, defined by the presence of viable extrauterine endometrial glands and stroma, can grow or bleed cyclically, and possesses characteristics including a destructive, invasive, and metastatic nature. Since endometriosis may result in pelvic inflammation, adhesion, chronic pain, and infertility, and can progress to biologically malignant tumors, it is a long-term major health issue in women of reproductive age. In this review, we analyze the Taiwan domestic research addressing associations between endometriosis and other diseases. Concerning malignant tumors, we identified four studies on the links between endometriosis and ovarian cancer, one on breast cancer, two on endometrial cancer, one on colorectal cancer, and one on other malignancies, as well as one on associations between endometriosis and irritable bowel syndrome, one on links with migraine headache, three on links with pelvic inflammatory diseases, four on links with infertility, four on links with obesity, four on links with chronic liver disease, four on links with rheumatoid arthritis, four on links with chronic renal disease, five on links with diabetes mellitus, and five on links with cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, etc.). The data available to date support that women with endometriosis might be at risk of some chronic illnesses and certain malignancies, although we consider the evidence for some comorbidities to be of low quality, for example, the association between colon cancer and adenomyosis/endometriosis. We still believe that the risk of comorbidity might be higher in women with endometriosis than that we supposed before. More research is needed to determine whether women with endometriosis are really at risk of these comorbidities
Effect of P to A Mutation of the N-Terminal Residue Adjacent to the Rgd Motif on Rhodostomin: Importance of Dynamics in Integrin Recognition
Rhodostomin (Rho) is an RGD protein that specifically inhibits integrins. We found that Rho mutants with the P48A mutation 4.4â11.5 times more actively inhibited integrin α5ÎČ1. Structural analysis showed that they have a similar 3D conformation for the RGD loop. Docking analysis also showed no difference between their interactions with integrin α5ÎČ1. However, the backbone dynamics of RGD residues were different. The values of the R2 relaxation parameter for Rho residues R49 and D51 were 39% and 54% higher than those of the P48A mutant, which caused differences in S2, Rex, and Ïe. The S2 values of the P48A mutant residues R49, G50, and D51 were 29%, 14%, and 28% lower than those of Rho. The Rex values of Rho residues R49 and D51 were 0.91 sâ1 and 1.42 sâ1; however, no Rex was found for those of the P48A mutant. The Ïe values of Rho residues R49 and D51 were 9.5 and 5.1 times lower than those of P48A mutant. Mutational study showed that integrin α5ÎČ1 prefers its ligands to contain (G/A)RGD but not PRGD sequences for binding. These results demonstrate that the N-terminal proline residue adjacent to the RGD motif affect its function and dynamics, which suggests that the dynamic properties of the RGD motif may be important in Rho's interaction with integrin α5ÎČ1
Homogenized Poly(3-hexylthiophene)/Methanofullerene Film by Addition of End-Functionalized Compatibilizer and Its Application to Polymer Solar Cells
A uniformed poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) blended film prepared by using spin-coating process is achieved by addition of 10% hydroxyl group end-functionalized P3HT (HOC-P3HT-COH) as a compatibilizer. Ratio of P3HT/PCBM on a spin-coated film has been improved from 1â:â1.22 on the edge and 1â:â0.85 in the center of substrate (substrate size, 2âcm Ă 3âcm) to 1â:â1.03 on the edge and 1â:â0.94 in the center for P3HT/HOC-P3HT-COH/PCBM film (1â:â0.1â:â1). Homogeneous and reproducible polymer solar cell with an average of 3.71% power conversion efficiency under AM1.5G irradiation is fabricated with 10% HOC-P3HT-COH in P3HT/PCBM layer
Hypervalent Iodine(III)-Induced Domino Oxidative Cyclization for the Synthesis of Cyclopenta[b]furans
A new strategy for cyclopenta[b]furan synthesis mediated by hypervalent iodine(III) has been described. The approach employs diacetoxyiodobenzene-induced initial dehydrogenation to a putative trienone intermediate and triggered sequential cycloisomerization to form the cyclo-penta[b]furan targets
MicroRNA-29a Manifests Multifaceted Features to Intensify Radiosensitivity, Escalate Apoptosis, and Revoke Cell Migration for Palliating Radioresistance-Enhanced Cervical Cancer Progression
Radioresistance remains a major clinical challenge in cervical cancer therapy and results in tumor relapse and metastasis. Nevertheless, the detailed mechanisms are still largely enigmatic. This study was conducted to elucidate the prospective impacts of microRNA-29a (miR-29a) on the modulation of radioresistance-associated cervical cancer progression. Herein, we established two pairs of parental wild-type (WT) and radioresistant (RR) cervical cancer cells (CaSki and C33A), and we found that constant suppressed miR-29a, but not miR-29b/c, was exhibited in RR-clones that underwent a dose of 6-Gy radiation treatment. Remarkably, radioresistant clones displayed low radiosensitivity, and the reduced apoptosis rate resulted in augmented surviving fractions, measured by the clonogenic survival curve assay and the Annexin V/Propidium Iodide apoptosis assay, respectively. Overexpression of miR-29a effectively intensified the radiosensitivity and triggered the cell apoptosis in RR-clones. In contrast, suppressed miR-29a modestly abridged the radiosensitivity and abolished the cell apoptosis in WT-clones. Hence, ectopically introduced miR-29a into RR-clones notably attenuated the wound-healing rate and cell migration, whereas reduced miR-29a aggravated cell mobilities of WT-clones estimated via the in vitro wound-healing assay and time-lapse recording assay. Notably, we further established the in vivo short-term lung locomotion metastasis model in BALB/c nude mice, and we found that increased lung localization was shown after tail-vein injection of RR-CaSki cells compared to those of WT-CaSki cells. Amplified miR-29a significantly eliminated the radioresistance-enhanced lung locomotion. Our data provide evidence suggesting that miR-29a is a promising microRNA signature in radioresistance of cervical cancer cells and displays multifaceted innovative roles involved in anti-radioresistance, escalated apoptosis, and anti-cell migration/metastasis. Amalgamation of a nucleoid-based strategy (miR-29a) together with conventional radiotherapy may be an innovative and eminent strategy to intensify the radiosensitivity and further protect against the subsequent radioresistance and the potential metastasis in cervical cancer treatment
Isolated systolic hypertension and central blood pressure: Implications from the national nutrition and health survey in Taiwan
Abstract We aimed to investigate the association between isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) and central blood pressure (BP) in a nationally representative population, with a focus on the young and middleâaged adults (<50 years old). A total of 2029 adults without taking antihypertensive medications, aged â„ 19 years old, participated in the 2013â2016 National Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan. Central and brachial BP were simultaneously measured using a cuffâbased standâalone central blood pressure monitor purporting to measure invasive central BP (type II device). Central hypertension was defined by central systolic (SBP)/diastolic BP (DBP) â„130 or 90 mm Hg, and ISH was defined by brachial SBP â„ 140 and DBP < 90 mm Hg. Overall, the prevalence rates of ISH, isolated diastolic hypertension (IDH, brachial SBP < 140 and DBP â„ 90 mmHg), and systolic/diastolic hypertension (SDH, brachial SBP â„ 140 and DBP â„ 90 mmHg) were 6.51%, 1.92%, and 4.34%, respectively. ISH subjects had significantly higher central pulse pressure (PP) (62.8 ± 9.7 mm Hg for age < 50 years and 72.4 ± 13.5 mmHg for age â„ 50 years) than those subjects with either IDH (44.7 ± 10.7 and 44.9 ± 10.6 mmHg) or SDH (55.2 ± 14.0 and 62.6 ± 17.1 mmHg). All ISH adults had central hypertension, and a higher prevalence of central obesity than the normotensives (80.95% vs. 26.15%, for age < 50 years; and 63.96% vs. 43.37% for age â„ 50 years). All untreated subjects with ISH, whether younger or older, had central hypertension and had significantly higher central PP than those with IDH or SDH. Central obesity was one of the major characteristics of ISH, especially in the youngâ and middleâaged adults
