The Relationship of Corporate Financial Performance and Innovation among Manufacturing Industries
Innovation is becoming a critical determinant of the survival and advancement of firms. Despite this realization, there is a dearth of literature that tackles the subject matter and its specific role in corporate settings remains vague. Using corporate data on East and Southeast Asian manufacturing firms from 2008 to 2013, this study aims to identify the impact of corporate financial performance on research and development (R&D) expenditure as a measure of innovation. On the whole, the researchers utilized random effects (REM) and fixed effects (FEM) models to establish the relationship between R&D and corporate performance. The researchers, then, identified the factors that affected R&D. The researchers found that sales, profitability, and cash flow have positive relationships with R&D. Moreover, when firm size is considered, the researchers discovered that R&D determinants for large manufacturing firms were different - total profitability and liabilities and debt - from those of SMEs - number of employees and sales for SMEs
A rare cause of pediatric urinary incontinence: Ventriculoperitoneal shunt with bladder perforation
We present a case of 2-year-old boy with long term dysuria and intermittent incontinence, and new onset of fever and headache. Significant past medical history includes congenital hydrocephalus with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement two years prior to consult. On physical examination, a tubular structure was noted underneath the prepuce suspected to be the distal tip of ventriculoperitoneal shunt, which was confirmed by kidney, ureter and bladder (KUB) X-ray and CT scan. Patient was treated with a novel approach of extraperitoneal removal of ventriculoperitoneal shunt distal tip with cystorrhaphy via a low transverse pfannenstiel incision, separate left ventriculostomy tube insertion and complete removal of ventriculoperitoneal shunt from the right ventricle. This report accounts a rare pediatric case with ventriculoperitoneal shunt perforation into a normal bladder successfully treated with mini-open surgery
Spiral attractor created by vector solitons
Mode-locked lasers emitting a train of femtosecond pulses called dissipative solitons are an enabling technology for metrology, high-resolution spectroscopy, fibre optic communications, nano-optics and many other fields of science and applications. Recently, the vector nature of dissipative solitons has been exploited to demonstrate mode locked lasing with both locked and rapidly evolving states of polarisation. Here, for an erbium-doped fibre laser mode locked with carbon nanotubes, we demonstrate the first experimental and theoretical evidence of a new class of slowly evolving vector solitons characterized by a double-scroll chaotic polarisation attractor substantially different from Lorenz, Rössler and Ikeda strange attractors. The underlying physics comprises a long time scale coherent coupling of two polarisation modes. The observed phenomena, apart from the fundamental interest, provide a base for advances in secure communications, trapping and manipulation of atoms and nanoparticles, control of magnetisation in data storage devices and many other areas
Enhanced prefrontal serotonin 5-HT1A currents in a mouse model of Williams-Beuren syndrome with low innate anxiety
Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by the hemizygous deletion of 28 genes on chromosome 7, including the general transcription factor GTF2IRD1. Mice either hemizygously (Gtf2ird1+/−) or homozygously (Gtf2ird1−/−) deleted for this transcription factor exhibit low innate anxiety, low aggression and increased social interaction, a phenotype that shares similarities to the high sociability and disinhibition seen in individuals with WBS. Here, we investigated the inhibitory effects of serotonin (5-HT) on the major output neurons of the prefrontal cortex in Gtf2ird1−/− mice and their wildtype (WT) siblings. Prefrontal 5-HT receptors are known to modulate anxiety-like behaviors, and the Gtf2ird1−/− mice have altered 5-HT metabolism in prefrontal cortex. Using whole cell recording from layer V neurons in acute brain slices of prefrontal cortex, we found that 5-HT elicited significantly larger inhibitory, outward currents in Gtf2ird1−/− mice than in WT controls. In both genotypes, these currents were resistant to action potential blockade with TTX and were suppressed by the selective 5-HT1A receptor antagonist WAY-100635, suggesting that they are mediated directly by 5-HT1A receptors on the recorded neurons. Control experiments suggest a degree of layer and receptor specificity in this enhancement since 5-HT1A receptor-mediated responses in layer II/III pyramidal neurons were unchanged as were responses mediated by two other inhibitory receptors in layer V pyramidal neurons. Furthermore, we demonstrate GTF2IRD1 protein expression by neurons in layer V of the prefrontal cortex. Our finding that 5-HT1A-mediated responses are selectively enhanced in layer V pyramidal neurons of Gtf2ird1−/− mice gives insight into the cellular mechanisms that underlie reduced innate anxiety and increased sociability in these mice, and may be relevant to the low social anxiety and disinhibition in patients with WBS and their sensitivity to serotonergic medicines
Analysis of RNA splicing defects in PITX2 mutants supports a gene dosage model of Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome
BACKGROUND: Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome (ARS) is associated with mutations in the PITX2 gene that encodes a homeobox transcription factor. Several intronic PITX2 mutations have been reported in Axenfeld-Rieger patients but their effects on gene expression have not been tested. METHODS: We present two new families with recurrent PITX2 intronic mutations and use PITX2c minigenes and transfected cells to address the hypothesis that intronic mutations effect RNA splicing. Three PITX2 mutations have been analyzed: a G>T mutation within the AG 3' splice site (ss) junction associated with exon 4 (IVS4-1G>T), a G>C mutation at position +5 of the 5' (ss) of exon 4 (IVS4+5G>C), and a previously reported A>G substitution at position -11 of 3'ss of exon 5 (IVS5-11A>G). RESULTS: Mutation IVS4+5G>C showed 71% retention of the intron between exons 4 and 5, and poorly expressed protein. Wild-type protein levels were proportionally expressed from correctly spliced mRNA. The G>T mutation within the exon 4 AG 3'ss junction shifted splicing exclusively to a new AG and resulted in a severely truncated, poorly expressed protein. Finally, the A>G substitution at position -11 of the 3'ss of exon 5 shifted splicing exclusively to a newly created upstream AG and resulted in generation of a protein with a truncated homeodomain. CONCLUSION: This is the first direct evidence to support aberrant RNA splicing as the mechanism underlying the disorder in some patients and suggests that the magnitude of the splicing defect may contribute to the variability of ARS phenotypes, in support of a gene dosage model of Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome
The Efficiency of Refrigeration Capacity Regulation in the Ambient Air Conditioning Systems
The Efficiency of Refrigeration Capacity Regulation in the Ambient Air Conditioning Systems / E. Trushliakov, A. Radchenko, M. Radchenko, S. Kantor, O. Zielikov // Proceedings of the 3rd Intern. Conf. on Design, Simulation, Manufacturing: The Innovation Exchange «Advances in Design, Simulation and Manufacturing III». – Kharkiv, 2020. – Vol. 244. – P. 343–353.Abstract. The operation of the ambient air conditioning systems (ACS) is characterized by considerable fluctuations of the heat load in response to the current climatic conditions. It needs the analyses of the efficiency of the application of compressors with frequency converters for refrigeration capacity regulation in actual climatic conditions. A new method and approach to analyzing the effectiveness of ACS cooling capacity adjusting by using the compressor with changing the rotational speed of the motor as an example have been developed, according to which the overall range of changeable heat loads is divided into two zones: the zone of ambient air processing with considerable fluctuations of the current heat load, that requires effective refrigeration capacity regulation by the compressor with frequency converters (from 100% rated refrigeration capacity down to about 50%) and not an adjustable zone of reduced refrigeration capacity below 50% rated refrigeration capacity of the compressor. The magnitudes of threshold refrigeration capacity between both zones are chosen according to the rational value of installed (design) refrigeration capacity on the ACS, required for cooling the ambient air to a target temperature that ensures the maximum annual refrigeration capacity production in actual current climatic conditions. The proposed method and approach to the analysis of the efficiency of the refrigeration capacity regulation of the ACS compressor by distributing the overall range of changes in current heat loads allows increasing the efficiency of utilizing the installed refrigeration capacity in prevailing climatic conditions

An Innovative Air Conditioning System for Changeable Heat Loads
An Innovative Air Conditioning System for Changeable Heat Loads / E. Trushliakov, M. Radchenko, T. Bohdal, R. Radchenko, S. Kantor // Lecture notes in mechanical engineering. – 2020. – P. 616–625.Abstract. The efficiency of air conditioning (AC) systems depends on the operation of their air coolers at varying heat loads in response to current changeable climatic conditions. In general case, an overall heat load of any AC system comprises the unstable range, corresponding to ambient air processing with heat load fluctuations, and a comparatively stable part for subsequent air subcooling. Following from this approach, a rational design overall heat load is chosen to provide a maximum annular refrigeration capacity generation and divided into a comparatively stable basic part and a remaining part for ambient air precooling at changeable heat loads. The ambient air precooling mode with considerable heat load fluctuation needs load modulation, whereas the comparatively stable heat load range can be covered by operation at about nominal mode. According to modern trend in AC systems the load modulation is performed by varying refrigerant feed to air coolers in Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) system. But with this the problem of inefficient operation of air coolers caused by dry-out of inner walls at the final stage of inside tube refrigerant evaporation followed by dropping the intensity of heat transfer remains unsolved. As alternative approach of the heat load modulation in AC systems there is a concept of incomplete refrigerant evaporation with overfilling air coils that leads to excluding a dry-out of inner surface of air coils and is realized through liquid refrigerant recirculation by injector (jet pump)
Lipid Motif of a Bacterial Antigen Mediates Immune Responses via TLR2 Signaling
The cross-talk between the innate and the adaptive immune system is facilitated
by the initial interaction of antigen with dendritic cells. As DCs express a
large array of TLRs, evidence has accumulated that engagement of these molecules
contributes to the activation of adaptive immunity. We have evaluated the
immunostimulatory role of the highly-conserved outer membrane lipoprotein P6
from non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHI) to determine
whether the presence of the lipid motif plays a critical role on its
immunogenicity. We undertook a systematic analysis of the role that the lipid
motif plays in the activation of DCs and the subsequent stimulation of
antigen-specific T and B cells. To facilitate our studies, recombinant P6
protein that lacked the lipid motif was generated. Mice immunized with
non-lipidated rP6 were unable to elicit high titers of anti-P6 Ig. Expression of
the lipid motif on P6 was also required for proliferation and cytokine secretion
by antigen-specific T cells. Upregulation of T cell costimulatory molecules was
abrogated in DCs exposed to non-lipidated rP6 and in
TLR2−/− DCs exposed to native P6, thereby resulting
in diminished adaptive immune responses. Absence of either the lipid motif on
the antigen or TLR2 expression resulted in diminished cytokine production from
stimulated DCs. Collectively; our data suggest that the lipid motif of the
lipoprotein antigen is essential for triggering TLR2 signaling and effective
stimulation of APCs. Our studies establish the pivotal role of a bacterial lipid
motif on activating both innate and adaptive immune responses to an otherwise
poorly immunogenic protein antigen
