    A New Model for Family Resource Allocation Among Siblings: Competition, Forbearance, and Support

    Previous research analyzing within-family education resource allocation usually employs the sibship and birth order of a child as explanatory variables. We argue in this paper that to correctly characterize the resource competition and support scenario within a family, one should identify the Sex, Seniority, and most importantly Age Difference of a child’s sibling structure, and hence we call our analysis a SSAD model of family resource allocation. We show that siblings with different combinations of SSAD may play distinct roles in family resource allocation. Ignoring such facts may distort the significance and/or direction of the prediction. We support our analysis with empirical evidence using data from Taiwan.

    The pole-sensitivity approach is employed to investigate the stability issue of the discrete-time control system, where a digital controller, implemented with finite word length (FWL), is used. A new stability related measure is derived, which is more accurate in estimating the closed-loop stability robustness of an FWL implemented controller than some existing measures for the pole-sensitivity analysis. This improved stability measure thus provides a better criterion to find the optimal realizations for a generic controller structure that includes output-feedback and observer-based controllers. A numerical example is used to verify the theoretical analysis and to illustrate the design procedure

    Photoemission Spectroscopy of Magnetic and Non-magnetic Impurities on the Surface of the Bi2_2Se3_3 Topological Insulator

    Dirac-like surface states on surfaces of topological insulators have a chiral spin structure that suppresses back-scattering and protects the coherence of these states in the presence of non-magnetic scatterers. In contrast, magnetic scatterers should open the back- scattering channel via the spin-flip processes and degrade the state's coherence. We present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies of the electronic structure and the scattering rates upon adsorption of various magnetic and non-magnetic impurities on the surface of Bi2_2Se3_3, a model topological insulator. We reveal a remarkable insensitivity of the topological surface state to both non-magnetic and magnetic impurities in the low impurity concentration regime. Scattering channels open up with the emergence of hexagonal warping in the high-doping regime, irrespective of the impurity's magnetic moment.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Local Commutativity and Causality in Interacting PP-wave String Field Theory

    In this paper, we extend our previous study of causality and local commutativity of string fields in the pp-wave lightcone string field theory to include interaction. Contrary to the flat space case result of Lowe, Polchinski, Susskind, Thorlacius and Uglum, we found that the pp-wave interaction does not affect the local commutativity condition. Our results show that the pp-wave lightcone string field theory is not continuously connected with the flat space one. We also discuss the relation between the condition of local commutativity and causality. While the two notions are closely related in a point particle theory, their relation is less clear in string theory.
