On the effects of liquid-gas interfacial shear on slip flow through a parallel-plate channel with superhydrophobic grooved walls

    Get PDF
Comparisons between slip lengths predicted by a liquid-gas coupled model and that by an idealized zero-gas-shear model are presented in this paper. The problem under consideration is pressure-driven flow of a liquid through a plane channel bounded by two superhydrophobic walls which are patterned with longitudinal or transverse gas-filled grooves. Effective slip arises from lubrication on the liquid-gas interface and intrinsic slippage on the solid phase of the wall. In the mathematical models, the velocities are analytically expressed in terms of eigenfunction series expansions, where the unknown coefficients are determined by the matching of velocities and shear stresses on the liquid-gas interface. Results are generated to show the effects due to small but finite gas viscosity on the effective slip lengths as functions of the channel height, the depth of grooves, the gas area fraction of the wall, and intrinsic slippage of the solid phase. Conditions under which even a gas/liquid viscosity ratio as small as 0.01 may have appreciable effects on the slip lengths are discussed. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio

Phase transformation behaviour of porous NiTi alloys fabricated by capsule-free hot isostatic pressing

    Get PDF
Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to characterize the phase transformation behaviour of porous Ni50Ti50 alloys fabricated by capsule-free hot isostatic pressing (CF-HIP) with different cold compaction pressures. Experimental results reveal that a multi-stage martensitic transformation (MST) exists in the sintered porous NiTi alloys on cooling while the reverse transformation upon heating is either a single or two-stage phase transformation. The DSC thermal analysis indicates that the cold compaction pressure has great effect on the subsequent transformation temperatures. Generally, the phase transformation temperatures of porous NiTi alloys with lower cold compaction pressure are higher than those compacted with higher pressure. With increase in the annealing time, the transformation temperatures increase quickly when the cold compaction pressure was 150MPa. On the other hand, the transformation temperatures change only slightly when the cold compaction pressure was varied from 300MPa to 400MPa. These phenomena can be attributed to the combined effect of larger plastic deformation with higher dislocations density produced by cold compaction and the precipitation of the second phase in the porous NiTi alloys.published_or_final_versio

Methods in angle-resolved photoelectron diffraction: Slab method versus separable propagator cluster approach

    Get PDF
We have compared multiple-scattering results of angle-resolved photoelectron diffraction spectra between the exact slab method and the separable propagator perturbation cluster method. In the slab method, the source wave and multiple scattering within strongly scattering layers are expanded in spherical waves while the scattering among different layers is expressed in plane waves. The transformation between spherical waves and plane waves is done exactly. The plane waves are then matched across the solid-vacuum interface to a single outgoing plane wave in the detector's direction. The slab is infinitely extended parallel to the surface. Normal to the surface, enough layers are included to ensure convergence of the calculated intensity. The separable propagator perturbation approach uses two approximations; (i) A separable representation of the Green's-function propagator and (ii) a perturbation expansion of multiple-scattering terms. The cluster size is finite, typically containing 50 atoms or less. Results of this study show that using a cluster of 148 atoms, the largest cluster used to date, the cluster size is still too small for the cluster results on Ni(001) to converge with those of the slab method. Ideas to improve the perturbation expansion cluster method are discussed.published_or_final_versio

Characteristics of nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) in industrial, industrial-urban, and industrial-suburban atmospheres of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of south China

In a study conducted in late summer 2000, a wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured throughout five target cities in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of south China. Twenty-eight nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs; 13 saturated, 9 unsaturated, and 6 aromatic) are discussed. The effect of rapid industrialization was studied for three categories of landuse in the PRD: Industrial, industrial-urban, and industrial-suburban. The highest VOC mixing ratios were observed in industrial areas. Despite its relatively short atmospheric lifetime (2-3 days), toluene, which is largely emitted from industrial solvent use and vehicular emissions, was the most abundant NMHC quantified. Ethane, ethene, ethyne, propane, n-butane, i-pentane, benzene, and m-xylene were the next most abundant VOCs. Direct emissions from industrial activities were found to greatly impact the air quality in nearby neighborhoods. These emissions lead to large concentration variations for many VOCs in the five PRD study cities. Good correlations between isoprene and several short-lived combustion products were found in industrial areas, suggesting that in addition to biogenic sources, anthropogenic emissions may contribute to urban isoprene levels. This study provides a snapshot of industrial, industrial-urban, and industrial-suburban NMHCs in the five most industrially developed cities of the PRD. Increased impact of industrial activities on PRD air quality due to the rapid spread of industry from urban to suburban and rural areas, and the decrease of farmland, is expected to continue until effective emission standards are implemented. Biomimetic deposition of apatite on surface chemically modified porous NiTi shapememory alloy

    Get PDF
Porous NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) with 48% porosity and an average pore size of 50800 μm was synthesized by capsule-free hot isostatic pressing (CF-HIP). To enhance the surface bioactivity, the porous NiTi SMA was subjected to H"2O"2 and subsequent NaOH treatment. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses revealed that a porous sodium titanate (Na"2TiO"3) film had formed on the surface of the porous NiTi SMA. An apatite layer was deposited on this film after immersion in simulated body fluid at 37°C, while no apatite could be found on the surface of the untreated porous NiTi SMA. The formation of the apatite layer infers that the bioactivity of the porous NiTi SMA may be enhanced by surface chemical treatment, which is favorable for its application as bone implants. © 2008 World Scientific Publishing Company.postprin
