Assessment of RFID Read Accuracy for ISS Water Kit

    Get PDF
The Space Life Sciences Directorate/Medical Informatics and Health Care Systems Branch (SD4) is assessing the benefits Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for tracking items flown onboard the International Space Station (ISS). As an initial study, the Avionic Systems Division Electromagnetic Systems Branch (EV4) is collaborating with SD4 to affix RFID tags to a water kit supplied by SD4 and studying the read success rate of the tagged items. The tagged water kit inside a Cargo Transfer Bag (CTB) was inventoried using three different RFID technologies, including the Johnson Space Center Building 14 Wireless Habitat Test Bed RFID portal, an RFID hand-held reader being targeted for use on board the ISS, and an RFID enclosure designed and prototyped by EV4

Renormalized analytic solution for the enstrophy cascade in two-dimensional quantum turbulence

The forward enstrophy cascade in two-dimensional quantum turbulence in a superfluid film connected to a thermal bath is investigated using a Fokker-Planck equation based on Kosterlitz-Thouless renormalization. The steady-state cascade is formed by injecting vortex pairs of large initial separation at a constant rate. They diffuse with a constant flux to smaller scales, finally annihilating when reaching the core size. The energy spectrum varies as k−3k^{-3}, similar to the spectrum known for 2D classical-fluid enstrophy cascades. The dynamics of the cascade can also be studied, and for the case of a sharply peaked initial vortex-pair distribution, it takes about four eddy turnover times for the system to evolve to the decaying k−3k^{-3} cascade, in agreement with recent computer simulations. These insights into the nature of the cascade also allow a better understanding of the phase-ordering process of temperature-quenched 2D superfluids, where the decay of the vorticity is found to proceed via the turbulent cascade. This connection with turbulence may be a fundamental characteristic of phase-ordering in general.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1411.508

Can COVID-19 vaccinations cause chronic urticaria?

Rationale: Adverse reactions to COVID-19 vaccinations have garnered significant attention from both the public and medical community. Delayed onset urticaria has been described as an adverse reaction to COVID-19 vaccination, but this phenotype has not been fully characterized thus specific evaluation and treatment strategies have not been developed. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients presenting for evaluation of urticaria (acute or chronic) to the University of Washington Allergy Clinics between 12/14/2020 and 12/14/2021. Records were reviewed for development of delayed onset, persistent urticaria occurring following receipt of a COVID-19 vaccination or a history of chronic spontaneous urticaria that worsened after COVID-19 vaccination. Demographic and clinical data including age, sex, co-morbid conditions, treatments attempted, and treatment response was obtained. Results: 22 total patients were determined to have urticaria thought to be attributed to Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccinations. Six of the 22 (27%) had pre-existing chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) which worsened notably after vaccination, and 16 (73%) had novel development of delayed urticaria following vaccination. Patients received a range of treatments including H1-antihistamines, H2-antihistamines, leukotriene inhibitors, oral steroids, omalizumab, cyclosporine, and acupuncture. The majority of patients had improvement or resolution while a minority had worsening urticaria despite treatments at the time of evaluation. Conclusions: COVID-19 vaccinations may result in the development of chronic urticaria in select patients and may worsen control of urticaria in some patients with previously diagnosed chronic urticaria. Additional studies are needed to characterize these patients and determine optimal management strategies

Logistics Reduction and Repurposing Technology for Long Duration Space Missions

One of NASA's Advanced Exploration Systems (AES) projects is the Logistics Reduction and Repurposing (LRR) project, which has the goal of reducing logistics resupply items through direct and indirect means. Various technologies under development in the project will reduce the launch mass of consumables and their packaging, enable reuse and repurposing of items and make logistics tracking more efficient. Repurposing also reduces the trash burden onboard spacecraft and indirectly reduces launch mass by replacing some items on the manifest. Examples include reuse of trash as radiation shielding or propellant. This paper provides the status of the LRR technologies in their third year of development under AES. Advanced clothing systems (ACS) are being developed to enable clothing to be worn longer, directly reducing launch mass. ACS has completed a ground exercise clothing study in preparation for an International Space Station (ISS) technology demonstration in 2014. Development of launch packaging containers and other items that can be repurposed on-orbit as part of habitation outfitting has resulted in a logistics-to-living (L2L) concept. L2L has fabricated and evaluated several multi-purpose cargo transfer bags (MCTBs) for potential reuse on orbit. Autonomous logistics management (ALM) is using radio frequency identification (RFID) to track items and thus reduce crew requirements for logistics functions. An RFID dense reader prototype is under construction and plans for integrated testing are being made. Development of a heat melt compactor (HMC) second generation unit for processing trash into compact and stable tiles is nearing completion. The HMC prototype compaction chamber has been completed and system development testing is underway. Research has been conducted on the conversion of trash-to-gas (TtG) for high levels of volume reduction and for use in propulsion systems. A steam reformation system was selected for further system definition of the TtG technology. And benefits analysis of all LRR technologies have been updated with the latest test and analysis results
