Comparison of House Spraying and Insecticide-Treated Nets for Malaria Control.
The efficacies of using residual house spraying and insecticide-treated nets against malaria vectors are compared, using data from six recent comparisons in Africa, Asia and Melanesia. By all the entomological and malariological criteria recorded, pyrethroid-treated nets were at least as efficacious as house spraying with dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), malathion or a pyrethroid. However, when data from carefully monitored house spraying projects carried out between the 1950s and 1970s at Pare-Taveta and Zanzibar (United Republic of Tanzania), Kisumu (Kenya) and Garki (Nigeria) are compared with recent insecticide-treated net trials with apparently similar vector populations, the results with the insecticide-treated nets were much less impressive. Possible explanations include the longer duration of most of the earlier spraying projects and the use of non-irritant insecticides. Non-irritant insecticides may yield higher mosquito mortalities than pyrethroids, which tend to make insects leave the site of treatment (i.e. are excito-repellent). Comparative tests with non-irritant insecticides, including their use on nets, are advocated. The relative costs and sustainability of spraying and of insecticide-treated net operations are briefly reviewed for villages in endemic and epidemic situations and in camps for displaced populations. The importance of high population coverage is emphasized, and the advantages of providing treatment free of charge, rather than charging individuals, are pointed out

Gel nails are a common artificial nail option. Ultraviolet (UV) nail lamps are commonly used to cure gel nails. Ultraviolet A radiation is a known mutagen that penetrates into the nail bed. Although previously reported, the role of UV nail lamps in the carcinogenesis of both keratinocyte carcinoma and melanoma remains controversial. Herein, we report a patient taking the photosensitizing agent hydrochlorothiazide who developed numerous squamous cell carcinomas on the dorsal hands and feet with a 10-year history of UV nail light exposure every 2-3 weeks
Implementation Of A Standardized Electronic Handoff Tool For Advance Practice Provider Pass-Off
Objective: To increase the rate of documentation and satisfaction by APPs using a standardized handoff tool to and from a neurology intensive care unit.
Background: A comprehensive literature review showed that there was minimal literature on handoff tools for advance practice providers (APPs), and presently at the implementation site, there was no formal handoff process for patients transferring from a neurology intensive care unit.
Methods: This project was implemented between December 1, 2019 - January 31, 2020. The first step was to have APPs complete a pre-assessment. Based on the results of the pre-assessment, an electronic handoff tool was created. APPs were educated on the use of an EPIC smartphrase to easily access the handoff tool. At the end of the implementation period, APPs were asked to complete a post-assessment to evaluate their satisfaction with the effectiveness of the electronic handoff tool.
Results: During the implementation period, there was documentation using the electronic handoff tool for 66 of the 105 neurosurgery transfers, accounting for 63% percent of patients with a completed electronic handoff. Results from the post- assessment showed that 89% felt satisfied with the handoff tool because they perceived improvements in care processes.
Conclusion: The implementation of an electronic handoff process resulted improvements in APP satisfaction (with the transfer process and in perceived improvements in patient care. The second moment method, a new way to test a lens
The second moment method is proposed as a method of obtaining a one dimensional approximation to a two dimensional angularly averaged modulation transfer function for low spatial frequencies. For two orthogonal knife-edge scans of a point spread function, the second moments about the centroid of the corresponding line spread functions are determined. The two second moment values are then used to approximate the two dimensional angularly averaged modulation transfer function. Two rotationally asymmetric point spread functions were used to test the approximation, an equilateral triangle and a rectangle. The results show, for both cases, that in the 1.0 to 0.5 modulation range, there was no difference in the modulation transfer function curves determined by using the approximation and the actual angular average of the modulation transfer function. In the 0.5 to 0.1 modulation range, a difference of only 5% was calculated
