    Redefining Trade Secrets in North Carolina

    North Carolina has a trade secrets problem, and it resides at the most elementary part of the doctrine: the definition. In the North Carolina Trade Secrets Protection Act, the general assembly established an elemental, two-prong test for identifying a trade secret. Courts adjudicating trade secrets cases, however, have strayed from this definition, instead applying a six-factor balancing test that common law courts used before enactment of statutory trade secret definitions. This bifurcated development has not only created an inconsistent jurisprudence-it has also cultivated fundamental problems in the North Carolina legal system. Namely, North Carolina courts have infringed on the province of the legislative branch, changed the law governing trade secret claims, and prompted practitioner confusion. This Comment traces the development of trade secret law nationwide and, more specifically, within North Carolina. It identifies where courts went wrong in their trade secret jurisprudence. Through discussion of the problems of the judicially created six-factor test, this Comment advocates for a simple, straightforward solution. That is, the North Carolina Supreme Court should steer lower courts back to the statutory definition

    Money and happiness : rank of income, not income, affects life satisfaction

    Does money buy happiness, or does happiness come indirectly from the higher rank in society that money brings? Here we test a rank hypothesis, according to which people gain utility from the ranked position of their income within a comparison group. The rank hypothesis contrasts with traditional reference income hypotheses, which suggest utility from income depends on comparison to a social group reference norm. We find that the ranked position of an individual’s income predicts general life satisfaction, while absolute income and reference income have no effect. Furthermore, individuals weight upward comparisons more than downward comparisons. According to the rank hypothesis, income and utility are not directly linked: Increasing an individual’s income will only increase their utility if ranked position also increases and will necessarily reduce the utility of others who will lose rank

    The effectiveness of faecal removal methods of pasture management to control the cyathostomin burden of donkeys

    Background: The level of anthelmintic resistance within some cyathostomin parasite populations has increased to the level where sole reliance on anthelmintic-based control protocols is not possible. Management-based nematode control methods, including removal of faeces from pasture, are widely recommended for use in association with a reduction in anthelmintic use to reduce selection pressure for drug resistance; however, very little work has been performed to quantitatively assess the effectiveness of such methods.<p></p> Methods: We analysed data obtained from 345 donkeys at The Donkey Sanctuary (Devon, UK), managed under three different pasture management techniques, to investigate the effectiveness of faeces removal in strongyle control in equids. The management groups were as follows: no removal of faeces from pasture, manual, twice-weekly removal of faeces from pasture and automatic, twice-weekly removal of faeces from pasture (using a mechanical pasture sweeper). From turn-out onto pasture in May, monthly faecal egg counts were obtained for each donkey and the dataset subjected to an auto regressive moving average model.<p></p> Results: There was little to no difference in faecal egg counts between the two methods of faecal removal; both resulted in significantly improved cyathostomin control compared to the results obtained from the donkeys that grazed pasture from which there was no faecal removal.<p></p> Conclusions: This study represents a valuable and unique assessment of the effectiveness of the removal of equine faeces from pasture, and provides an evidence base from which to advocate twice-weekly removal of faeces from pasture as an adjunct for equid nematode control. Widespread adoption of this practice could substantially reduce anthelmintic usage, and hence reduce selection pressure for nematode resistance to the currently effective anthelmintic products.<p></p&gt

    Magnetic microscopy of topologically protected homochiral domain walls in an ultrathin perpendicularly magnetized Co film

    Next-generation concepts for solid-state memory devices are based on current-driven domain wall propagation, where the wall velocity governs the device performance. It has been shown that the domain wall velocity and the direction of travel is controlled by the nature of the wall and its chirality. This chirality is attributed to effects emerging from the lack of inversion symmetry at the interface between a ferromagnet and a heavy metal, leading to an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction that can control the shape and chirality of the magnetic domain wall. Here we present direct imaging of domain walls in Pt/Co/AlOx_x films using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, demonstrating the presence of homochiral, and thus topologically protected, N\'{e}el walls. Such domain walls are good candidates for dense data storage, bringing the bit size down close to the limit of the domain wall width
