Development of geothermal energy and basin-scale simulations of fluid and heat flow both suffer from uncertain physical rock properties at depth. Therefore, building better prognostic models are required. We analysed hydraulic and thermal properties of the major rock types in the Molasse Basin in Southern Germany. On about 400 samples thermal conductivity, density, porosity, and sonic velocity were measured. Here, we propose a three-step procedure with increasing complexity for analysis of the data set: First, univariate descriptive statistics provides a general understanding of the data structure, possibly still with large uncertainty. Examples show that the remaining uncertainty can be as high as 0.8 W/(m K) or as low as 0.1 W/(m K). This depends on the possibility to subdivide the geologic units into data sets that are also petrophysically similar. Then, based on all measurements, cross-plot and quick-look methods are used to gain more insight into petrophysical relationships and to refine the analysis. Because these measures usually imply an exactly determined system they do not provide strict error bounds. The final, most complex step comprises a full inversion of select subsets of the data comprising both laboratory and borehole measurements. The example presented shows the possibility to refine the used mixing laws for Petrophysical properties and the estimation of mineral properties. These can be estimated to an accuracy of 0.3 W/(m K). The predictive errors for the measurements are 0.07 W/(m K), 70 m/s, and 8 kg/m^3 for thermal conductivity, sonic velocity, and bulk density, respectively.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, International Journal of Earth Science

    Hidden-variable theorems for real experiments

    Get PDF
It has recently been questioned whether the Kochen-Specker theorem is relevant to real experiments, which by necessity only have finite precision. We give an affirmative answer to this question by showing how to derive hidden-variable theorems that apply to real experiments, so that non-contextual hidden variables can indeed be experimentally disproved. The essential point is that for the derivation of hidden-variable theorems one does not have to know which observables are really measured by the apparatus. Predictions can be derived for observables that are defined in an entirely operational way.Comment: 4 page

Quantum Storage of Photonic Entanglement in a Crystal

Entanglement is the fundamental characteristic of quantum physics. Large experimental efforts are devoted to harness entanglement between various physical systems. In particular, entanglement between light and material systems is interesting due to their prospective roles as "flying" and stationary qubits in future quantum information technologies, such as quantum repeaters and quantum networks. Here we report the first demonstration of entanglement between a photon at telecommunication wavelength and a single collective atomic excitation stored in a crystal. One photon from an energy-time entangled pair is mapped onto a crystal and then released into a well-defined spatial mode after a predetermined storage time. The other photon is at telecommunication wavelength and is sent directly through a 50 m fiber link to an analyzer. Successful transfer of entanglement to the crystal and back is proven by a violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality by almost three standard deviations (S=2.64+/-0.23). These results represent an important step towards quantum communication technologies based on solid-state devices. In particular, our resources pave the way for building efficient multiplexed quantum repeaters for long-distance quantum networks.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures + supplementary information; fixed typo in ref. Thermal Conductivity from Core and Well log Data

The relationships between thermal conductivity and other petrophysical properties have been analysed for a borehole drilled in a Tertiary Flysch sequence. We establish equations that permit us to predict rock thermal conductivity from logging data. A regression analysis of thermal conductivity, bulk density, and sonic velocity yields thermal conductivity with an average accuracy of better than 0.2 W/(m K). As a second step, logging data is used to compute a lithological depth profile, which in turn is used to calculate a thermal conductivity profile. From a comparison of the conductivity-depth profile and the laboratory data it can be concluded that thermal conductivity can be computed with an accuracy of less than 0.3 W/(m K)from conventional wireline data. The comparison of two different models shows that this approach can be practical even if old and incomplete logging data is used. The results can be used to infer thermal conductivity for boreholes without appropriate core data that are drilled in a similar geological setting.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure, 3 table

Potential application of mesh-free SPH method in turbulent river flows

A comprehensive review has been completed on the simulation of turbulent flow over rough beds using mesh-free particle models. Based on the outcomes of this review, an improved Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method has been developed for open channel flows over a rough bed, in which a mixing length model is used for modeling the 2D turbulence and a drag force equation is proposed for treating the boundary shear. The proposed model was applied to simulate a depth-limited open channel flow over a rough bed surface. The results of the velocity profile and shear stress distribution show a good agreement with the experimental data and existing analytical solutions. This work reveals that in order to correctly model turbulent open channel flow over a rough bed, the treatment of both flow turbulence and bed roughness effect is equally important
