Communicating Environmental CSR towards Consumers
While engaging in corporate social responsibility (CSR) has gradually become mainstream in the business context, the investigation of CSR communication and its effectiveness remains limited. This study examines how environmental CSR communication affects consumer perception and behavior through an experiment design. We distinguish three CSR communication factorsāmessage content (climate responsibility vs. sustainable use of natural resources), message style (greenhushing vs. uniform vs. greenwashing) and praise tactics (consumer praise vs. company praise)āand assess their impacts on consumer trust, purchase intention and consumer advocacy, respectively. We also investigate the moderating role of attributed intrinsic and extrinsic corporate motives on engaging in environmental CSR. An online experiment (N = 304) revealed that a uniform message style outperforms the other two styles, whereas greenwashing is found to be least effective. In addition, attributed intrinsic corporate motives moderate the impacts of environmental CSR communication on consumer trust, purchase intention and consumer advocacy, respectively. No moderation effect was found for attributed extrinsic corporate motives. The findings provide important implications for effective environmental CSR communication with respect to specific message styles and attributed corporate motives
Spatially Modulated Silicon Interface Energetics Via Hydrogen Plasma Assisted Atomic Layer Deposition of Ultrathin Alumina
Atomic layer deposition ALD is a key technique for the continued scaling of semiconductor devices, which increasingly relies on scalable processes for interface manipulation of structured surfaces on the atomic level. While ALD allows the synthesis of conformal films with utmost control over the thickness, atomically defined closed coatings and surface modifications are challenging to achieve because of 3D growth during nucleation. Here, a route is presented toward the sub nanometer thin and continuous aluminum oxide AlOx coatings on silicon substrates for the spatial control of the surface charge density and interface energetics. Trimethylaluminum in combination with remote hydrogen plasma is used instead of a gas phase oxidant for the transformation of silicon dioxide SiO2 into alumina. Depending on the number of ALD cycles, the SiO2 can be partially or fully transformed, which is exploited to deposit ultrathin AlOx layers in selected regions defined by lithographic patterning. The resulting patterned surfaces are characterized by lateral AlOx SiO2 interfaces possessing 0.3 nm step heights and surface potential steps exceeding 0.4 V. In addition, the introduction of fixed negative charges of 9 1012 cm amp; 8722;2 enables modulation of the surface band bending, which is relevant to the field effect passivation of silicon and low impedance charge transfer across contact interface
Lowlands sociotechnical design theory and lean production
Lean Production (LP) can be regarded as a design approach in search of a theoretical foundation. In this paper we show that Lowlandsā Sociotechnical Design Theory (STSL) could function as such a foundation. To reach this goal, we first describe STSL as a system theoretical reformulation of Original Sociotechnical Theory (OSTS). Then, we introduce the Toyota Production System as the origin of LP and the challenge it poses for the academic field of organization design. This academic field should (1) assess LPās success, (2) generalize it by embedding it in more abstract concepts and theories in order to be able to (3) re-specify it for different manufacturing and non-manufacturing contexts. Next, we give an exposition of STSL as a structural design approach based on developments in system theory. At last, we reformulate lean production in STSL terms and so show that LP is a subcase within the more general theory of STSL. We discuss the merits of both approaches and clarify some misunderstandings of lean both outside and inside the lean community. Embedding LP in the more general language of STSL should enable us to discover similarities and differences, to start a process of mutual learning, to integrate diverse design approaches in a theory of organizational design and to add content to redesign proposals of for example the health care system as proposed by Porter and Teisberg (2006) and Christensen et al. (2009). We quote extensively from the lean literature (to convince our sociotechnical friends) and embed both STSL and LP in the broader literature on organization design. We hope this adds a new perspective to the one given in the Operations Management literature on LP. Again, mutual learning is the goal
Macroeconomic and environmental consequences of circular economy measures in a small open economy
This paper investigates the economy-wide impact of the uptake of circular economy (CE) measures for the small open economy (SOE) of Belgium, in particular the impact of fiscal policies in support of lifetime extension through repair activities of household appliances. The impact assessment is completed by means of a computable general equilibrium model as this allows quantification of both the direct and indirect economic and environmental impact of simulated shocks. The results show that different fiscal policy types can steer an economy into a more circular direction. However, depending on the policy type, the impact on the SOEās macroeconomic structure and level of circularity differs. Furthermore, common claims attributed to a CE (e.g. local job creation or decreased import dependence) can be, but are not always, valid. Hence, policy-makers must prioritize their most important macroeconomic goals and opt for an according fiscal policy. Finally, this paper finds that the CO2 equivalent emissions calculated from a production (or territorial) perspective increase, while they decrease from a consumption perspective. This is explained by the substitution of international activities by local circular activities. This comparative analysis advocates for the consumption approach to assess the CEās impact on CO2 equivalent emissions
