At the university of Vienna there was realized in 2005 a project regarding âTV Super Nannysâ. The project contained a content analysis of the Super Nanny formats in Great Britain, Germany and Austria.
Within the context of the thesis âThe Super Nanny between Globalization and Glocalizationâ my aim was to find out to which extent the format of the Super Nanny can be seen as a globalized or a glocalized TV format. The thesis also wanted do investigate how much the culture of education of the different countries is respected in the program and where there can be observed specific local cultural factors. In the empiric part of the thesis the first episodes of the British, the Spanish and the Brazilian Super Nanny were analyzed. The British format is the original form of the Super Nanny. The Spanish version only is a copy without having applied a license. The Brazilian producers of Super Nanny applied a license for the distribution of this format.
All the episodes of the Super Nanny show families with problems regarding the education of their children. They ask for the help of Super Nanny. The stations decide whether the family is adequate for the show or not. In a first conversation with the station the producers find out the first data about the family and they film the situation of the family. Due to this filming the Super Nanny can prepare the intervention in this family. After the preparation she moves into the house of the family and tries to solve the problems with discussions, coaching and reflections. The dramaturgy always contains two parts: the problem of the family and the demonstration of the solution.
The analyze of the episodes of Super Nanny showed that the reality of the education in this countries matches with the problems shown in the program. The format of the Super Nanny is embedded between global elements like the dramaturgy or the appearance of the Super Nanny and glocal elements like the parenting styles or the education techniques. As Spain and Brazil are horizontal collectivistic cultures the children especially experience love, acceptance and involvement. The Super Nanny tries to teach the parents to give explanations for situations. All these factures guarantee the success of the child in life. This also reflects the parenting style and the techniques of the Super Nannys. Parents and children have to dialogue with each other. The actions which the parents want the children to take have to be explained and argued. Especially in the Brazilian families violence can be observed. Physical punishment is seen as something normal. In the reality as well as in the episodes of the Super Nanny children wish to experience more love and affection from their parents. The indulgent parenting style seems to guarantee the best and most successful development of the children. The Super Nanny also considered these points in the coaching of the family and corrected them into a positive way

Methodological challenges of Twitter analysis concern amongst others data quantity, subjectivity of tweet selection, data reduction and the issue of embedding data with regard to excluded communication contexts. We suggest a procedure of Twitter aggregate analysis (TAA) which reduces procedure arbitrariness, focuses on communicative embedding and connects with the agenda setting-approach when analyzing political online and offline communications. The newly developed TAA-method combines automated selection with manual reduction and conventional content analysis and on this basis thus generates aggregates of tweets: so-called Twitter-universes. By varying the selectors and the standardized transformations of Twitter universes, TAA offers multiple comparisons with regard to topic priorities of politicians, journalists and non-professionals which can be interpreted in the sense of mutual influence. The performance of TAA and its interpretational relevance are illustrated using the example of the local election in Salzburg, Austria in 2013. Particular emphasis will be on the embedding of tweets in in conversations as well as the tweetsâ role without conversational resonance. Also, topics and the treatment of topics in tweets with or without politicians' participation are determined which point to deficits in quality within political online communication
An index-based framework for assessing patterns and trends in river fragmentation and flow regulation by global dams at multiple scales
The global number of dam constructions has increased dramatically over the
past six decades and is forecast to continue to rise, particularly in less
industrialized regions. Identifying development pathways that can deliver the
benefits of new infrastructure while also maintaining healthy and productive
river systems is a great challenge that requires understanding the
multifaceted impacts of dams at a range of scales. New approaches and advanced
methodologies are needed to improve predictions of how future dam construction
will affect biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and fluvial geomorphology
worldwide, helping to frame a global strategy to achieve sustainable dam
development. Here, we respond to this need by applying a graph-based river
routing model to simultaneously assess flow regulation and fragmentation by
dams at multiple scales using data at high spatial resolution. We calculated
the cumulative impact of a set of 6374 large existing dams and 3377 planned or
proposed dams on river connectivity and river flow at basin and subbasin
scales by fusing two novel indicators to create a holistic dam impact matrix
for the period 1930â2030. Static network descriptors such as basin area or
channel length are of limited use in hierarchically nested and dynamic river
systems, so we developed the river fragmentation index and the river
regulation index, which are based on river volume. These indicators are less
sensitive to the effects of network configuration, offering increased
comparability among studies with disparate hydrographies as well as across
scales. Our results indicate that, on a global basis, 48% of river volume is
moderately to severely impacted by either flow regulation, fragmentation, or
both. Assuming completion of all dams planned and under construction in our
future scenario, this number would nearly double to 93%, largely due to major
dam construction in the Amazon Basin. We provide evidence for the importance
of considering small to medium sized dams and for the need to include
waterfalls to establish a baseline of natural fragmentation. Our versatile
framework can serve as a component of river fragmentation and connectivity
assessments; as a standardized, easily replicable monitoring framework at
global and basin scales; and as part of regional dam planning and management
strategies
