nglish language teaching (ELT) is overcoming its monolingual character with students increasingly bringing additional languages to the classroom. Closely related to this, there is a growing awareness of the fact that students’ experiences with multilingualism are a valuable resource which should also be harnessed in language classrooms. Even if English is the language of instruction, the learners’ home languages, other languages and language varieties spoken in the school and personal environments, all influence their learning process and the formation of cultural identities. This paper looks critically at the traditional concept of the monolingual language classroom and explores the potential of multilingual literature which supports the learners’ second language development while, at the same time, raising their awareness of multilingualism and developing their plurilingual literacies. The English-Spanish children’s book Friends from the Other Side/Amigos del Otro Lado (1995) by American writer and Chicana cultural theorist Gloria Anzaldúa serves as an example of how working with multilingual literature can enrich the English learning experience of children from different age groups.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    Authorization Framework for the Internet-of-Things

    Get PDF
This paper describes a framework that allows fine-grained and flexible access control to connected devices with very limited processing power and memory. We propose a set of security and performance requirements for this setting and derive an authorization framework distributing processing costs between constrained devices and less constrained back-end servers while keeping message exchanges with the constrained devices at a minimum. As a proof of concept we present performance results from a prototype implementing the device part of the framework

Geoadditive Latent Variable Modelling of Count Data on Multiple Sexual Partnering in Nigeria

    Get PDF
The 2005 National HIV/AIDS and Reproductive Health Survey in Nigeria provides evidence that multiple sexual partnering increases the risk of contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Therefore, partner reduction is one of the prevention strategies to accomplish the Millenium development goal of halting and reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS. In order to explore possible association between sexual partnering and some risk factors, this paper utilizes a novel Bayesian geoadditive latent variable model for count outcomes. This allows us to simultaneously analyze linear and nonlinear effects of covariates as well as spatial variations of one or more latent variables, such as attitude towards multiple partnering, which in turn directly influences the multivariate observable outcomes or indicators. Influence of demographic factors such as age, gender, locality, state of residence, educational attainment, etc., and knowledge about HIV/AIDS on attitude towards multiple partnering is also investigated. Results can provide insights to policy makers with the aim of reducing the spread of HIV and AIDS among the Nigerian populace through partner reduction

Long-term analysis of numerical integrators for oscillatory Hamiltonian systems under minimal non-resonance conditions

For trigonometric and modified trigonometric integrators applied to oscillatory Hamiltonian differential equations with one or several constant high frequencies, near-conservation of the total and oscillatory energies are shown over time scales that cover arbitrary negative powers of the step size. This requires non-resonance conditions between the step size and the frequencies, but in contrast to previous results the results do not require any non-resonance conditions among the frequencies. The proof uses modulated Fourier expansions with appropriately modified frequencies.Comment: 26 page

“There is no such thing as ‘away’”: an inquiry-based approach to developing learners’ sustainability literacy in the EFL classroom

The explosion of electric and electronic waste (e-waste) is one of the major environmental challenges of our time. Only a small amount of e-waste is properly disposed of or recycled, with most e-waste ending up in landfills or incinerators, or being exported to developing countries where it represents an even greater hazard to both the environment and human health and life. This article tackles this issue in the context of English as a foreign language teaching, arguing that exploring the global streams of e-waste and its environmental impacts at a time when there is an unprecedented demand for electric and electronic devices in all areas of life, including education, can help develop learners’ sustainability literacy. The first part of the paper looks at the concept of e-waste, its economic implications, and the social impacts arising from e-waste (disposal). The ensuing part then looks at e-waste in the context of global sustainability initiatives which, for example, aim at encouraging individuals to become more committed to sustainable lifestyles and thus help to mitigate climate change. The following sections are of a more practical nature, exploring the potential of the topic for the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom, arguing that English as a foreign language no longer solely focuses on developing learners’ language skills but also a plethora of other competences that allow learners to participate in global (environmental) discourses. The practical classroom example takes an inquiry-based approach, which not only allows learners to pursue their own interests but also develops their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. In this example, Nigeria serves to illustrate the devastating effects of (illegal) e-waste (disposal) and the complex socio-economic aspects of e-waste (mis-)management.
