Measurement of CP Violation at the without Time Ordering or
I derive the expressions for the CP-violating asymmetry arising from
interference between mixed and direct decays in the Upsilon(4S) system, for the
case in which only one of the B decay times is observed, integrating over the
decay time of the other B. I observe that neither the difference of the decay
times Delta t, nor even their time-ordering, need be detected. A technique for
measurement of the CP-violating weak decay parameter sin(2beta) is described
which exploits this observation.Comment: 9 pages postscript, also available through

A demographic decomposition of elderly living arrangements with a Mexican example
Population trends in developing countries raise concern about support for the elderly. The proportion of elderly living with extended kin is an indicator of support. This paper considers the analytic utility of a demographic decomposition of living arrangements of elderly Mexicans into population components which include weights for age and marital composition and corresponding rates or propensities. Separate decompositions for elderly males and females demonstrate the importance of population composition to the makeup of the elderly population who are living with extended kin. The utility of the decomposition for comparative analysis is demonstrated by decomposing gender differences in living arrangements. The higher proportion of women living with extended kin is primarily the result of gender differences in age-specific marital status and only secondarily the results of actual differences in propensities toward this type of living arrangement. The utility and limitations of this analytic tool for comparative research are discussed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/42990/1/10823_2004_Article_BF00116824.pd
Probing scalar particle and unparticle couplings in e+ e- -> t tbar with transversely polarized beams
In searching for indications of new physics scalar particle and unparticle
couplings in e^+ e^- \to t\bar t, we consider the role of transversely
polarized initial beams at e^+ e^- colliders. By using a general relativistic
spin density matrix formalism for describing the particles spin states, we find
analytical expressions for the squared amplitude of the process with t or \bar
t polarization measured, including the anomalous coupling contributions. Thanks
to the transversely polarized initial beams these contributions are first order
anomalous coupling corrections to the Standard Model (SM) contributions. We
present and analyse the main features of the SM and anomalous coupling
contributions. We show how differences between SM and anomalous coupling
contributions provide means to search for anomalous coupling manifestations at
future e^+ e^- linear colliders.Comment: 28 pages in LaTeX, including 7 encapsulated PostScript figures,

Time invariance violating nuclear electric octupole moments
The existence of a nuclear electric octupole moment (EOM) requires both
parity and time invariance violation. The EOMs of odd nuclei that are
induced by a particular T- and P-odd interaction are calculated. We compare
such octupole moments with the collective EOMs that can occur in nuclei having
a static octupole deformation. A nuclear EOM can induce a parity and time
invariance violating atomic electric dipole moment, and the magnitude of this
effect is calculated. The contribution of a nuclear EOM to such a dipole moment
is found, in most cases, to be smaller than that of other mechanisms of atomic
electric dipole moment production.Comment: Uses RevTex, 25 page
Irreversible Quantum Mechanics in the Neutral K-System
The neutral Kaon system is used to test the quantum theory of resonance
scattering and decay phenomena. The two dimensional Lee-Oehme-Yang theory with
complex Hamiltonian is obtained by truncating the complex basis vector
expansion of the exact theory in Rigged Hilbert space. This can be done for K_1
and K_2 as well as for K_S and K_L, depending upon whether one chooses the
(self-adjoint, semi-bounded) Hamiltonian as commuting or non-commuting with CP.
As an unexpected curiosity one can show that the exact theory (without
truncation) predicts long-time 2 pion decays of the neutral Kaon system even if
the Hamiltonian conserves CP.Comment: 36 pages, 1 PostScript figure include
Atrial fibrillation impairs the diagnostic performance of cardiac natriuretic peptides in dyspneic patients. results from the BACH Study (Biomarkers in ACute Heart Failure)
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of atrial fibrillation (AF) on the performance of mid-region amino terminal pro-atrial natriuretic peptide (MR-proANP) in comparison with the B-type peptides (BNP and NT-proBNP) for diagnosis of acute heart failure (HF) in dyspneic patients. Background: The effects of AF on the diagnostic and prognostic performance of MR-proANP in comparison with the B type natriuretic peptides have not been previously reported. Methods: A total of 1,445 patients attending the emergency department with acute dyspnea had measurements taken of MR-proANP, BNP, and NT-proBNP values on enrollment to the BACH trial and were grouped according to presence or absence of AF and HF. Results: AF was present in 242 patients. Plasma concentrations of all three peptides were lowest in those with neither AF nor HF and AF without HF was associated with markedly increased levels (p < 0.00001). HF with or without AF was associated with a significant further increment (p < 0.00001 for all three markers). Areas under receiver operator characteristic curves (AUCs) for discrimination of acute HF were similar and powerful for all peptides without AF (0.893 to 0.912; all p < 0.001) with substantial and similar reductions (0.701 to 0.757) in the presence of AF. All 3 peptides were independently prognostic but there was no interaction between any peptide and AF for prediction of all-cause mortality. Conclusions: AF is associated with increased plasma natriuretic peptide (MR-proANP, BNP and NT-proBNP) levels in the absence of HF. The diagnostic performance of all three peptides is impaired by AF. This warrants consideration of adjusted peptide thresholds for diagnostic use in AF and mandates the continued search for markers free of confounding by AF
Explicit CP violation in the Dine-Seiberg-Thomas model
The possibility of explicit CP violation is studied in a supersymmetric model
proposed by Dine, Seiberg, and Thomas, with two effective dimension-five
operators. The explicit CP violation may be triggered by complex phases in the
coefficients for the dimension-five operators in the Higgs potential, and by a
complex phase in the scalar top quark masses. Although the scenario of explicit
CP violation is found to be inconsistent with the experimental data at LEP2 at
the tree level, it may be possible at the one-loop level. For a reasonable
parameter space, the masses of the neutral Higgs bosons and their couplings to
a pair of bosons are consistent with the LEP2 data, at the one-loop level.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Cabibbo Mixing and the Search for CP Violation
We examine certain extensions of the standard model in which violation
is spontaneous and the strong problem is resolved. In these models, the quark mixing matrix is neither real nor unitary. However, to a
precision of 0.1%, it is real and orthogonal. There are no readily observable
-violating effects besides those in the neutral kaon system.Comment: 6 pages, latex, no figure

Cardiac Biomarkers and Risk of Atrial Fibrillation in Chronic Kidney Disease: The CRIC Study.
Background We tested associations of cardiac biomarkers of myocardial stretch, injury, inflammation, and fibrosis with the risk of incident atrial fibrillation (AF) in a prospective study of chronic kidney disease patients. Methods and Results The study sample was 3053 participants with chronic kidney disease in the multicenter CRIC (Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort) study who were not identified as having AF at baseline. Cardiac biomarkers, measured at baseline, were NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide), high-sensitivity troponin T, galectin-3, growth differentiation factor-15, and soluble ST-2. Incident AF ("AF event") was defined as a hospitalization for AF. During a median follow-up of 8Â years, 279 (9%) participants developed a new AF event. In adjusted models, higher baseline log-transformed NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide) was associated with incident AF (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] per SD higher concentration: 2.11; 95% CI, 1.75, 2.55), as was log-high-sensitivity troponin T (HR 1.42; 95% CI, 1.20, 1.68). These associations showed a dose-response relationship in categorical analyses. Although log-soluble ST-2 was associated with AF risk in continuous models (HR per SD higher concentration 1.35; 95% CI, 1.16, 1.58), this association was not consistent in categorical analyses. Log-galectin-3 (HR 1.05; 95% CI, 0.91, 1.22) and log-growth differentiation factor-15 (HR 1.16; 95% CI, 0.96, 1.40) were not significantly associated with incident AF. Conclusions We found strong associations between higher NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide) and high-sensitivity troponin T concentrations, and the risk of incident AF in a large cohort of participants with chronic kidney disease. Increased atrial myocardial stretch and myocardial cell injury may be implicated in the high burden of AF in patients with chronic kidney disease
