Common Carp Abundance and Age Structure in East and West Lake Winona

    Get PDF
The objective of this project was to determine if populations of Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) in East Lake Winona varied from West Lake Winona carp populations in abundance and age/size structure. Field work included boat-electrofishing along shorelines of East and West Lake Winona, extracting 3-4 scales, weighing, and measuring length of each Common Carp caught. Lab work included aging each common carp caught using a dissecting microscope, fine-tip permanent marker, and calipers to determine the distance of each growth ring from the center of the scale. A total of 44 Common Carp were sampled during the study, 14 individuals from East Lake Winona and 30 individuals from West Lake Winona. West Lake had a Common Carp density of 26.25 fish per hectare and East Lake had a density of 10.00 fish per hectare. Age-size structure showed a difference in the common carp populations between East Lake Winona and West Lake Winona.https://openriver.winona.edu/urc2019/1098/thumbnail.jp

    Maine’s Aquaculture Sector & Its R&D Priorities

    Get PDF
Within a competitive world economy, Maine’s economic prosperity is dependent on its geography, physical resources and human capital. In this context, Maine’s coastline and marine resources represent a unique asset supporting a wide spectrum of interlinked sectors and within this spectrum the aquaculture sector plays a major role. Of the approximate 107 aquaculture businesses in production in Maine in 2014, 71 replied to the 2015 Maine Aquaculture Economic Impact Survey. In order to provide current insights on the nature of Maine’s industry, the study aims to provide an up-to-date and accurate understanding of the economic impact aquaculture has on the state of Maine, and to determine aquaculture business owner and farm demographics

Hyperspherical Description of the Degenerate Fermi Gas: S-wave Interactions

We present a unique theoretical description of the physics of the spherically trapped NN-atom degenerate Fermi gas (DFG) at zero temperature based on an ordinary Schr\"{o}dinger equation with a microscopic, two body interaction potential. With a careful choice of coordinates and a variational wavefunction, the many body Schr\"{o}dinger equation can be accurately described by a \emph{linear}, one dimensional effective Schr\"{o}dinger equation in a single collective coordinate, the rms radius of the gas. Comparisons of the energy, rms radius and peak density of ground state energy are made to those predicted by Hartree-Fock (HF). Also the lowest radial excitation frequency (the breathing mode frequency) agrees with a sum rule calculation, but deviates from a HF prediction

    Maine Aquaculture Economic Impact Report

Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms (such as finfish, shellfish or plants) in water (freshwater or marine). Aquaculture produces food fish, sport fish, bait fish, ornamental fish, crustaceans, mollusks, algae, sea vegetables, research animals, and fish eggs. Aquaculture also includes the production of ornamental fish for the aquarium trade, and growing plant species used in a range of food, pharmaceutical, nutritional, and biotechnology products. Stock restoration or “enhancement” is a form of aquaculture in which hatchery fish and shellfish are released into the wild to rebuild wild populations or coastal habitats such as oyster reefs. Business entities practicing stock enhancement did not report revenue for the purposes of this report
