    SDSS Catalog of Stars in the Draco Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

    The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has scanned the entire region containing the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy to 23rd magnitude in g*. We present a catalog of stars found in a 453 square arcminute, elliptical region centered on the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Objects in the catalog are matched with five previously published catalogs. The catalog contains SDSS photometry for 5634 individual objects, and also the photometry from matches to any of the other catalogs. A comparison of the photometry between catalogs allows us to identify 142 candidate variable objects. One hundred and twelve of the suspected variables have colors consistent with RR Lyrae variables.Comment: To appear in ApJS 14 pages, 6 figure

    Pharmacokinetics and relative bioavailability of an oral amoxicillin-apramycin combination in pigs

    <div><p>A new compound granular premix of amoxicillin (20% w/w dry mass)/apramycin (5% w/w dry mass) was developed, and its pharmacokinetics and relative bioavailability were determined in pigs following oral administration following a cross-over study design. The pharmacokinetic parameters of amoxicillin (t<sub>1/2λ</sub> = 6.43 ± 4.85h, C<sub>max</sub> = 3.2 ± 1.35 μg·mL<sup>-1</sup>, T<sub>max</sub> = 1.92 ± 0.58, AUC<sub>INF</sub> = 8.98 ± 2.11 h·μg·mL<sup>-1</sup>) and apramycin (t<sub>1/2λ</sub> = 8.67±4.4h, C<sub>max</sub> = 0.23 ± 0.12 μg·mL<sup>-1</sup>, T<sub>max</sub> = 2.25 ± 0.82 h, AUC<sub>INF</sub> = 12.37 ± 8.64h·μg·mL<sup>-1</sup>) when administered as the amoxicillin-apramycin granular premix did not significantly differ from those for the single-ingredient powder form of each component. The relative bioavailability of amoxicillin following oral administration of the amoxicillin-apramycin granular premix was 22.62% when compared to the intramuscular administration of commercial amoxicillin sodium-powder. This is the first report of a new amoxicillin-apramycin combination which has a potential veterinary application the for prevention and treatment digestive tract infections in pigs.</p></div

    Hydrological Characteristics Change of Hala Lake and Its Response to Climate Change, 1987–2018

    Lakes on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) are an indicator of global climate change. The study on the factors driving lake change on the TP can help us understand its response to climate change. In this study, Landsat and ICESat data were used to obtain the variations of area, water level, and storage of Hala Lake and the area of glaciers in the Hala Lake Basin during 1987–2018. Combined with meteorological data, climate change trends and the factors driving Hala Lake change in the last 30 years were analyzed. The contribution of glacier mass loss to lake recharge was estimated by the water balance of Hala Lake. The results showed that Hala Lake has experienced three stages: slight expansion (1987–1994), shrinkage (1995–2001) and rapid expansion (2002–2018) during the study period. The rate of glacial melting continued to decline during the study period. Precipitation was the main factor that drove the hydrological characteristic changes in Hala Lake. The step change points of annual precipitation and temperature occurred in 2001, almost the same time that Hala Lake began expanding rapidly

    Effects of Apigenin and Astragalus Polysaccharide on the Cryopreservation of Bull Semen

    The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of apigenin and astragalus polysaccharides on the cryopreservation of bovine semen. Apigenin, astragalus polysaccharides, or their combination were added to a frozen diluent of bovine semen. Afterwards, Computer Assisted Semen Analysis (CASA), membrane functionality, acrosome integrity, mitochondrial integrity, CAT, SOD, GSH-Px, MDA, and ROS detection were conducted. The results showed that adding 0.2 mmol/L AP or 0.5 mg/mL APS could improve the quality of frozen sperm. Compared to 0.2 mmol/L AP alone, the combination of 0.2 mmol/L AP and 0.3 mg/mL APS significantly increased the total motility (TM), average path distance (DAP), straight line distance (DSL), average path velocity (VAP), curvilinear velocity (VCL), wobble (WOB), and sperm CAT and SOD levels (p &lt; 0.05), while reducing the ROS and MDA levels (p &lt; 0.05). These results indicated that the addition of 0.2 mmol/L AP or 0.5 mg/mL APS alone has a protective effect on the freezing of bovine semen. Compared to the addition of 0.2 mmol/L AP, a combination of 0.2 mmol/L AP and 0.3 mg/mL APS could further improve the quality of frozen semen

    Nondestructive Testing and Visualization of Catechin Content in Black Tea Fermentation Using Hyperspectral Imaging

    Catechin is a major reactive substance involved in black tea fermentation. It has a determinant effect on the final quality and taste of made teas. In this study, we applied hyperspectral technology with the chemometrics method and used different pretreatment and variable filtering algorithms to reduce noise interference. After reduction of the spectral data dimensions by principal component analysis (PCA), an optimal prediction model for catechin content was constructed, followed by visual analysis of catechin content when fermenting leaves for different periods of time. The results showed that zero mean normalization (Z-score), multiplicative scatter correction (MSC), and standard normal variate (SNV) can effectively improve model accuracy; while the shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA), the variable combination population analysis genetic algorithm (VCPA-GA), and variable combination population analysis iteratively retaining informative variables (VCPA-IRIV) can significantly reduce spectral data and enhance the calculation speed of the model. We found that nonlinear models performed better than linear ones. The prediction accuracy for the total amount of catechins and for epicatechin gallate (ECG) of the extreme learning machine (ELM), based on optimal variables, reached 0.989 and 0.994, respectively, and the prediction accuracy for EGC, C, EC, and EGCG of the content support vector regression (SVR) models reached 0.972, 0.993, 0.990, and 0.994, respectively. The optimal model offers accurate prediction, and visual analysis can determine the distribution of the catechin content when fermenting leaves for different fermentation periods. The findings provide significant reference material for intelligent digital assessment of black tea during processing

    Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins and Bamboo Leaf Flavonoids Improve the Quality of Bull Semen Cryopreservation

    It is important to inhibit oxidative stress to maintain sperm motility during cryopreservation. The present study was performed to investigate the effects of supplementing oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC) and bamboo leaf flavonoids (BLF) or their combination as an extender for Simmental bull semen freezing. OPC, BLF, or their combination were added to the frozen diluent of bovine semen. Afterwards, computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA), detection of membrane functionality, acrosome integrity, mitochondrial integrity, CAT, SOD, GSH-PX, MDA, and ROS were conducted. The results showed that adding 50 mg/L OPC or 4 mg/L BLF could improve the quality of frozen sperm. Compared with 50 mg/L OPC alone, the combination of 50mg/L OPC and 2 mg/L BLF significantly increased the kinematic parameters of sperm, and sperm CAT, GSH-PX and SOD levels (p p < 0.05). These results indicated that compared to the addition of 50 mg/L OPC alone, a combination of 50 mg/L OPC and 2 mg/L BLF could further improve the quality of frozen semen. The results could provide theoretical data support for the development of a new protective agent and are significant for the cryopreservation of bovine semen in the future

    Disturbances of the gut microbiota-derived tryptophan metabolites as key actors in vagotomy-induced mastitis in mice

    Summary: Previous studies have demonstrated that gut microbiota dysbiosis promotes the development of mastitis. The interaction of the vagus nerve and gut microbiota endows host homeostasis and regulates disease development, but whether the vagus nerve participates in the pathogenesis of mastitis is unclear. Here, vagotomized mice exhibit disruption of the blood-milk barrier and mammary gland inflammation. Notably, mastitis and barrier damage caused by vagotomy are dependent on the gut microbiota, as evidenced by antibiotic treatment and fecal microbiota transplantation. Vagotomy significantly alters the gut microbial composition and tryptophan metabolism and reduces the 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA) level. Supplementation with 5-HIAA alleviates vagotomy-induced mastitis, which is associated with the activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and subsequent inhibition of the NF-κB pathway. Collectively, our findings indicate the important role of the vagus-mediated gut-mammary axis in the pathogenesis of mastitis and imply a potential strategy for the treatment of mastitis by targeting the vagus-gut microbiota interaction

    Optimal Allocation of Water Resources Based on Water Supply Security

    Under the combined impacts of climate change and human activities, a series of water issues, such as water shortages, have arisen all over the world. According to current studies in Science and Nature, water security has become a frontier critical topic. Water supply security (WSS), which is the state of water resources and their capacity and their capacity to meet the demand of water users by water supply systems, is an important part of water security. Currently, WSS is affected by the amount of water resources, water supply projects, water quality and water management. Water shortages have also led to water supply insecurity. WSS is now evaluated based on the balance of the supply and demand under a single water resources condition without considering the dynamics of the varying conditions of water resources each year. This paper developed an optimal allocation model for water resources that can realize the optimal allocation of regional water resources and comprehensively evaluate WSS. The objective of this model is to minimize the duration of water shortages in the long term, as characterized by the Water Supply Security Index (WSSI), which is the assessment value of WSS, a larger WSSI value indicates better results. In addition, the simulation results of the model can determine the change process and dynamic evolution of the WSS. Quanzhou, a city in China with serious water shortage problems, was selected as a case study. The allocation results of the current year and target year of planning demonstrated that the level of regional comprehensive WSS was significantly influenced by the capacity of water supply projects and the conditions of the natural water resources. The varying conditions of the water resources allocation results in the same year demonstrated that the allocation results and WSSI were significantly affected by reductions in precipitation, decreases in the water yield coefficient, and changes in the underlying surface
