Affine maps of density matrices
For quantum systems described by finite matrices, linear and affine maps of
matrices are shown to provide equivalent descriptions of evolution of density
matrices for a subsystem caused by unitary Hamiltonian evolution in a larger
system; an affine map can be replaced by a linear map, and a linear map can be
replaced by an affine map. There may be significant advantage in using an
affine map. The linear map is generally not completely positive, but the linear
part of an equivalent affine map can be chosen to be completely positive and
related in the simplest possible way to the unitary Hamiltonian evolution in

Axial charges of octet and decuplet baryons
We present a study of axial charges of baryon ground and resonant states with
relativistic constituent quark models. In particular, the axial charges of
octet and decuplet , , , , , and
baryons are considered. The theoretical predictions are compared to existing
experimental data and results from other approaches, notably from lattice
quantum chromodynamics and chiral perturbation theory. The relevance of axial
charges with regard to -dressing and spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking
is discussed
Empirical distributions of galactic spin parameters from the SDSS
Using simple dimensional arguments for both spiral and elliptical galaxies,
we present formulas to derive an estimate of the halo spin parameter
for any real galaxy, in terms of common observational parameters. This allows a
rough estimate of , which we apply to a large volume limited sample of
galaxies taken from the SDSS data base. The large numbers involved (11,597)
allow the derivation of reliable distributions, as signal adds up
significantly in spite of the errors in the inferences for particular galaxies.
We find that if the observed distribution of is modeled with a
log-normal function, as often done for this distribution in dark matter halos
that appear in cosmological simulations, we obtain parameters and , interestingly consistent with
values derived from simulations. For spirals, we find a good correlation
between empirical values of and visually assigned Hubble types,
highlighting the potential of this physical parameter as an objective

The effect of supersymmetric CP phases on Chargino-Pair Production via Drell-Yan Process at the LHC
We compute the rates for pp annihilation into chargino-pairs via Drell-Yan
process taking into account the effects of supersymmetric soft phases, at
proton-proton collider. In particular, the phase of the mu parameter gains
direct accessibility via the production of dissimilar charginos. The phases of
the trilinear soft masses do not have a significant effect on the cross

Cohomological non-rigidity of generalized real Bott manifolds of height 2
We investigate when two generalized real Bott manifolds of height 2 have
isomorphic cohomology rings with Z/2 coefficients and also when they are
diffeomorphic. It turns out that cohomology rings with Z/2 coefficients do not
distinguish those manifolds up to diffeomorphism in general. This gives a
counterexample to the cohomological rigidity problem for real toric manifolds
posed in \cite{ka-ma08}. We also prove that generalized real Bott manifolds of
height 2 are diffeomorphic if they are homotopy equivalent
Fermi Surface of CrV across the Quantum Critical Point
We have measured de Haas-van Alphen oscillations of CrV, , at high fields for samples on both sides of the quantum critical
point at . For all samples we observe only those oscillations
associated with a single small hole band with magnetic breakdown orbits of the
reconstructed Fermi surface evident for . The absence of oscillations
from Fermi surface sheets most responsible for the spin density wave (SDW) in
Cr for is further evidence for strong fluctuation scattering of these
charge carriers well into the paramagnetic regime. We find no significant mass
enhancement of the carriers in the single observed band at any . An
anomalous field dependence of the dHvA signal for our crystal at
particular orientations of the magnetic field is identified as due to magnetic
breakdown that we speculate results from a field induced SDW transition at high

Mapping Global Star Formation in the Interacting Galaxy Pair Arp32
A multi-wavelength set of photometric data including UV (GALEX), optical, near-IR, infrared (Spitzer) and radio (VLA 20cm) images and spectroscopic observations are used to map the dust-obscured and unobscured star formation in the galaxy pair Arp 32. The system consists of an actively starforming galaxy and another one with depressed star formation. The most active galaxy has disrupted morphology and different sites of star formation. Spectroscopic data show hints of nuclear activity in its core, intense star formation in limited regions of the galaxy as well as an underlying population of stars witnessing a past episode of star formation. Current star formation rates are estimated from UV and bolometric IR luminosities
