The role of the Cucumber mosaic virus 2b protein in viral movement and symptom induction
The Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) 2b protein is a counter-defense factor and symptom determinant. Conserved domains in the 2b protein sequence were mutated in the 2b gene of strain Fny-CMV. The effects of these mutations were assessed by infection of Nicotiana tabacum, N. benthamiana, and Arabidopsis thaliana (ecotype Col-0) with mutant viruses and by expression of mutant 2b transgenes in A. thaliana. We confirmed that two nuclear localization signals were required for symptom induction and found that the N-terminal domain was essential for symptom induction. The C-terminal domain and two serine residues within a putative phosphorylation domain modulated symptom severity. Further infection studies were conducted using Fny-CMVΔ2b, a mutant that cannot express the 2b protein and that induces no symptoms in N. tabacum, N. benthamiana, or A. thaliana ecotype Col-0. Surprisingly, in plants of A. thaliana ecotype C24, Fny-CMVΔ2b induced severe symptoms similar to those induced by the wild-type virus. However, C24 plants infected with the mutant virus recovered from disease while those infected with the wild-type virus did not. Expression of 2b transgenes from either Fny-CMV or from LS-CMV (a mild strain) in Col-0 plants enhanced systemic movement of Fny-CMVΔ2b and permitted symptom induction by Fny-CMVΔ2b. Taken together, the results indicate that the 2b protein itself is an important symptom determinant in certain hosts. However, they also suggest that the protein may somehow synergize symptom induction by other CMV-encoded factors
Obstructed D-Branes in Landau-Ginzburg Orbifolds
We study deformations of Landau-Ginzburg D-branes corresponding to obstructed
rational curves on Calabi-Yau threefolds. We determine D-brane moduli spaces
and D-brane superpotentials by evaluating higher products up to homotopy in the
Landau-Ginzburg orbifold category. For concreteness we work out the details for
lines on a perturbed Fermat quintic. In this case we show that our results
reproduce the local analytic structure of the Hilbert scheme of curves on the
threefold.Comment: 44 pages; v3: typos correcte
Resonant CP Violation in Higgs Radiation at e^+e^- Linear Collider
We study resonant CP violation in the Higgsstrahlung process e^+e^- ->
H_{1,2,3} (Z -> e^+e^-, \mu^+\mu^-) and subsequent decays H_{1,2,3} -> b
\bar{b}, \tau^-\tau^+, in the MSSM with Higgs-sector CP violation induced by
radiative corrections. At a high-energy e^+e^- linear collider, the recoil-mass
method enables one to determine the invariant mass of a fermion pair produced
by Higgs decays with a precision as good as 1 GeV. Assuming an integrated
luminosity of 100/fb, we show that the production lineshape of a coupled system
of neutral Higgs bosons decaying into b\bar{b} quarks is sensitive to the
CP-violating parameters. When the Higgs bosons decay into \tau^-\tau^+, two CP
asymmetries can be defined using the longitudinal and transverse polarizations
of the tau leptons. Taking into account the constraints from electric dipole
moments, we find that these CP asymmetries can be as large as 80 %, in a
tri-mixing scenario where all three neutral Higgs states of the MSSM are nearly
degenerate and mix significantly.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Lepton Flavor Violation in Supersymmetric SO(10) Grand Unified Models
The study for lepton flavor violation combined with the neutrino oscillation
may provide more information about the lepton flavor structure of the grand
unified theory. In this paper, we study two lepton flavor violation processes,
and , in the context of supersymmetric SO(10)
grand unified models. We find the two processes are both of phenomenological
interest. In particular the latter may be important in some supersymmetric
parameter space where the former is suppressed. Thus, Z-dacay may offer another
chance for looking for lepton flavor violation.Comment: 26 pages, 10 figure
Consumers\u27 Misunderstanding of Health Insurance.
We report results from two surveys of representative samples of Americans with private health insurance. The first examines how well Americans understand, and believe they understand, traditional health insurance coverage. The second examines whether those insured under a simplified all-copay insurance plan will be more likely to engage in cost-reducing behaviors relative to those insured under a traditional plan with deductibles and coinsurance, and measures consumer preferences between the two plans. The surveys provide strong evidence that consumers do not understand traditional plans and would better understand a simplified plan, but weaker evidence that a simplified plan would have strong appeal to consumers or change their healthcare choices

Freeze-In Production of FIMP Dark Matter
We propose an alternate, calculable mechanism of dark matter genesis,
"thermal freeze-in," involving a Feebly Interacting Massive Particle (FIMP)
interacting so feebly with the thermal bath that it never attains thermal
equilibrium. As with the conventional "thermal freeze-out" production
mechanism, the relic abundance reflects a combination of initial thermal
distributions together with particle masses and couplings that can be measured
in the laboratory or astrophysically. The freeze-in yield is IR dominated by
low temperatures near the FIMP mass and is independent of unknown UV physics,
such as the reheat temperature after inflation. Moduli and modulinos of string
theory compactifications that receive mass from weak-scale supersymmetry
breaking provide implementations of the freeze-in mechanism, as do models that
employ Dirac neutrino masses or GUT-scale-suppressed interactions. Experimental
signals of freeze-in and FIMPs can be spectacular, including the production of
new metastable coloured or charged particles at the LHC as well as the
alteration of big bang nucleosynthesis.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures, PDFLaTex. References adde
Quantum effects in a superconducting glass model
We study disordered Josephson junctions arrays with long-range interaction
and charging effects. The model consists of two orthogonal sets of positionally
disordered parallel filaments (or wires) Josephson coupled at each crossing
and in the presence of a homogeneous and transverse magnetic field. The large
charging energy (resulting from small self-capacitance of the ultrathin wires)
introduces important quantum fluctuations of the superconducting phase within
each filament. Positional disorder and magnetic field frustration induce
spin-glass like ground state, characterized by not having long-range order of
the phases. The stability of this phase is destroyed for sufficiently large
charging energy. We have evaluated the temperature vs charging energy phase
diagram by extending the methods developed in the theory of infinite-range spin
glasses, in the limit of large magnetic field. The phase diagram in the
different temperature regimes is evaluated by using variety of methods, to wit:
semiclassical WKB and variational methods, Rayleigh-Schr\"{o}dinger
perturbation theory and pseudospin effective Hamiltonians. Possible
experimental consequences of these results are briefly discussed.Comment: 17 pages REVTEX. Two Postscript figures can be obtained from the

Does the `Higgs' have Spin Zero?
The Higgs boson is predicted to have spin zero. The ATLAS and CMS experiments
have recently reported of an excess of events with mass ~ 125 GeV that has some
of the characteristics expected for a Higgs boson. We address the questions
whether there is already any evidence that this excess has spin zero, and how
this possibility could be confirmed in the near future. The excess observed in
the gamma gamma final state could not have spin one, leaving zero and two as
open possibilities. We calculate the angular distribution of gamma gamma pairs
from the decays of a spin-two boson produced in gluon-gluon collisions, showing
that is unique and distinct from the spin-zero case. We also calculate the
distributions for lepton pairs that would be produced in the W W* decays of a
spin-two boson, which are very different from those in Higgs decays, and note
that the kinematics of the event selection used to produce the excess observed
in the W W* final state have reduced efficiency for spin two.Comment: 22 pages, 22 figures, Version accepted for publication in JHEP,
