    Soil properties of cultivation sites for mountain-cultivated ginseng at local level

    AbstractBackgroundIdentifying suitable site for growing mountain-cultivated ginseng is a concern for ginseng producers. This study was conducted to evaluate the soil properties of cultivation sites for mountain-cultivated ginseng in Hamyang-gun, which is one of the most well-known areas for mountain-cultivated ginseng in Korea.MethodsThe sampling plots from 30 sites were randomly selected on or near the center of the ginseng growing sites in July and August 2009. Soil samples for the soil properties analysis were collected from the top 20 cm at five randomly selected points.ResultsMountain-cultivated ginseng was grown in soils that varied greatly in soil properties on coniferous, mixed, and deciduous broad-leaved stand sites of elevations between > 200 m and < 1,000 m. The soil bulk density was higher in Pinus densiflora than in Larix leptolepis stand sites and higher in the < 700-m sites than in > 700-m sites. Soil pH was unaffected by the type of stand sites (pH 4.35–4.55), whereas the high-elevation sites of > 700 m were strongly acidified, with pH 4.19. The organic carbon and total nitrogen content were lower in the P. densiflora stand sites than in the deciduous broad-leaved stand sites. Available phosphorus was low in all of the stand sites. The exchangeable cation was generally higher in the mixed and low-elevation sites than in the P. densiflora and high-elevation sites, respectively.ConclusionThese results indicate that mountain-cultivated ginseng in Korea is able to grow in very acidic, nutrient-depleted forest soils

    Subcutaneous Sacrococcygeal Myxopapillary Ependymoma in Asian Female:A Case Report

    Subcutaneous sacrococcygeal myxopapillary ependymoma is extremely rare tumor that has a tendency to develop in children and adolescents. There have been several case reports and sporadic reports in the literature. However, no case has been reported in an Asian patient, to the best of our knowledge. We describe a 25-year-old Asian female patient with a subcutaneous sacrococcygeal myxopapillary ependymoma that had been clinically diagnosed as a pilonidal cyst. The tumor was treated successfully by surgical excision and the patient is doing well without evidence of local recurrence or distant metastasis at 2 years after surgery.

    Thermoelectric materials, which can change the waste heat into the usable electricity, are interested in various field of applications such as vehicle, ship, power plane, and so on. To enhance the thermoelectric properties, high electrical conductivity, high Seebeck coefficient, and low thermal conductivity should be conducted, however, the trade-off relation between electronic property and thermal property in terms of carrier concentration could be the bottle-neck on the enhancement of thermoelectric properties of the materials. In this presentation, we discuss with the graphene incorporation in the conventional thermoelectric materials, which could lead to independently control electric and thermal properties

    Tau functions as Widom constants

    We define a tau function for a generic Riemann-Hilbert problem posed on a union of non-intersecting smooth closed curves with jump matrices analytic in their neighborhood. The tau function depends on parameters of the jumps and is expressed as the Fredholm determinant of an integral operator with block integrable kernel constructed in terms of elementary parametrices. Its logarithmic derivatives with respect to parameters are given by contour integrals involving these parametrices and the solution of the Riemann-Hilbert problem. In the case of one circle, the tau function coincides with Widom's determinant arising in the asymptotics of block Toeplitz matrices. Our construction gives the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno tau function for Riemann-Hilbert problems of isomonodromic origin (Painlev\'e VI, V, III, Garnier system, etc) and the Sato-Segal-Wilson tau function for integrable hierarchies such as Gelfand-Dickey and Drinfeld-Sokolov.Comment: 26 pages, 6 figure

    A Distributed ADMM Approach to Non-Myopic Path Planning for Multi-Target Tracking

    This paper investigates non-myopic path planning of mobile sensors for multi-target tracking. Such problem has posed a high computational complexity issue and/or the necessity of high-level decision making. Existing works tackle these issues by heuristically assigning targets to each sensing agent and solving the split problem for each agent. However, such heuristic methods reduce the target estimation performance in the absence of considering the changes of target state estimation along time. In this work, we detour the task-assignment problem by reformulating the general non-myopic planning problem to a distributed optimization problem with respect to targets. By combining alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) and local trajectory optimization method, we solve the problem and induce consensus (i.e., high-level decisions) automatically among the targets. In addition, we propose a modified receding-horizon control (RHC) scheme and edge-cutting method for efficient real-time operation.     Effect of two different exercises on balance, pain and ankle motor function in male college students with chronic ankle instability

    Strength and proprioceptive exercise are known to be representative exercise methods used in patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) and they are effective in restoring ankle stability and body balance, which gets reduced by repetitive ankle sprains. But, there is a lack of data comparing the effects of strengthening or proprioceptive exercise rehabilitation program for CAI patients. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of a 4-week exercise program on ankle range of motion (ROM), static/dynamic balance, and drop landing in college students with CAI. The subjects of this study were 21 male college students who had the Cumberland ankle instability tool (CAIT) questionnaire scores of 24 or less, and they were divided into three groups; the non-treated group (NTG), the traditional strength exercise group (SEG) and the proprioceptive exercise group (PEG). The exercise rehabilitation program was applied 3 times a week for 4 weeks. To examine the difference between groups, CAIT, visual analogue scale (VAS), body composition, ankle ROM, one-leg standing with eyes closed and Y-balance test (YBT) as well as center of pressure (COP) 95% confidence ellipse area during drop landing were measured before and after the exercise intervention. CAIT scores and static balance were significantly increased in the PEG compared to the NTG and the SEG, and ankle dorsiflexion ROM and Y-balance were significantly increased in the SEG and the PEG compared to the NTG. In addition, pain, ankle inversion ROM, and COP 95% confidence ellipse area were significantly reduced in the SEG and the PEG compared to the NTG. The proprioceptive exercise program is thought to be effective therapeutic approach on improving the symptoms of CAI patients
