The Future of Confucian Political Philosophy

    Get PDF
On February 14, 2017, Joseph Chan and Stephen Angle convened a Roundtable on the Future of Confucian Political Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong. Eight invited speakers each offered thoughts on the main topic, followed by discussion among the panelists and responses to questions from the audience. This transcript has been reviewed and edited by the main participants. Much of the discussion revolves around the relations and tensions between Confucian political philosophy as academic theory-construction and the lived realities of citizens in the modern world, especially in East Asia. How is Confucian theorizing connected to Confucian activism? Another central concern is democracy—as value or as institution, as necessary in pluralistic societies or as problematic monopolizer of political discourse. We also discuss translation, republicanism, meritocracy, the proposals of Jiang Qing and Daniel Bell, and the role of Confucianism in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea

Generalizations of Ripley's K-function with Application to Space Curves

The intensity function and Ripley's K-function have been used extensively in the literature to describe the first and second moment structure of spatial point sets. This has many applications including describing the statistical structure of synaptic vesicles. Some attempts have been made to extend Ripley's K-function to curve pieces. Such an extension can be used to describe the statistical structure of muscle fibers and brain fiber tracks. In this paper, we take a computational perspective and construct new and very general variants of Ripley's K-function for curves pieces, surface patches etc. We discuss the method from [Chiu, Stoyan, Kendall, & Mecke 2013] and compare it with our generalizations theoretically, and we give examples demonstrating the difference in their ability to separate sets of curve pieces.Comment: 9 pages & 8 figure

Anisotropic flow background to jet-correlation relative to reaction plane: A revisit of the mathematical framework

We derive the flow-background formula for jet-correlation analysis with high pT trigger particles in any azimuth window relative to reaction plane, extending the mathematic framework of previous study in [J. Bielcikova, et al., Phys. Rev. C 69 (2004) 021901(R)].Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, published versio

When Does Competition Lead to Efficient Investments?

    Get PDF
The paper studies agents’ investment decisions between general and speci…c in-vestments under di¤erent ownership structures in a thin, decentralized market where each agent’s decision a¤ects the decisions and welfare of other (otherwise unrelated) agents mainly through indirect market linkages. The paper demonstrates that “excess competition among investors,” in every equilibrium, will lead to e¢cient investments, regardless of asset ownership. In the absence of such excess competition, in every equilibrium, ine¢cient investments will result, unless some special ownership arrange-ment is made. The problem in which the choice variable is investment level, instead of investment type, is also studied.

Forest Species Identification with High Spectral Resolution Data

    Get PDF
Data collected over the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes Test Site and the Saginaw Forest Test Site (Michigan) with the JPL Airborne Imaging Spectrometer and the Collins' Airborne Spectroradiometer are being used for forest species identification. The linear discriminant function has provided higher identification accuracies than have principal components analyses. Highest identification accuracies are obtained in the 450 to 520 nm spectral region. Spectral bands near 1,300, 1,685 and 2,220 nm appear to be important, also

Removing the Digital Divide for Senior Web Users

    Get PDF
It is hard for the elderly to use the internet to find the resource they want. Usually help is needed for them to complete the task on the technology things. The main reason for this project is to research ideas on encourage senior people to make use of the web to locate helps they want, such as finding volunteers and professional helps. The scope of this project is to develop a new way of web access and content presentation methodologies that let senior people getting help from volunteers and various service providers more easily that incorporates social networking technology e.g. Facebook. By incorporating the social network web site like Facebook into the web application, senior people will be able to find volunteering help or other related service providers through social networking. Volunteers will show up in Google map in search results for senior to easily locate helps. Senior people can also search for self help videos tutorials through the web application search engine. A mobile version of the senior user application will also be developed for easy access on the road. Other features that benefit senior users includes voice input, control / content posting and collaborative social networking where a sponsors would sponsor a help task volunteer undertake
