Zonal Velocity Bands and the Solar Activity Cycle

    Get PDF
We compare the zonal flow pattern in subsurface layers of the Sun with the distribution of surface magnetic features like sunspots and polar faculae. We demonstrate that in the activity belt, the butterfly pattern of sunspots coincides with the fast stream of zonal flows, although part of the sunspot distribution does spill over to the slow stream. At high latitudes, the polar faculae and zonal flow bands have similar distributions in the spatial and temporal domains.Comment: To appear in Solar Physic

    Faster-than-light motion in quasars

    Get PDF
Over the past fifteen years, observations of some quasars with the techniques of very-long-baseline interferometry have shown that the angular separation between pairs of radio-emitting regions in their cores is increasing year after year. If the quasars are indeed as far away as implied by Hubble's law, then these angular motions translate into linear speeds several times the speed of light. Several theoretical scenarios have been proposed to show that the observed motions are illusory. The leading contender in this field- the relativistic beam model- and an alternative offered by the concept of a gravitational screen are described and compared in the light of recent observational data

Creation of Dirac Particles in the Presence of a Constant Electric Field in an Anisotropic Bianchi I Universe

In this article we compute the density of Dirac particles created by a cosmological anisotropic Bianchi I universe in the presence of a constant electric field. We show that the particle distribution becomes thermal when one neglects the electric interaction.Comment: 9 page

    Rotation and pseudo-rotation

Eigenvectors of stress-energy tensor (the source in Einstein's equations) form privileged bases in description of the corresponding space-times. When one or more of these vector fields are rotating (the property well determined in differential geometry), one says that the space-time executes this rotation. Though the rotation in its proper sense is understood as that of a timelike congruence (vector field), the rotation of a spacelike congruence is not a less objective property if it corresponds to a canonical proper basis built of the just mentioned eigenvectors. In this last case, we propose to speak on pseudo-rotation. Both properties of metric, its material sources, and space-time symmetries are considered in this paper.Comment: 13 pages, no figures, contains parts of the PhD Thesis of H. Vargas Rodr\'igue

Cost-effectiveness Study of Antihypertensive Drugs in Mumbai, India

    Get PDF
Hypertension is a serious global public health problem. It accounts for 10% of all deaths in India and is the leading noncommunicable disease.1 Recent studies have shown that the prevalence of hypertension is 25% in urban and 10% in rural people in India.2 It exerts a substantial public health burden on cardiovascular health status and health care systems in India.3 Antihypertensive treatment effectively reduces hypertension-related morbidity and mortality.1 The cost of medications has always been a barrier to effective treatment

    Solar cycle theory of pulsars

The plausibility of the Solar Cycle type of mechanism for pulsar phenomenon is examined. The relevant time scales are found to be within the range of the observed pulsar periods

Scalar Synchrotron Radiation in the Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter Geometry

    Get PDF
We present a complete relativistic analysis for the scalar radiation emitted by a particle in circular orbit around a Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter black hole. If the black hole is large, then the radiation is concentrated in narrow angles- high multipolar distribution- i.e., the radiation is synchrotronic. However, small black holes exhibit a totally different behavior: in the small black hole regime, the radiation is concentrated in low multipoles. There is a transition mass at M=0.427RM=0.427 R, where RR is the AdS radius. This behavior is new, it is not present in asymptotically flat spacetimes.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, published version.
