An investigation of students algebraic proficiency from a structure sense perspective

    Get PDF
Structure sense can be interpreted as an intuitive ability towards symbolic expressions, including skills to perceive, to interpret, and to manipulate symbols in different roles. This ability shows student algebraic proficiency in dealing with various symbolic expressions and is considered important to be mastered by secondary school students for advanced study or professional work. This study, therefore, aims to investigate students algebraic proficiency in terms of structure sense. To reach this aim, we set up a qualitative case study with the following three steps. First, after conducting a literature study, we designed structure sense tasks according to structure sense characteristics for the topic of equations. Second, we administered an individual written test involving 28 grade XI students (16-17 year-old). Third, we analyzed students written work using a structure sense perspective. The results showed that about two-Thirds of the participated students lack of structure sense in which they tend to use more procedural strategies than structure sense strategies in solving equations. We conclude that the perspective of structure sense provides a fruitful lens for assessing students algebraic proficiency

Localized Castleman's disease presenting as a vascular right iliac fossa mass

Castleman's disease is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder of unknown aetiology. The presentation is varied, diagnosis is difficult, and optimum management is still unknown. We report our experience with a case of Castleman's disease in a 34-year-old woman who presented with pallor, hepatosplenomegaly, and a right iliac fossa mass that was 5 cm in diameter. This was initially diagnosed as a soft tissue sarcoma and preoperative tumour embolization was planned before excision. Mesenteric arteriogram revealed that the feeder arteries arose from the superior mesenteric artery and embolization was aborted for fear of causing bowel ischaemia. On laparotomy, lymphoid enlargement was found between the leaves of the jejunal mesentery. The tumour was relatively avascular and the overlying mesenteric vessels contributed to the duplex ultrasound and computerized tomography appearance of hypervascularity. The tumour with the mesentery and the overlying segment of jejunum was excised completely. Histopathology confirmed Castleman's disease. The purpose of this report is to present this rare case that caused a diagnostic dilemma and to review the management of this disorder

Deep learning inspired feature engineering for classifying tremor severity

Bio-signals pattern recognition systems can be impacted by several factors with a potential to limit their associated performance and clinical translation. Among these factors, selecting the optimum feature extraction method, that can effectively exploit the interaction between the temporal and spatial information, is the most prominent. Despite the potential of deep learning (DL) models for extracting temporal, spatial, or temporal-spatial information, they are typically restricted by their need for a large amount of training data. The deep wavelet scattering transform (WST) is a relatively recent advancement within the DL literature to replace expensive convolution neural networks models with computationally less demanding methods. However, while some studies have used WST to extract features from biological signals, it has not been investigated before for electromyogram (EMG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) signals feature extraction. To investigate the hypothesis of the usefulness of WST for processing EMG and EEG signals, this study used a tremor dataset collected by the authors from people with tremor disorders. Specifically, the proposed work achieved three goals: (a) study the performance of extracting features from low-density EMG signals (8 channels), using the WST approach, (b) study the effect of extracting the features from high-density EEG signals (33 channels), using WST and study its robustness against changing the spatial and temporal aspects of classification accuracy, and (c) classify tremor severity using the WST method and compare the results with other well-known feature extraction approaches. The classification error rates were significantly reduced (maximum of nearly 12 %) compared with other feature sets

Operational risk analysis for undesired polymerization in overhead condenser of butadiene column

    Get PDF
An accident model based on fault tree analysis was developed and applied to analyze the recurrence of undesired reactions producing popcorn polymers in the overhead condenser of an industrial butadiene distillation column. The modeling framework incorporates reliability data associated with asset integrity and human performance along with data on selected process variables. These variables, i.e., pressure, feed velocity and temperature of the condenser, which were identified from root cause analysis of the incident provided dynamic contributions to the model, and were represented in the form of Weibull distribution functions. The results obtained proved the potentials of the proposed methodology. Based on the case study considered, operating pressure was identified as the most influential process variables that needed closer monitoring. The methodology provides an opportunity for risk management to be implemented dynamically to facilitate maintenance plan and management of change

In an increasingly competitive and changing environment, women leaders in education face a variety of challenges. Although women dominate the labor force in large number, however in higher education sector, most of senior lecturers are men. The purpose of this study is to examine the leadership competency of women lecturer in the perspective of a lecturer at University XYZ and the effect of gender in ranking of competency skill. This study also intended to know the role of ranking in advancing women to a senior lecturer positions. This quantitative study used simple random sampling technique with 361 lecturers of University XYZ as the sample of the study. Questionnaire was distributed through online. The data was then analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Science v22 (SPSS version 22). The results shows that self-management are the most important leadership competencies needed by women lecturers, follow by communication, business acumen, and leadership ability. Leadership competency is needed for the career development especially for women leaders in education. The model of leadership competency is a guideline for a women leader to evaluate their leadership competency in education sector
