    Get PDF
This is a literature-based paper that looked at the role of Social Studies education in teaching, protecting and advocating for human rights in Nigeria. The paper discussed the meaning of human rights and some of the philosophies and theories of human rights. The paper paid attention to the two human rights theories that influenced the present-day discussions of human rights – the Will theory and the Interest theory. The categories of human rights were also discussed. The writer looked at different Human Rights violations in Nigeria under the following sub-headings; government violations, child labor and child marriage and women abuse. She then discussed the role of Social Studies education in Human Rights Education and concluded by saying that since Human Right education is a program that includes both process dimension and content that  since Social Studies primary responsibility is to develop reflective citizens, Social Studies teachers must be adequately prepared to enable them teach the concepts adequately because Human Right is a key component of 21st century civic education.   Article visualizations

    Pathophysiology of Schizophrenia

    Get PDF
This poster presents the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. This topic was selected because it helps to understand the pathophysiology of the condition as well as the clinical significance of the condition. Schizophrenia is a condition that is not well known and there are misconceptions in the community about the condition. I believe by understanding its etiology, pathophysiology, and presenting signs and symptoms; I will be able to give the best nursing care to my patients. Patients with the condition exhibit five major symptoms including delusions, hallucinations, disorganized, disorganised speech or thinking, and inability to function normally. Under DSM V diagnosis criteria, a patient must meet two of the following conditions for a period of one month, including delusions, hallucinations, disorganised speech, or negative symptoms. The aetiology of the condition is not well known but physical, genetic, psychological, and environmental factors play a role. The underlying pathophysiology of schizophrenia involves dysregulation of different pathways in the brain function. The pathway involves abnormalities in neurotransmission with either excess or deficiency in neurotransmissions. There are three main theories that explain the pathophysiology including dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate. Understanding the pathophysiology has a number of significances. One, it helps to gain an insight and important knowledge about how the condition affects the body and how it develops with time. Two, it provides the basis for developing appropriate medication that targets the exact part of the brain or a step in its etiology. Three, it provides information that helps in formulation of the best nursing care plan and interventions for the patients. Implications of for nursing care is that nurses must engage in developing trust and communication with such patients and they must also develop a maintenance treatment plan with psychotic medications as well as psychosocial therapy

    Get PDF
Technology and Social Media websites are now an indispensable part of our lives. It is almost impossible not to look at our accounts on any day. Most of us especially 16years and above have a profile on one of the social networks and it can be observed that a sizable number are students who use the different websites for different purposes. The focus of this research is on finding out if Social Studies lecturers in the faculty of Education are using Social Media in teaching their students and to identify ways, they are incorporating it. The population of the study is 21 lecturers (5 Social Studies lecturers, four males and one female, all senior lecturers) and 16 non-Social Studies Lecturers who teach Social Studies courses. The method of data collection was questionnaire. The data was analyzed using simple percentages. The results show among other things that the lecturers believed that social media network platforms are important pedagogical tools, many of them are not using them as a teaching and learning tool. The researcher therefor recommended that lecturers and their students should undergo training on ways of using these platforms as a teaching tool.  Article visualizations

Numerical Design of a 3-Stage Cascaded Thermal Energy Storage System for Solar Application

    Get PDF
The analysis of a three-stage cascaded thermal energy storage is presented in this dissertation. Cascaded thermal energy storage systems has many advantages over conventional thermal energy storages, majorly it allows for maintaining of a nigh-constant temperature between the HTF and PCM during the charging and discharging cycles leading to improved performance of the system. This dissertation investigates the performance and transient response of a packed bed operating under high-temperature conditions with phase change materials in varying encapsulations (cascaded in a three-stage format) during charging and discharging cycle by employing computational numerical techniques via commercially available ANSYS Fluent software. The analysis was performed for nine different encapsulation geometries with increased surface area and constant volume in comparison to the base geometry (sphere) to determine the effects of each new encapsulation on the performance of the thermal energy storage (TES). The computational model used in the development of this work compares well with the experimental results by Raul [1]. Additionally, the effect of packing scheme/PCM layout is also investigated in this work. Comparative data analysis was performed on the TES with the various PCM encapsulation designs and the standard spherical PCM encapsulation to determine which geometry provides better performance during charging and discharging cycles. The results of this study show that the thermal performance of the cascaded thermal energy storage improves with each new encapsulation as evidenced by the decreases in charging and discharging times in comparison to the base encapsulation. This study also highlights which capsule design is most practical when considering the bed dimension increases/ decreases with in increasing thermal performance. This study's findings can serve as a benchmark for future optimization of cascaded thermal energy storage systems

Developmental Nationalism: The Role of the African Youth

    Get PDF
Nationalism has long been a subject of discussion in the literature of development. It helps facilitate development by creating a strong sense of national identity which allows the citizenry to commit to nation-building. This paper examines the role of the African youth in promoting the continent’s development through developmental nationalism. Africa’s young people are recognized as the continent’s greatest assets and the most suited to play this role. The fact that the continent needs development suggests a compelling need for the potentials of youth to be harnessed to drive any development agenda. In the past, young people played historic roles in promoting development through nationalistic causes but today’s youth are facing increasing difficulties in sustaining this legacy. This paper, therefore, makes a case for rebuilding this past legacy and for the empowerment of Africa’s young people to drive the continent’s development

Acute Inferior Mesenteric Venous Thrombosis in a Child

    Get PDF
Inferior mesenteric venous thrombosis is a very rare condition with serious management challenge, especially in a resource‑poor environment. The acute variety is associated with high morbidity and mortality, especially if there are accompanying bowel infarction and peritonitis. The case of a 12‑year‑old boy was referred from a private hospital after a failed attempt at appendicectomy. The patient presented with features of generalized peritonitis and severe sepsis. Exploratory laparotomy after optimization showed massive hemorrhagic ascetic fluid, extensive left colonic gangrene extending from distal transverse colon to the sigmoid colon, and thrombosis in the branches of the inferior mesenteric vessel. The patient died 36 h postoperatively at the intensive care unit. A high index of suspicion and early bowel resection in cases of associated bowel infarction will improve outcome. Keywords: Inferior mesenteric vein, morbidity, mortality, thrombosi
