    Edge Critical Behaviour of the 2-Dimensional Tri-critical Ising Model

    Using previous results from boundary conformal field theory and integrability, a phase diagram is derived for the 2 dimensional Ising model at its bulk tri-critical point as a function of boundary magnetic field and boundary spin-coupling constant. A boundary tri-critical point separates phases where the spins on the boundary are ordered or disordered. In the latter range of coupling constant, there is a non-zero critical field where the magnetization is singular. In the former range, as the temperature is lowered, the boundary undergoes a first order transition while the bulk simultaneously undergoes a second order transition.Comment: 6 pages, RevTex, 3 postscript figure

    Epigenetic Inactivation of the miR-124-1 in Haematological Malignancies

    miR-124-1 is a tumour suppressor microRNA (miR). Epigenetic deregulation of miRs is implicated in carcinogenesis. Promoter DNA methylation and histone modification of miR-124-1 was studied in 5 normal marrow controls, 4 lymphoma, 8 multiple myeloma (MM) cell lines, 230 diagnostic primary samples of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML), chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), MM, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), and 53 MM samples at stable disease or relapse. Promoter of miR-124-1 was unmethylated in normal controls but homozygously methylated in 4 of 4 lymphoma and 4 of 8 myeloma cell lines. Treatment of 5-Aza-2′-deoxycytidine led to miR-124-1 demethylation and re-expression of mature miR-124, which also associated with emergence of euchromatic trimethyl H3K4 and consequent downregulation of CDK6 in myeloma cells harboring homozygous miR-124-1 methylation. In primary samples at diagnosis, miR-124-1 methylation was absent in CML but detected in 2% each of MM at diagnosis and relapse/progression, 5% ALL, 15% AML, 14% CLL and 58.1% of NHL (p<0.001). Amongst lymphoid malignancies, miR-124-1 was preferentially methylated in NHL than MM, CLL or ALL. In primary lymphoma samples, miR-124-1 was preferentially hypermethylated in B- or NK/T-cell lymphomas and associated with reduced miR-124 expression. In conclusion, miR-124-1 was hypermethylated in a tumour-specific manner, with a heterochromatic histone configuration. Hypomethylation led to partial restoration of euchromatic histone code and miR re-expression. Infrequent miR-124-1 methylation detected in diagnostic and relapse MM samples showed an unimportant role in MM pathogenesis, despite frequent methylation found in cell lines. Amongst haematological cancers, miR-124-1 was more frequently hypermethylated in NHL, and hence warrants further study

    Dugu Ji (725-777), Beamter in der unruhigen Gesellschaft der mittleren Tang-Dynastie (618-907), ist einer der wichtigsten Vorläufer bei kulturellen Reformversuchen, wie die bisherigen Forschungen über die Tang-Zeit einstimmig feststellen. Meine Doktorarbeit „Dugu Ji (725-777). Leben und Werk“ versucht ein möglichst genaues Portrait von ihm zu geben, anhand seines Lebens den Werdegang eines Beamten zu jener Zeit darzustellen und sein Wirken in jener normlosen Gesellschaft als Beispielfall zu beschreiben. Die offiziellen Geschichtswerke, Jiu Tangshu und Xin Tangshu, sind als Eingangsmaterial analysiert. Die von Dugu Ji hinterlassene Schriftensammlung Pilingji, die sein Schüler Liang Su zusammengefügt hat, dient als entscheidende Quelle, um seinen Glauben und seine Gedanken zu portraitieren. Zunächst analysiert die Dissertation die Lebensdaten des Dugu Ji. Herkunft, Ausbildung, Staatsprüfung, Beamtenlaufbahn, schließlich Dahinscheiden sind ausführlich dargestellt. Weiter befasst sich die Dissertation mit der Analyse einer Reihe der Schriften von Dugu Ji

    Atypical burkitt's lymphoma transforming from follicular lymphoma

    Amongst follicular lymphoma that transforms into a high-grade lymphoma, majority are diffuse large B cell lymphoma. Here we reported a rare atypical Burkitt's lymphoma transformation from an asymptomatic follicular lymphoma. Lymph node biopsy showed a composite lymphoma with infiltration of the inter-follicular areas by high grade small non-cleaved lymphoma cells amongst neoplastic follicles. Moreover, FISH and molecular genetic study confirmed concomitant MYC translocations and t(14;18) in the high-grade component, thereby suggesting the transformation of atypical Burkitt's lymphoma from an undiagnosed antecedent follicular lymphoma. The disease followed an aggressive clinical course, terminating in refractory disease 13 months after diagnosis. This is followed by a comprehensive review of the literature on lymphoma transformations from underlying follicular lymphoma after acquisition of MYC translocation, using Burkitt's lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, transformation and MYC translocations as keywords

    An Energy Dependent Model for Type I Magnetic Contrast in the Scanning Electron Microscope

    The modelling of the magnetic contrast phenomenon in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) is important in understanding the physics of the contrast mechanism and the associated signal detection. In this paper, we report an improved analytical model for Type I magnetic contrast calculations using an approximate form of the Chung and Everhart secondary electron (SE) energy distribution. Previous studies have neglected this factor by assuming a mono-energetic model in order to simplify the calculations. This new model can be used to study different material specimens by appropriate choice of the work function and field-distance integral. The effect of energy filtering on the Type I magnetic contrast and quality factor can also be studied with the improved model by substituting the low and high energy limits of the filtered SE distribution into the closed-form analytical expressions obtained. Results of the above-mentioned effects and the effect of collector aperturing are reported in this paper using the new improved energy dependent model

    Cardiovascular disease remains the leading global cause of death. Early intervention, with lifestyle advice alongside appropriate medical therapies, is fundamental to reduce patient mortality among high-risk individuals. For those who live with the daily challenges of cardiovascular disease, pharmacological management aims to relieve symptoms and prevent disease progression. Despite best efforts, prescription drugs are not without their adverse effects, which can cause significant patient morbidity and consequential economic burden for healthcare systems. Patients with cardiovascular diseases are often among the most vulnerable to adverse drug reactions due to multiple co-morbidities and advanced age. Examining a patient’s genome to assess for variants that may alter drug efficacy and susceptibility to adverse reactions underpins pharmacogenomics. This strategy is increasingly being implemented in clinical cardiology to tailor patient therapies. The identification of specific variants associated with adverse drug effects aims to predict those at greatest risk of harm, allowing alternative therapies to be given. This review will explore current guidance available for pharmacogenomic-based prescribing as well as exploring the potential implementation of genetic risk scores to tailor treatment. The benefits of large databases and electronic health records will be discussed to help facilitate the integration of pharmacogenomics into primary care, the heartland of prescribing

    Common association of haemolytic uraemic syndrome with invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae infection in five Chinese paediatric patients

    Haemolytic uraemic syndrome is an important cause of acute renal impairment in childhood. We review the incidence, and clinical and laboratory features of haemolytic uraemic syndrome in a Chinese population. Five patients were identified from 2006 to 2008. All patients were young children with associated invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae pulmonary infection. Serotypes 3, 14, and 19A were confirmed in four patients. The classical post-diarrhoeal form associated with Escherichia coli (O157:H7) infection was not seen. One patient died of acute respiratory failure. Streptococcus pneumoniae infection, as an associated condition in haemolytic uraemic syndrome, is important and relatively common in Chinese patients, especially among children. The acute clinical picture is similar to that reported in the western literature, except for an uncommon association with meningitis. The medium-term renal outcome of the Chinese population appears to be more favourable than the Caucasians. Widespread vaccination against Streptococcus pneumoniae may have resulted in changes in bacterial epidemiology and clinicians should be continuously aware of this severe disease. The use of washed blood components for transfusion in the acute stage requires further study.published_or_final_versio
