    Effect of sub- and supercritical water treatments on the physicochemical properties of crab shell chitin and its enzymatic degradation

    This study examined the effects of sub- and supercritical water pretreatments on the physicochemical properties of crab shell α-chitin and its enzymatic degradation to obtain N,N′-diacetylchitobiose (GlcNAc)2. Following sub- and supercritical water pretreatments, the protein in the crab shell was removed and the residue of crab shell contained α-chitin and CaCO3. Prolonged pretreatment led to α-chitin decomposition. The reaction of pure α-chitin in sub- and supercritical water pretreatments was investigated separately; we observed lower mean molecular weight and weaker hydrogen bonds compared with untreated α-chitin. (GlcNAc)2 yields from enzymatic degradation of subcritical (350 °C, 7 min) and supercritical water (400 °C, 2.5 min) pretreated crab shell were 8% and 6%, compared with 0% without any pretreatment. This study shows that sub- and supercritical water pretreatments of crab shell provide to an alternative method to the use of acid and base for decalcification and deproteinization of crab shell required for (GlcNAc)2 production.ArticleCarbohydrate Polymers. 134:718-725 (2015)journal articl

    Comparison of maxillary stability after Le Fort I osteotomy for occlusal cant correction surgery and maxillary advanced surgery

    金沢大学医学部附属病院歯科口腔外科Objective: To compare postoperative maxillary stability following Le Fort I osteotomy for the correction of occlusal cant as compared with conventional Le Fort I osteotomy for maxillary advancement. Study design: The subjects were 40 Japanese adults with jaw deformities. Of these, 20 underwent a Le Fort I osteotomy and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) to correct asymmetric skeletal morphology and inclined occlusal cant. The other 20 patients underwent a Le Fort I osteotomy and sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) to advance the maxilla. Lateral and posteroanterior cephalograms were taken postoperatively and assessed statistically. Thereafter, the 2 groups were followed for time-course changes. Results: There was no significant difference between the 2 groups with regard to time-course changes during the immediate postoperative period. Conclusion: This suggests that maxillary stability after Le Fort I osteotomy for cant correction does not differ from that after Le Fort I osteotomy for maxillary advancement. © 2007 Mosby, Inc.     Evaluation of upper lip hypoesthesia with a trigeminal somatosensory-evoked potential following Le Fort I osteotomy in combination with mandibular osteotomy

    金沢大学医学部附属病院歯科口腔外科Purpose: The purpose of this study was to objectively evaluate hypoesthesia of the upper lip following Le Fort I osteotomy in combination with mandibular osteotomy with trigeminal somatosensory evoked potential (TSEP). Subjects and methods: The subjects consisted of 25 patients with mandibular prognathism with maxillary retrognathism mandibular prognathism with or without asymmetry, who underwent Le Fort I osteotomy in combination with sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) or intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO).Trigeminal nerve hypoesthesia at the region of the upper lip was assessed bilaterally by the TSEP method. The electrodes were placed exactly above the highest point of the vermilion border and on the mucosa of the upper lip. An electroencephalograph recording system (Neuropack Sigma; Nihon Koden Corp., Tokyo, Japan) was used to analyze the potentials. Each patient was evaluated preoperatively and then postoperatively at 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year. Results: The average measurable period and standard deviation of TSEP of the upper lip was 7.8 ± 10.7 weeks following Le Fort I osteotomy, TSEP of the lower lip was 4.6 ± 9.2 weeks in the patients who underwent SSRO with Le Fort I osteotomy, and 1.2 ± 0.4 weeks in the patients who underwent IVRO with Le Fort I osteotomy. Conclusion: This study objectively proved that hypoesthesia could appear in the upper lips following Le Fort I osteotomy with TSEP. The measurable period for the upper lip following Le Fort I osteotomy tended to be longer than that for the lower lip in the patients who underwent SSRO and IVRO with Le Fort I osteotomy. © 2007 Mosby, Inc.     The Efficacy of Software to Help Patients Understand Drug for Adjuvant Treatment for Breast Cancer: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

    We assessed the usefulness of ChemoCalc, a software package for calculating drug costs, in helping patients understand these costs. We randomly assigned, in a 1 : 1 ratio, 20 women who had undergone surgery for early breast cancer to a group that discussed adjuvant treatment with their physicians using the ChemoCalc software (ChemoCalc group) or a group that discussed adjuvant treatment without ChemoCalc (Usual Explanation group). The participants completed a five-grade evaluation questionnaire after these discussions. The primary endpoint was the intergroup comparison of the questionnaire scores regarding participants’ understanding of their treatment-associated drug costs. Median age was not significantly different between the ChemoCalc group and Usual Explanation group (57 vs. 50, respectively; p=0.27). Patients in the ChemoCalc group had a significantly higher perceived level of understanding of the drug cost than those in the Usual Explanation group (5 [4-5] vs. 2.5 [1-5], respectively; p=0.002). Scores related to the patients’ perception that understanding drug costs is an important part of breast cancer treatment were also higher in the ChemoCalc group than the Usual Explanation group (5 [2-5] vs. 3 [1-5], respectively; p=0.049).     Condylar and disc positions after intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy with and without a Le Fort I osteotomy

    金沢大学医学部附属病院歯科口腔外科The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) morphology and clinical symptoms after intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) with and without a Le Fort I osteotomy. Of 50 Japanese patients with mandibular prognathism with mandibular and bimaxillary asymmetry, 25 underwent IVRO and 25 underwent IVRO in combination with a Le Fort I osteotomy. The TMJ symptoms and joint morphology, including disc tissue, were assessed preoperatively and postoperatively by magnetic resonance imaging and axial cephalogram. Improvement was seen in just 50% of joints with anterior disc displacement (ADD) that received IVRO and 52% of those that received IVRO with Le Fort I osteotomy. Fewer or no TMJ symptoms were reported postoperatively in 97% of the joints that received IVRO and 90% that received IVRO with Le Fort I osteotomy. Postoperatively, there were significant condylar position changes and horizontal changes in the condylar long axis on both sides in the two groups. There were no significant differences between improved ADD and unimproved ADD in condylar position change and the angle of the condylar long axis, although distinctive postoperative condylar sag was seen. These results suggest that IVRO with or without Le Fort I osteotomy can improve ADD and TMJ symptoms along with condylar position and angle, but it is difficult to predict the amount of improvement in ADD. © 2006 International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons

    Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Residential Water Use Behavior in Japan

    To investigate the effect of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic on residential water use behavior in Japan, we conducted a web-based survey of 1310 people throughout Japan in March 2021, one year after the initial spread of coronavirus. The survey was designed to provide an average picture of Japan. The survey revealed that the time respondents spent at home increased during the pandemic for both men and women in all age groups by an average of 1 h, an increase of 9%. Changes in water use behavior increased almost in proportion to the increase in time spent at home, except for the frequency of defecation, which was limited to once a day. The amount of time spent in the washroom increased by 13%, an increase of more than 1.4 times the increase in the amount of time spent at home. The additional 40% increase could be considered an effect of the awareness of disease prevention. The coronavirus pandemic is expected to end in the near future. In Japan, the pandemic has led to a strong push for the reform of work styles. Therefore, even in a post-coronavirus-pandemic society, changes in work styles may normalize the increased time spent at home and the proportional increase in water use. However, because the change in water use behavior caused by quarantine awareness is a result of the fear of coronavirus infection, it is possible that water use will gradually return to pre-pandemic levels once the source of the fear is removed. To reflect the changes in water use behavior in the design of facilities in the post-coronavirus-pandemic society, it is necessary to continue this survey even once the pandemic has ended
