Tunable current circulation in triangular quantum-dot metastructures

Advances in fabrication and control of quantum dots allow the realization of metastructures that may exhibit novel electrical transport phenomena. Here, we investigate the electrical current passing through one such metastructure, a system composed of quantum dots placed at the vertices of a triangle. The wave natural of quantum particles leads to internal current circulation within the metastructure in the absence of any external magnetic field. We uncover the relation between its steady-state total current and the internal circulation. By calculating the electronic correlations in quantum transport exactly, we present phase diagrams showing where different types of current circulation can be found as a function of the correlation strength and the coupling between the quantum dots. Finally, we show that the regimes of current circulation can be further enhanced or reduced depending on the local spatial distribution of the interactions, suggesting a single-particle scattering mechanism is at play even in the strongly-correlated regime. We suggest experimental realizations of actual quantum-dot metastructures where our predictions can be directly tested.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, the Supplemental Information is attached at the en

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>At least one-third of epithelial ovarian cancers are associated with the development of ascites containing heterogeneous cell populations, including tumor cells, inflammatory cells, and stromal elements. The components of ascites and their effects on the tumor cell microenvironment remain poorly understood. This study aimed to isolate and characterize stromal progenitor cells from the ascites of patients with epithelial ovarian adenocarcinoma (EOA).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Seventeen ascitic fluid samples and 7 fresh tissue samples were collected from 16 patients with EOA. The ascites samples were then cultured in vitro in varying conditions. Flow cytometry and immunocytochemistry were used to isolate and characterize 2 cell populations with different morphologies (epithelial type and mesenchymal type) deriving from the ascites samples. The in vitro cell culture model was established using conditional culture medium.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The doubling times of the epithelial type and mesenchymal type cells were 36 h and 48 h, respectively, indicating faster growth of the epithelial type cells compared to the mesenchymal type cells. Cultured in vitro, these ascitic cells displayed the potential for self-renewal and long-term proliferation, and expressed the typical cancer stem/progenitor cell markers CD44high, CD24low, and AC133+. These cells also demonstrated high BMP-2, BMP4, TGF-ÎČ, Rex-1, and AC133 early gene expression, and expressed EGFR, integrin α2ÎČ1, CD146, and Flt-4, which are highly associated with tumorigenesis and metastasis. The epithelial type cells demonstrated higher cytokeratin 18 and E-cadherin expression than the mesenchymal type cells. The mesenchymal type cells, in contrast, demonstrated higher AC133, CD73, CD105, CD117, EGFR, integrin α2ÎČ1, and CD146 surface marker expression than the epithelial type cells.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The established culture system provides an in vitro model for the selection of drugs that target cancer-associated stromal progenitor cells, and for the development of ovarian cancer treatments.</p

Blood-brain barrier opening in a large animal model using closed-loop microbubble cavitation-based feedback control of focused ultrasound sonication

Focused ultrasound (FUS) in combination with microbubbles has been established as a promising technique for noninvasive and localized Blood-brain barrier (BBB) opening. Real-time passive cavitation detection (PCD)-based feedback control of the FUS sonication is critical to ensure effective BBB opening without causing hemorrhage. This study evaluated the performance of a closed-loop feedback controller in a porcine model. Calibration of the baseline cavitation level was performed for each targeted brain location by a FUS sonication in the presence of intravenously injected microbubbles at a low acoustic pressure without inducing BBB opening. The target cavitation level (TCL) was defined for each target based on the baseline cavitation level. FUS treatment was then performed under real-time PCD-based feedback controller to maintain the cavitation level at the TCL. After FUS treatment, contrast-enhanced MRI and ex vivo histological staining were performed to evaluate the BBB permeability and safety. Safe and effective BBB opening was achieved with the BBB opening volume increased from 3.8 ± 0.7 to 53.6 ± 23.3 m

Emotion and Concentration Integrated System: Applied to the Detection and Analysis of Consumer Preference

With the expansion of consumer market, the appearance becomes an important issue when consumers make decisions under the situation of similar qualities and contents. Accordingly, to attract consumers, companies cost and take much attention on product appearance. Compared to using questionnaires individually, obtaining humans’ thoughts directly from their brains can accurately grasp the actual preference of consumers, which can provide effective and precious decisions for companies. \ In this study, consumers’ brainwaves which are related to concentration and emotion are extracted by wearing a portable and wireless Electroencephalography (EEG) device. The extracted EEG data are then trained by using perceptron learning algorithm (PLA) to make the judgments of concentration and emotion work well with each subject. They are then applied to the detection and analysis of consumer preference. Finally, the questionnaires are also performed and used as the reference on training process. They are integrated with brainwaves data to create one prediction model which can improve the accuracy significantly. The Partial Least Squares is used to compare the correlation between different factors in the model, to ensure the test can accurately meet consumers’ thoughts
