Benthic Oxygen Production in the Choptank Estuary

    Get PDF
Microphytobenthos (MPB) represent an important component of primary production in many coastal estuarine systems. The aim of this study is to determine which variables in the Chesapeake Bay are positively correlated with MPB oxygen production, and based on this correlation to develop a predictive relationship for estimating benthic primary production. Furthermore, this study estimates the proportion of MPB primary production to total primary production in the Chesapeake Bay. Oxygen flux rates were measured in the dark and in the light from sediment cores taken from three sites on the Chesapeake Bay. Flux rates ranged from 6000 mol O2 m-2 h-1 in the light to -3800 mol O2 m-2 h-1 in the dark treatment. From these rates and other measurements, we developed multiple linear regressions using sediment grain type and depth to predict oxygen production seasonally. We applied these relationships to sediment grain-size and bathymetry data using ArcMap software to create a spatial dimension to our predictive relationships. Based on our derived relationship, we estimated summer average benthic daily net production to be 123 ± 962 mg O2 m-2 d-1 between 0-3 meters. For the winter, we estimated the rate to be 152 ± 413 mg O2 m-2 d-1. For spring we had a weaker relationship, but we estimated benthic production to be -257 ± 123 mg O2 m-2 d-1. Using published pelagic data, we created a proportion of benthic to pelagic primary production, and we estimate that MPB provide approximately 12% of total primary production in the mid-bay region. Shallower depths contained a higher proportion of benthic O2 productivity to pelagic O2 production with the contrast peaking during the summer months

Naming is Power: Citation Practices in SoTL

Citing is a political act. It is a practice that can work both sides of the same coin: it can give voice, and it can silence. Through this research, we call for those contributing to the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) to attend to this duality explicitly and intentionally. In this multidisciplinary field, SoTL knowledge-producers bring the citation norms of their home disciplines, a habit that calls for interrogation and negotiation of the citation practices used in this shared space. The aim of our study was to gather data about how citation is practiced within the SoTL community: who we cite, how we cite, and what values, priorities, and politics are conveyed in these practices. We were also interested in whether any self-selected categories of identity (e.g., gender, career stage) related to self-described citation practices and priorities. Findings suggest several statistically significant relationships did emerge, which we identify as important avenues for further research and writing. We conclude with 10 principles of citation practices in SoTL.

ObjectivesAntiplatelet therapy following peripheral arterial endovascular intervention lacks high quality evidence to guide practice. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of three months of dual antiplatelet therapy on amputation-free survival following peripheral arterial endovascular intervention in patients with chronic limb threatening ischemia.MethodsA retrospective review of symptomatic patients undergoing primary peripheral arterial endovascular intervention over a seven-year period was performed. The primary outcome measure was amputation-free survival. A sample size calculation based on previous cohort studies suggested that 629 limbs would be required to show a difference between single and dual therapy. Kaplan-Meier estimates and multivariate logistic regression analysis of recorded baseline characteristics was performed to determine predictors of amputation-free survival. Dual antiplatelet therapy was routinely given for 3 months.Results754 limbs were treated with primary angioplasty and/or stenting over a 7-year period, 508 of these for chronic limb threatening ischemia. There was no difference in unadjusted amputation-free survival between patients with chronic limb threatening ischaemia taking single vs. dual antiplatelet therapy (69% vs. 74% respectively Log rank Chi2 = 0.1, p = .72). After adjusting for confounders, at 1 year there was also no significant difference in amputation-free survival between patients taking single vs. dual antiplatelet therapy [OR 0.8, 95% CI 0.5-1.2, p = .3]. There was no difference in rates of major bleeding between single and dual antiplatelet therapy.ConclusionsThere was no clear evidence of reduced amputation-free survival in patients with chronic limb threatening ischemia undergoing peripheral arterial endovascular intervention being treated with dual antiplatelet therapy for 3 months. This is at odds with other retrospective case series and highlights the limitations in basing clinical practice on such data. There is a need for an adequately powered, independent randomised trial to definitively answer the question

Polymorphism of the azobenzene dye compound methyl yellow

The crystal structure and polymorphism of the well-known aminoazobenzene, N,N-dimethyl-4-aminoazobenzene (DAB) are studied; a second polymorph of DAB reported and the relationship between the two polymorphs studied using differential scanning calorimetry and by evaluating their lattice energies and absorption spectra. Without significantly strong intermolecular interactions present in the two forms of DAB, a balance between conformational strain and a cumulative π-orbital overlapping effect results in the existence of the enantiotropically related polymorphs and their alternative packing arrangements. The UV/vis spectra of the two polymorphs are different, thus illustrating the significance of small structural changes on the colour of a material, which could behave differently under particular sensing conditions. DAB has been used primarily as an acid/base indicator solution and a dye molecule and the implications of the polymorphic relationships established here are discussed with respect to the range of applications this molecule finds as a sensor and for its incorporation into various functional films and devices

Activating transcription factor-4 promotes mineralization in vascular smooth muscle cells

Emerging evidence indicates that upregulation of the ER stress–induced pro-osteogenic transcription factor ATF4 plays an important role in vascular calcification, a common complication in patients with aging, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease (CKD). In this study, we demonstrated the pathophysiological role of ATF4 in vascular calcification using global Atf4 KO, smooth muscle cell–specific (SMC-specific) Atf4 KO, and transgenic (TG) mouse models. Reduced expression of ATF4 in global ATF4-haplodeficient and SMC-specific Atf4 KO mice reduced medial and atherosclerotic calcification under normal kidney and CKD conditions. In contrast, increased expression of ATF4 in SMC-specific Atf4 TG mice caused severe medial and atherosclerotic calcification. We further demonstrated that ATF4 transcriptionally upregulates the expression of type III sodium-dependent phosphate cotransporters (PiT1 and PiT2) by interacting with C/EBPβ. These results demonstrate that the ER stress effector ATF4 plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of vascular calcification through increased phosphate uptake in vascular SMCs

    Fragmentation of Massive Protostellar Disks

We examine whether massive-star accretion disks are likely to fragment due to self-gravity. Rapid accretion and high angular momentum push these disks toward fragmentation, whereas viscous heating and the high protostellar luminosity stabilize them. We find that for a broad range of protostar masses and for reasonable accretion times, massive disks larger than ~150 AU are prone to fragmentation. We develop an analytical estimate for the angular momentum of accreted material, extending the analysis of Matzner and Levin (2005) to account for strongly turbulent initial conditions. In a core-collapse model, we predict that disks are marginally prone to fragmentation around stars of about four to 15 solar masses -- even if we adopt conservative estimates of the disks' radii and tendency to fragment. More massive stars are progressively more likely to fragment, and there is a sharp drop in the stability of disk accretion at the very high accretion rates expected above 110 solar masses. Fragmentation may starve accretion in massive stars, especially above this limit, and is likely to create swarms of small, coplanar companions.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS, updated version with minor changes to tex

Magnetic coupling in a hybrid Mn(ii) acetylene dicarboxylate

The design of ligands that mediate through-bond long range super-exchange in metal–organic hybrid materials would expand chemical space beyond the commonly observed short range, low temperature magnetic ordering. Here we examine acetylene dicarboxylate as a potential ligand that could install long range magnetic ordering due to its spatially continuous frontier orbitals. Using a known Mn(II)-containing coordination polymer we compute and measure the electronic structure and magnetic ordering. In this case, the latter is weak owing to the sub-optimal ligand coordination geometry, with a critical temperature of 2.5 K

Solid-state interconversions: Unique 100% reversible transformations between the ground and metastable states in single-crystals of a series of nickel( II) nitro complexes

The solid-state, low-temperature linkage isomerism in a series of five square planar group 10 phosphino nitro complexes have been investigated by a combination of photocrystallographic experiments, Raman spectroscopy and computer modelling. The factors influencing the reversible solid-state interconversion between the nitro and nitrito structural isomers have also been investigated, providing insight into the dynamics of this process. The cis-[Ni(dcpe)(NO2)2] (1) and cis-[Ni(dppe)(NO2)2] (2) complexes show reversible 100 % interconversion between the η1-NO2 nitro isomer and the η1-ONO nitrito form when single-crystals are irradiated with 400 nm light at 100 K. Variable temperature photocrystallographic studies for these complexes established that the metastable nitrito isomer reverted to the ground-state nitro isomer at temperatures above 180 K. By comparison, the related trans complex [Ni(PCy3)2(NO2)2] (3) showed 82 % conversion under the same experimental conditions at 100 K. The level of conversion to the metastable nitrito isomers is further reduced when the nickel centre is replaced by palladium or platinum. Prolonged irradiation of the trans-[Pd(PCy3)2(NO2)2] (4) and trans-[Pt(PCy3)2(NO2)2] (5) with 400 nm light gives reversible conversions of 44 and 27 %, respectively, consistent with the slower kinetics associated with the heavier members of group 10. The mechanism of the interconversion has been investigated by theoretical calculations based on the model complex [Ni(dmpe)Cl(NO2)]
