    Safety assessment of pedestrian-vehicle interaction at signalized intersections: An observational study

    Road safety is a crucial aspect of global policies and management. Surrogate Safety Measures (SSMs) have gained attention in the study of pedestrian safety. This study aims to establish an effective SSM methodology to analyze driver-pedestrian interactions. The analysis relies on SSM indicators, without the need for an initial classification of driver-pedestrian interactions into specific interaction patterns. The proposed methodology offers several advantages, including the accurate identification of conflicts through an affordable approach making it easily accessible for public administrations and authorities to assess pedestrian safety at road intersections. A dataset comprising 270 driver-pedestrian interactions, observed at three road intersections in Rome, Italy, was examined. The severity level of each event was assessed through a preliminary classification of each interaction into three patterns: high, low, and none. Subsequently, the severity levels were evaluated using three methods, employing Time-to-Collision (TTC), Post-Encroachment Time (PET), and a combination of TTC and PET. A comparison between the severity levels identified by the two approaches was conducted. The findings reveal that Method 2, utilizing PET, consistently identifies conflicts. Additionally, a binomial logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the variables that influence the likelihood of an interaction escalating into a conflict. The results demonstrate that the probability of conflict increases with the duration of a red signal, particularly for younger pedestrians

    Long-term low-dose tolvaptan efficacy and safety in SIADH

    Purpose: Tolvaptan, a selective vasopressin V2-receptor antagonist, is approved for the treatment of SIADH-related hyponatremia, but its use is limited. The starting dose is usually 15 mg/day, but recent clinical experience suggests a lower starting dose (<15 mg/day) to reduce the risk of sodium overcorrection. However, long-term low-dose efficacy and safety has not been explored, so far. Aim of our study is to characterize safety and efficacy of long-term SIADH treatment with low-dose Tolvaptan. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 11 patients receiving low-dose Tolvaptan (<15 mg/day) for chronic SIADH due to neurological, idiopathic and neoplastic causes. Plasma sodium levels were measured before and 1, 3, 5, 15 and 30 days after starting Tolvaptan and then at 3-month intervals. Anamnestic and clinical data were collected. Results: Mean time spanned 27.3 ± 29.8 months (range 6 months-7 years). Mean plasma sodium levels were within normal range 1, 3 and 6 months after starting Tolvaptan as well as after 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 years of therapy. Neither osmotic demyelination syndrome nor overcorrection were observed. Plasma sodium levels normalization was associated with beneficial clinical effects. Neurological patients obtained seizures disappearance, improvement in neurological picture and good recovery from rehabilitation. Neoplastic patients were able to start chemotherapy and improved their general condition. Patients did not show hypernatremia during long-term follow-up and reported mild thirst and pollakiuria. Conclusions: The present study shows that long-term low-dose Tolvaptan is safe and effective in SIADH treatment. No cases of overcorrection were documented and mild side effects were reported

    Displacement monitoring in airport runways by persistent scatterers SAR interferometry

    Deformations monitoring in airport runways and the surrounding areas is crucial, especially in case of low-bearing capacity subgrades, such as the clayey subgrade soils. An effective monitoring of the infrastructure asset allows to secure the highest necessary standards in terms of the operational and safety requirements. Amongst the emerging remote sensing techniques for transport infrastructures monitoring, the Persistent Scatterers Interferometry (PSI) technique has proven effective for the evaluation of the ground deformations. However, its use for certain demanding applications, such a as the assessment of millimetric differential deformations in airport runways, is still considered as an open issue for future developments. In this study, a time-series analysis of COSMO-SkyMed satellite images acquired from January 2015 to April 2019 is carried out by employing the PSI technique. The aim is to retrieve the mean deformation velocity and time series of the surface deformations occurring in airport runways. The technique is applied to Runway 3 at the “Leonardo da Vinci” International Airport in Rome, Italy. The proposed PSI technique is then validated by way of comparison with the deformation outcomes obtained on the runway by traditional topographic levelling over the same time span. The results of this study clearly demonstrate the efficiency and the accuracy of the applied PSI technique for the assessment of deformations in airport runways

    Helicobacter pylori and Epstein-Barr virus infection in gastric diseases: Correlation with IL-10 and IL1RN polymorphism.

    Introduction: Helicobacter pylori and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection have recently 23 been shown to be associated with gastric diseases. Polymorphisms in genes encoding 24 cytokines such as interleukin 10 (IL-10) and interleukin 1 Receptor (IL-1RN) influence 25 cytokine secretion levels and appear to contribute to the risk of developing gastroduodenal 26 diseases. 27 To our knowledge, this is the first preliminary study to address the association of 28 coinfection with H. pylori and EBV and their correlation with genetic predisposition in the 29 development of gastric diseases. 30 Methods: Gastric biopsy samples of 96 patients with different gastric diseases were used. 31 Results: Our results showed that the rate of co-infection was higher in patients with 32 gastric cancer than in patients with normal gastric mucosa, active chronic gastritis and 33 MALT lymphoma. As regards the characterization of H. pilory strains, the 34 polymorphism s1m1i1 of vacA gene was more frequent in patients with MALT 35 Lymphoma in comparison to others, while the polymorphism s2m2i2 was most 36 frequent in patients with normal gastric mucosa. In addition, patients who tested 37 positivefor the cagA gene were more frequently those affected with gastric cancer than 38 those with inactive chronic gastritis. Similarly, the patients with oipA gene ON were more 39 frequently those with gastric cancer than those with inactive chronic gastritis. 40 Conclusion: According to our analysis, there was no correlation between coinfection 41 and polymorphisms in genes encoding IL-10 and IL-1RN. We conclude that various 42 factors can be involved in the development of gastric diseases

This paper looks at employment in European high-tech manufacturing Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) during the recovery from the global financial and economic crisis: 2009 - 2011. Its aim is to study the relations between employment in said sector and macroeconomic, policy and structural factors. A simple regression is used to ascertain the influence of these factors on employment in high-tech manufacturing SMEs. Este artículo analiza el empleo en pequeñas y medianas empresas (SME en sus siglas en inglés) europeas que trabajan en sectores de alta y media tecnología y se centra en el periodo de recuperación de la crisis global y financiera del 2009-2011. El objetivo es estudiar las relaciones entre el empleo en dicho sector y la política macroeconómica y los factores estructurales. Se hace uso de una regresión simple para comprobar la influencia de dichos factores sobre el empleo en SME en sectores de alta tecnología. A partir de este análisis se extraen recomendaciones en materia de política económica.   &nbsp
