A fool proof carrier design for front access storage expansion board
Storage applications, by their very nature, need an expansion hardware to consolidate more hard drives to a controller. Typically the expansion hardware is designed as an independent printed circuit board and connect to the hard drive backplane in the opposite side of hard drives. When the system is installed in the rack, it requires users to move the whole system box from the position in order to open the lid. It also requires users to power off the system before disconnect the expansion board from the hard drive backplane
Haemophilus Aphrophilus Associated Spleen Abscess: An Unusual Presentation of Subacute Endocarditis
The HACEK group of bacteria (Haemophilus spp., Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Cardiobacterium hominis, Eikenella corrodens, Kingella spp.), is uncommon pathogens of infective endocarditis, but can cause life-threatening events such as heart failure or formation of lethal emboli. Here we report a 58-year-old Asian man with a past history of congenital valvular heart disease who presented with sudden onset of left flank pain followed by fever with chills for 2 weeks. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) indicated a 1.6 cm abscess in the spleen. Culturing indicated the presence of Haemophilus aphrophilus. We diagnosed the patient with subacute endocarditis complicated with spleen abscess. The patient recovered fully after two weeks antibiotic (Ceftriaxone) treatment. Clinicians should give further attention to infective endocarditis caused by bacteria in the HACEK group in patients with metastatic infection such as spleen abscess with suspected valvular heart disease
Control Design for Signal Transduction Networks
Signal transduction networks of biological systems are highly complex. How to mathematically describe a signal transduction network by systematic approaches to further develop an appropriate and effective control strategy is attractive to control engineers. In this paper, the synergism and saturation system (S-systems) representations are used to describe signal transduction networks and a control design idea is presented. For constructing mathematical models, a cascaded analysis model is first proposed. Dynamic analysis and controller design are simulated and verified
Plastic with Sheet Metal Rack Ear
Rack ears are used to mount electrical equipment in a rack. A rack ear is disclosed that combines sheet metal with plastic in order to improve design flexibility, reduce cost, and improve environmental friendliness
HLA typing in Taiwanese patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma
AbstractBackground/purposeThe human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system, which plays a vital role in immunity, is the most polymorphic gene complex found in the human genome. This study investigated HLA-related alleles and haplotypes in Taiwanese patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).Materials and methodsHLA class I (HLA-A and HLA-B) antigens and class II (HLA-DRB1) alleles were determined in 105 patients with OSCC and compared with those in 190 healthy controls. The antigens were measured serologically and the alleles by sequencing-based typing.ResultsCompared with the control group, patients with OSCC had higher frequencies of HLA-A24, HLA-B54, HLA-DRB1*0405, and HLA-DRB1*1201, while they had lower frequencies of HLA-B58 and HLA-DRB1*1302. Haplotype frequencies also varied significantly in individuals with OSCC, with certain haplotypes associated with lymph node metastases or a particular tumor stage.ConclusionThese results suggest that HLA genetic factors influence susceptibility to OSCC and perhaps to lymph node metastasis and tumor progression
Sarcoma of the Larynx: Treatment Results and Literature Review
BackgroundSarcomas of the larynx are rare neoplasms that constitute less than 1% of laryngeal malignancies. A Medline search found no large series focusing on laryngeal sarcomas. We reviewed the cases of laryngeal sarcomas treated in our cancer center and compared our experiences and treatment results with those from other centers.MethodsA retrospective review of 10 patients with laryngeal sarcoma treated in our institute between 1980 and 2000 was done to identify tumor characteristics, therapeutic modalities, and treatment outcomes.ResultsThe patients showed a male predominance (9/10) and presented 8 types of pathology. Nine patients underwent surgery, including 2 total laryngectomy, 4 partial laryngectomy, and 3 endoscopic laser cordectomy. During a median follow-up of 92 months, the 5-year overall survival and disease-specific survival were 76% and 90%, respectively. Two patients developed recurrence, including 1 local recurrence and 1 distant metastasis.ConclusionSurgical intervention was the first choice in the treatment of laryngeal sarcomas. The prognosis is relatively good when compared with sarcoma originating from other anatomic sites
Myricetin Increases Hepatic Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor α Protein Expression and Decreases Plasma Lipids and Adiposity in Rats
The aim of this study was to investigate the antiobesity and antihyperlipidaemic effects of myricetin. Myricetin exhibited a significant concentration-dependent decrease in the intracellular accumulation of triglyceride in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The high-fat diet (HFD)-fed rats were dosed orally with myricetin or fenofibrate, once daily for eight weeks. Myricetin (300 mg kg−1 per day) displayed similar characteristics to fenofibrate (100 mg kg−1 per day) in reducing lowered body weight (BW) gain, visceral fat-pad weights and plasma lipid levels of HFD-fed rats. Myricetin also reduced the hepatic triglyceride and cholesterol contents, as well as lowered hepatic lipid droplets accumulation and epididymal adipocyte size in HFD-fed rats. Myricetin and fenofibrate reversed the HFD-induced down-regulation of the hepatic peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR)α. HFD-induced decreases of the hepatic protein level of acyl-CoA oxidase and cytochrome P450 isoform 4A1 were up-regulated by myricetin and fenofibrate. The elevated expressions of hepatic sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs) of HFD-fed rats were lowered by myricetin and fenofibrate. These results suggest that myricetin suppressed BW gain and body fat accumulation by increasing the fatty acid oxidation, which was likely mediated via up-regulation of PPARα and down-regulation of SREBP expressions in the liver of HFD-fed rats
Observation of the Density Minimum in Deeply Supercooled Confined Water
Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) is used to measure the density of heavy
water contained in 1-D cylindrical pores of mesoporous silica material
MCM-41-S-15, with pores of diameter of 15+-1 A. In these pores the homogenous
nucleation process of bulk water at 235 K does not occur and the liquid can be
supercooled down to at least 160 K. The analysis of SANS data allows us to
determine the absolute value of the density of D2O as a function of
temperature. We observe a density minimum at 210+-5 K with a value of
1.041+-0.003 g/cm3. We show that the results are consistent with the
predictions of molecular dynamics simulations of supercooled bulk water. This
is the first experimental report of the existence of the density minimum in
supercooled water
