    RISK FACTORS RELATED TO ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT INJURY OF FEMALE BASKETBALL PLAYERS DURING STEPPING MOVEMENTS

    The purpose of this study was to compare the biomechanical factors related to anterior cruciate ligament injury during unanticipated movements after landing and immediately applied in stepping movements. Four healthy female basketball players were recruited in this study. All subjects were asked to perform five successful trials at each stepping movements after jump landing. Results of the current study showed that different step movements may result in different biomechanical factors to cause different ACL injury risk levels. Future studies should focus on investigating the best jump landing and stepping strategy, and analyzing better ways to coordinate lower extremity joints to reduce noncontact ACL injury risks

    IDENTIFYING GAIT ASYMMETRY USING DIGITAL SENSORS

    The purpose of this study was to determine which phases and kinematics were easier to identify gait asymmetry by using digital sensors. Sixteen participants were recruited in this study. The participants were requested to walk naturally under two conditions (with or without asymmetrical load). Four digital sensor sets were attached on 4 limbs to collect kinematics data. The results showed that only the AS1 of Medial-Later acceleration of upper limb on the stance phase significantly different between unloading and loading conditions; on the lower limb were AS1 of Superior-Inferior acceleration and Flex/Extension angular velocity on the swing phase. The digital sensors that attach on upper and lower limbs both can detect gait asymmetry, but the asymmetrical phase and kinematics are different on upper and lower limbs

    A probable aculeacin A acylase from the Ralstonia solanacearum GMI1000 is N-acyl-homoserine lactone acylase with quorum-quenching activity

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The infection and virulence functions of diverse plant and animal pathogens that possess quorum sensing systems are regulated by <it>N</it>-acylhomoserine lactones (AHLs) acting as signal molecules. AHL-acylase is a quorum quenching enzyme and degrades AHLs by removing the fatty acid side chain from the homoserine lactone ring of AHLs. This blocks AHL accumulation and pathogenic phenotypes in quorum sensing bacteria.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>An <it>aac </it>gene of undemonstrated function from <it>Ralstonia solanacearum </it>GMI1000 was cloned, expressed in <it>Escherichia coli</it>; it inactivated four AHLs that were tested. The sequence of the 795 amino acid polypeptide was considerably similar to the AHL-acylase from <it>Ralstonia </it>sp. XJ12B with 83% identity match and shared 39% identity with an aculeacin A acylase precursor from the gram-positive actinomycete <it>Actinoplanes utahensis</it>. Aculeacin A is a neutral lipopeptide antibiotic and an antifungal drug. An electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) analysis verified that Aac hydrolysed the amide bond of AHL, releasing homoserine lactone and the corresponding fatty acids. However, ESI-MS analysis demonstrated that the Aac could not catalyze the hydrolysis of the palmitoyl moiety of the aculeacin A. Moreover, the results of MIC test of aculeacin A suggest that Aac could not deacylate aculeacin A. The specificity of Aac for AHLs showed a greater preference for long acyl chains than for short acyl chains. Heterologous expression of the <it>aac </it>gene in <it>Chromobacterium violaceum </it>CV026 effectively inhibited violacein and chitinase activity, both of which were regulated by the quorum-sensing mechanism. These results indicated that Aac could control AHL-dependent pathogenicity.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This is the first study to find an AHL-acylase in a phytopathogen. Our data provide direct evidence that the functioning of the <it>aac </it>gene (NP520668) of <it>R. solanacearum </it>GMI1000 is via AHL-acylase and not via aculeacin A acylase. Since Aac is a therapeutic potential quorum-quenching agent, its further biotechnological applications in agriculture, clinical and bio-industrial fields should be evaluated in the near future.</p

    One-Fe versus Two-Fe Brillouin Zone of Fe-Based Superconductors: Creation of the Electron Pockets via Translational Symmetry Breaking

    We investigate the physical effects of translational symmetry breaking in Fe-based high-temperature superconductors due to alternating anion positions. In the representative parent compounds, including the newly discovered Fe-vacancy-ordered K0.8Fe1.6Se2\mathrm{K_{0.8}Fe_{1.6}Se_2}, an unusual change of orbital character is found across the one-Fe Brillouin zone upon unfolding the first-principles band structure and Fermi surfaces, suggesting that covering a larger one-Fe Brillouin zone is necessary in experiments. Most significantly, the electron pockets (critical to the magnetism and superconductivity) are found only created with the broken symmetry, advocating strongly its full inclusion in future studies, particularly on the debated nodal structures of the superconducting order parameter.Comment: Accepted by Physical Review Letters.     Sensor Fabrication Method for in Situ Temperature and Humidity Monitoring of Light Emitting Diodes

    In this work micro temperature and humidity sensors are fabricated to measure the junction temperature and humidity of light emitting diodes (LED). The junction temperature is frequently measured using thermal resistance measurement technology. The weakness of this method is that the timing of data capture is not regulated by any standard. This investigation develops a device that can stably and continually measure temperature and humidity. The device is light-weight and can monitor junction temperature and humidity in real time. Using micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), this study minimizes the size of the micro temperature and humidity sensors, which are constructed on a stainless steel foil substrate (40 μm-thick SS-304). The micro temperature and humidity sensors can be fixed between the LED chip and frame. The sensitivities of the micro temperature and humidity sensors are 0.06 ± 0.005 (Ω/°C) and 0.033 pF/%RH, respectively

    Comparison of the mismatch-specific endonuclease method and denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography for the identification of HBB gene mutations

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Beta-thalassemia is a common autosomal recessive hereditary disease in the Meditertanean, Asia and African areas. Over 600 mutations have been described in the beta-globin (<it>HBB</it>), of which more than 200 are associated with a beta-thalassemia phenotype.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We used two highly-specific mutation screening methods, mismatch-specific endonuclease and denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography, to identify mutations in the <it>HBB </it>gene. The sensitivity and specificity of these two methods were compared. We successfully distinguished mutations in the <it>HBB </it>gene by the mismatch-specific endonuclease method without need for further assay. This technique had 100% sensitivity and specificity for the study sample.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Compared to the DHPLC approach, the mismatch-specific endonuclease method allows mutational screening of a large number of samples because of its speed, sensitivity and adaptability to semi-automated systems. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of using the mismatch-specific endonuclease method as a tool for mutation screening.</p

    Clinical Evaluation of Acupuncture as Treatment for Complications of Cerebrovascular Accidents: A Randomized, Sham-Controlled, Subject- and Assessor-Blind Trial

    Background and Purpose. The effect of acupuncture as treatment for poststroke complications is questionable. We performed a randomized, sham-controlled double-blind study to investigate it. Methods. Patients with first-time acute stroke were randomized to receive 24 sessions of either real or sham acupuncture during an eight-week period. The primary outcome measure was change in National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score. Secondary outcome measures included changes in Barthel Index (BI), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D), and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain scores. Results. Of the 52 patients who were randomized to receive acupuncture (n=28) or placebo (n=24), 10 patients in the acupuncture group and 9 patients in the placebo group failed to complete the treatment. In total, 18 patients in the acupuncture group and 15 patients in the control group completed the treatment course. Reduction in pain was significantly greater in the acupuncture group than in the control group (p value = 0.04). There were no significant differences in the other measures between the two groups. Conclusions. Acupuncture provided more effective poststroke pain relief than sham acupuncture treatment. However, acupuncture had no better effect on neurological, functional, and psychological improvement
