    Commercial Building Facade Design: Improving the Consistency of Early Design Tool Predictions and Detailed Design Tool Calculations

    The focus of this research is the concept of the 'Performance Sketch' tool. This is to use detailed simulation software to calculate (plausible) energy performance of designs quickly. Analogous to the Architectural Sketch the Performance Sketch uses high quality tools (detailed simulation) to create an accurate, but simple representation of the essential properties of a building, as opposed to a detailed representation. The aim of this research is to assess the consistency between the predictions produced by performance sketch design tools and the calculations produced by detailed design tools. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s (LBNL) computer software COMFEN (COMmercial FENestration) is a performance sketch tool. It makes the power of the complex detailed design simulation package EnergyPlus available in the very early stages of the design process. It uses a single zone, single external façade EnergyPlus model to explore the costs and benefits of alternate façade designs. The hypothesis tested is that the COMFEN (single-zone) energy performance calculation method is plausible for early design analyses. It evaluates the performance sketch approach from three different points of view: first, COMFEN was introduced to various practitioners in the building industry to gather use-case feedback on the performance sketch approach. A list of specifications for performance sketch design tools was developed based on these use-cases. Second, it examines whether the optimum façade identified by COMFEN creates the optimum performance complex building when this optimum façade is incorporated into detailed building models. Finally, refinements of the nature of the performance sketch based on this use-case feedback were tested in EnergyPlus. The thesis concludes by drawing together these three threads into an outline of a practitioner-based definition of an ideal performance sketch which has been tested in practical application

    Twin Pregnancy with Gastroschisis in Both Twins

    SUMMARYObjectiveGastroschisis is a congenital malformation characterized by an abdominal wall defect located laterally to a normal umbilicus. The cause of gastroschisis is unknown, but most authors consider it exogenous. We describe the case of a woman with a twin pregnancy in which both twins had gastroschisis.Case ReportA 17-year-old primiparous female was referred to our institution because of a twin pregnancy, with one twin diagnosed with gastroschisis at 34 weeks of gestation. Unfortunately, gastroschisis was noted in both twins, but no other anomalies were observed under level II sonographic evaluation. The twins were delivered by cesarean section at 36+weeks of gestation because of preterm labor and breech presentation of one fetus. Both twins presented with a 3-cm abdominal wall defect located to the right side of the umbilicus and a large portion of the bowel protruding that was not covered by membrane. Histopathology of the placenta revealed that the twins were diamniotic monochorionic. Chromosomal analysis of cord blood showed normal karyotype (46, XX) in both newborns.ConclusionThe cause of gastroschisis is unknown, although possible exogenous causes have been studied. The diagnosis of gastroschisis in twin pregnancy is always in late gestation. Therefore, maternal serum alpha feto-protein screening and a detailed prenatal ultrasound evaluation are recommended in multifetal pregnancies

    Cytotoxicity in the Age of Nano: The Role of Fourth Period Transition Metal Oxide Nanoparticle Physicochemical Properties

    A clear understanding of physicochemical factors governing nanoparticle toxicity is still in its infancy. We used a systematic approach to delineate physicochemical properties of nanoparticles that govern cytotoxicity. The cytotoxicity of fourth period metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs): TiO2, Cr2O3, Mn2O3, Fe2O3, NiO, CuO, and ZnO increases with the atomic number of the transition metal oxide. This trend was not cell-type specific, as observed in non-transformed human lung cells (BEAS-2B) and human bronchoalveolar carcinoma-derived cells (A549). Addition of NPs to the cell culture medium did not significantly alter pH. Physiochemical properties were assessed to discover the determinants of cytotoxicity: (1) point-of-zero charge (PZC) (i.e., isoelectric point) described the surface charge of NPs in cytosolic and lysosomal compartments; (2) relative number of available binding sites on the NP surface quantified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to estimate the probability of biomolecular interactions on the particle surface; (3) band-gap energy measurements to predict electron abstraction from NPs which might lead to oxidative stress and subsequent cell death; and (4) ion dissolution. Our results indicate that cytotoxicity is a function of particle surface charge, the relative number of available surface binding sites, and metal ion dissolution from NPs. These findings provide a physicochemical basis for both risk assessment and the design of safer nanomaterials

    Comparison of significance level at the true location using two linkage approaches: LODPAL and GENEFINDER

    BACKGROUND: We compare two new software packages for linkage analysis, LODPAL and GENEFINDER. Both allow for covariate adjustment. Replicates 1 to 3 of Genetic Analysis Workshop 13 simulated data sets were used for the analyses. We described the results of searching for evidence of loci contributing to a simulated quantitative trait related to systolic blood pressure (SBP). Individuals with SBP greater than 130 mm Hg were defined as affected individuals, and all others as unaffected. Total cholesterol was treated as a covariate. RESULTS: Using LODPAL, the power of detecting one of the three major genes related to SBP is 44.4% when a LOD score of 1 is used as the cut-off point. The power of GENEFINDER is lower than that of LODPAL. It is 22.2%. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the limited comparison, LODPAL provided the more reasonable power to detect linkage compared to GENEFINDER. After adjusting for the total cholesterol covariate, the current version of both programs appeared to give a high number of false positives

    Thermal-Aware Test Schedule and TAM Co-Optimization for Three-Dimensional IC

    [[abstract]]Testing is regarded as one of the most difficult challenges for three-dimensional integrated circuits (3D ICs). In this paper, we want to optimize the cost of TAM (test access mechanism) and the test time for 3D IC. We used both greedy and simulated annealing algorithms to solve this optimization problem. We compare the results of two assumptions: soft-die mode and hard-die mode. The former assumes that the DfT of dies cannot be changed, while the latter assumes that the DfT of dies can be adjusted. The results show that thermal-aware cooptimization is essential to decide the optimal TAM and test schedule. Blindly adding TAM cannot reduce the total test cost due to temperature constraints. Another conclusion is that soft-die mode is more effective than hard-die mode to reduce the total test cost for 3D IC.[[notice]]補正完畢[[booktype]]電子

    Decoupled Contrastive Learning

    Contrastive learning (CL) is one of the most successful paradigms for self-supervised learning (SSL). In a principled way, it considers two augmented "views" of the same image as positive to be pulled closer, and all other images as negative to be pushed further apart. However, behind the impressive success of CL-based techniques, their formulation often relies on heavy-computation settings, including large sample batches, extensive training epochs, etc. We are thus motivated to tackle these issues and establish a simple, efficient, yet competitive baseline of contrastive learning. Specifically, we identify, from theoretical and empirical studies, a noticeable negative-positive-coupling (NPC) effect in the widely used InfoNCE loss, leading to unsuitable learning efficiency concerning the batch size. By removing the NPC effect, we propose decoupled contrastive learning (DCL) loss, which removes the positive term from the denominator and significantly improves the learning efficiency. DCL achieves competitive performance with less sensitivity to sub-optimal hyperparameters, requiring neither large batches in SimCLR, momentum encoding in MoCo, or large epochs. We demonstrate with various benchmarks while manifesting robustness as much less sensitive to suboptimal hyperparameters. Notably, SimCLR with DCL achieves 68.2% ImageNet-1K top-1 accuracy using batch size 256 within 200 epochs pre-training, outperforming its SimCLR baseline by 6.4%. Further, DCL can be combined with the SOTA contrastive learning method, NNCLR, to achieve 72.3% ImageNet-1K top-1 accuracy with 512 batch size in 400 epochs, which represents a new SOTA in contrastive learning.     Change in insulin resistance according to virological response during antiviral treatment for hepatitis C virus infection

    SummaryBackgroundHepatitis C virus (HCV) infection can lead to increased insulin resistance, but the dynamics of insulin resistance in HCV-infected patients receiving pegylated interferon plus ribavirin remain elusive.MethodsThis prospective study enrolled HCV-infected patients who received pegylated interferon plus ribavirin. Patients were classified according to the attainment of sustained virological response (SVR). Insulin resistance was measured using homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). The change in HOMA-IR at baseline, the end of treatment, and 24 weeks after the end of treatment was compared in patients who achieved SVR and those who did not.ResultsA total of 65 patients participated in this study, of which 46 (71%) achieved SVR. Overall, The HOMA-IR changed significantly during antiviral therapy, with the median values [interquartile range (IQR)] of 3.7 (1.6–10.0) prior to the treatment, 1.5 (0.8–2.9) at the end, and 1.6 (0.9–3.1) at 24 weeks after completion of therapy. However, only patients who achieved SVR had significant off-therapy reduction of HOMA-IR, with median values of 1.3 (IQR, 0.7–2.6) at 24 weeks off therapy and 3.6 (IQR, 1.5–9.9) at baseline (p < 0.0001). In those without SVR, the HOMA-IR measured 24 weeks after treatment completion (median, 2.2; IQR, 1.9–4.7) did not differ from baseline values (median, 3.9; IQR, 2.2–10.0; p = 0.5).ConclusionDual therapy with pegylated interferon plus ribavirin ameliorated IR in HCV-infected patients, but the off-therapy improvement of IR was limited to those who attained SVR

    Identification of essential histidine residues in a recombinant alpha-amylase of thermophilic and alkaliphilic Bacillus sp strain TS-23

    To understand the structure-function relationships of a truncated Bacillus sp. strain TS-23 alpha-amylase, each of His-137, His-191, His-239, His-269, His-305, His-323, His-361, His-436, and His-475 was replaced with leucine. The molecular masses of the purified wild-type and mutant enzymes were approximately 54 kDa. The specific activity of His323Leu and His436Leu was decreased by more than 52%, while His239Leu, His305Leu, and His475Leu showed activity similar to that of the wild-type enzyme. As compared with the wild-type enzyme, His323Leu and His436Leu exhibited a 62% decrease in the value of k(cat)/K-m. Alterations in His-191, His-239, His-305, and His-475 did not cause a significant change in the K-m or k(cat) values. At 70degreesC, a decreased half-life was observed in His436Leu. These results indicate that His-137, His-269, and His-361 of Bacillus sp. strain TS-23 alpha-amylase are important for proper catalytic activity and that His-436 may contribute to the thermostability of the enzyme

    Juvenile Dermatomyositis: A 20-year Retrospective Analysis of Treatment and Clinical Outcomes

    BackgroundJuvenile dermatomyositis is a rare childhood multisystem autoimmune disease involving primarily the skin and muscles, and it may lead to long-term disability. This study aimed to describe the clinical course of juvenile dermatomyositis and determine if any early clinical or laboratory features could predict outcome.MethodsMedical charts of patients aged ≤18 years and diagnosed with juvenile dermatomyositis (according to the criteria of Bohan and Peter) at the Pediatric Department, National Taiwan University Hospital, between 1989 and 2009 were reviewed. The endpoints for disease assessment were complete clinical response and complete clinical remission. Cox's proportional hazards model was fitted to identify important predictors of complete clinical remission.ResultsA total of 39 patients with juvenile dermatomyositis were reviewed. Two-thirds were females, and the mean age at disease onset was 81.97 ± 46.63 months. The most common initial presentations were Gottron's papule (82.1%) and muscle weakness (82.1%). After excluding one patient with an incomplete record, the remaining 31 patients who had muscle weakness were analyzed; among them, 22 (70.97%) achieved complete clinical response, but only six (19.4%) achieved complete clinical remission. Multivariate analysis showed that female sex, negative Gowers' sign at disease onset, and positive photosensitivity at disease onset were favorable factors to achieve complete clinical remission. Moreover, covariate-adjusted survival curves were drawn for making predictions of complete clinical remission. Only 13 (33.33%) patients were symptom free at the end of follow up, whereas the other 26 suffered from different kinds of complications. None of them developed malignancy, but two (5.13%) patients died during the follow-up period.ConclusionFactors such as male sex and Gowers' sign were unlikely to favor the achievement of complete clinical remission in juvenile dermatomyositis. Certain complications cannot be avoided, and thus more effective treatments and monitoring strategies are needed for better control of juvenile dermatomyositis
