    Atomic ionization by sterile-to-active neutrino conversion and constraints on dark matter sterile neutrinos with germanium detectors

    The transition magnetic moment of a sterile-to-active neutrino conversion gives rise to not only radiative decay of a sterile neutrino, but also its non-standard interaction (NSI) with matter. For sterile neutrinos of keV-mass as dark matter candidates, their decay signals are actively searched for in cosmic X-ray spectra. In this work, we consider the NSI that leads to atomic ionization, which can be detected by direct dark matter experiments. It is found that this inelastic scattering process for a nonrelativistic sterile neutrino has a pronounced enhancement in the differential cross section at energy transfer about half of its mass, manifesting experimentally as peaks in the measurable energy spectra. The enhancement effects gradually smear out as the sterile neutrino becomes relativistic. Using data taken with germanium detectors that have fine energy resolution in keV and sub-keV regimes, constraints on sterile neutrino mass and its transition magnetic moment are derived and compared with those from astrophysical observations

    Estimation of life expectancy and healthcare cost in rheumatoid arthritis patients with and without depression: a population-based retrospective cohort study

    PurposeThis study aimed to estimate the lifetime healthcare costs and loss of life expectancy (loss-of-LE) among patients with incident rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with and without depression.MethodsThis 18 years longitudinal cohort study used data from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database. In total, 43,311 patients with RA were included. Among them, 1,663 patients had depressive disorders in the year preceding the RA diagnosis. The survival function for patients with RA with or without depression was estimated and extrapolated over a lifetime using the rolling extrapolation algorithm. The loss-of-LE was calculated by comparing the sex, age, and calendar year-matched referents from vital statistics. The average monthly cost was calculated as the sum of the monthly costs for all patients divided by the number of surviving patients. Lifetime healthcare costs were estimated by multiplying the monthly average cost by the monthly survival probability.ResultsThe loss-of-LE for RA patients with and without depression was 5.60 years and 4.76 years, respectively. The lifetime costs of RA patients with and without depression were USD90,346andUSD 90,346 and USD 92,239, respectively. However, the annual healthcare costs were USD4,123forRApatientswithdepressionandUSD 4,123 for RA patients with depression and USD 3,812 for RA patients without depression. Regardless of sex or age, RA patients with depression had higher annual healthcare costs than those without depression.ConclusionPatients with RA and depression have a high loss-of-LE and high annual healthcare costs. Whether treating depression prolongs life expectancy and reduces healthcare costs warrants further investigation

    Deep ploughing localized services; expanding international horizons : Collaborative English Teaching Service-Learning Program between Minghsin University of Science and Technology and primary & junior high schools

    On the basis of our experience in promoting localized service-learning programs over the past 6 years, our school, in collaboration with local primary and junior high schools, planned a Cooperative Service Learning Program with an emphasis on reflection and reciprocity in service learning. This Program was implemented in coordination with a Service-Learning Program (named Professional Ethics) initiated by the Department of Applied Foreign Languages of our school. In practice, college students are dispatched to primary and junior high schools to teach their students English and lead the primary and junior high school students to establish a campus English catchphrases environment. In the meantime, through structured reflective activities, this Program allows both college students and primary and junior high school students to benefit from service learning. The results of this Program include: 1) shared and handed over the experience and resources of colleges and universities in promoting service-learning to primary and junior high schools so as to push ahead the deep ploughing and sustainability of service learning in the local communities; 2) achieved the goal of mutual benefit between service providers and service receivers and assisted in improving the problem of lack of international education resources in remote villages in Hsinchu County so as to realize the spirit of social justice that is emphasized in the concept of service learning; 3) planned diversified and structured service-learning reflective activities for different target groups to allow both college students and primary & junior high school students to grow in actual service -learning experience in order to cultivate students’ awareness of social care and civic engagement and inspire students to agree with the concept of service learning so as to make a commitment to turn it into their personal value; 4) organized service-learning teacher training activities to cultivate service-learning seed teachers in primary and junior high schools so as to establish a localized service-learning network and build up a transformative service-learning partnership with local primary and junior high schools

    Ileocecal Burkitt's Lymphoma Presenting as Ileocolic Intussusception With Appendiceal Invagination and Acute Appendicitis

    Intussusception is a common cause of abdominal pain in children. Although most cases are idiopathic, about 10% of cases have a pathologic lead point. Burkitt's lymphoma is not a common etiology. Burkitt's lymphoma might present primarily as intussusception in children but has rarely been associated with appendicitis. We report a case in which a 10-year-old obese boy who initially presented with acute appendicitis due to ileocolic intussusception with appendiceal invagination. He underwent one-trocar laparoscopy and antibiotic treatment. The symptoms recurred 10 days after discharge. Colonoscopy disclosed ileocecal Burkitt's lymphoma as the pathological lead point. This case emphasizes the importance of the age of the patient and the anatomic location of the intussusception related to possible etiology, and hence the most appropriate surgical procedure

    Prenatal diagnosis and molecular cytogenetic characterization of de novo partial monosomy 3p (3p26.3→pter) and partial trisomy 16q (16q23.1→qter)

    AbstractObjectiveTo present the prenatal diagnosis and molecular cytogenetic characterization of a de novo unbalanced reciprocal translocation.Case ReportA 37-year-old woman, G3P1, underwent amniocentesis at 17 weeks of gestation because of her advanced maternal age. Her husband was 38 years old. Amniocentesis revealed a derivative chromosome 3 with the deletion of terminal 3p and the addendum of an unknown extra chromosomal segment on the distal 3p. The parental karyotypes were normal. Prenatal ultrasound findings were unremarkable. Array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) analysis using cultured amniocytes revealed a 2.38-Mb deletion in 3p26.3 [arr 3p26.3 (1-2,380,760)Ă—1] encompassing 15 genes, which included 3 OMIM genes CHL1, CNTN6, and CNTN4, and a 13.17-Mb duplication in 16q23.1-q24.3 [arr 16q23.1q24.3 (76,999,082-90,170,596)Ă—3] encompassing 207 genes, which included 81 OMIM genes. The pregnancy was subsequently terminated, and a malformed fetus was delivered with facial dysmorphism. Postnatal cord blood analysis revealed a karyotype of 46,XY,der(3)t(3;16)(p26.3;q23.1)dn. Polymorphic DNA marker analysis by quantitative fluorescent polymerase chain reaction (QF-PCR) on the DNAs extracted from the placenta and parental blood showed a paternal origin of the aberrant chromosome.ConclusionThe aCGH and QF-PCR analyses helped in delineating the genomic imbalance and parental origin of prenatally detected de novo unbalanced reciprocal translocation

    This research has been done to make a supplement for physics learning about light electromagnetic wave as a particle using virtual laboratory. The population of this research was the second year science-students at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Metro. This development is begun by needs analysis, then identification of resource which is the background of this developmental research. The next step is, identifying the product specification then developing products which contained a tutorial book for teacher and a work sheet for student (LKS). The material and design expert test result is that those products were approved. The external test resulted by users show that the LKS was attractive, very easy to use, and useful. It also was effective to be used as a learning resource because 80% of students reached the passing grade.Telah dilakukan penelitian untuk mengembangkan suplemen pembelajaran fisika gelombang elektromagnetik cahaya sebagai partikel dengan memanfaatkan virtual laboratorium. Populasi penelitian pengembangan ini adalah siswa kelas XI IPA di SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Metro. Pengembangan ini diawali dengan analisis kebutuhan, kemudian identifikasi sumber daya yang melatar belakangi pengembangan. Langkah selanjutnya identifikasi spesifikasi produk yang dilanjutkan dengan mengembangkan produk berupa LKS untuk siswa dan buku panduan untuk guru. Hasil uji internal oleh ahli materi dan ahli desain menyatakan produk yang dikembangkan layak digunakan sebagai media pembelajaran. Hasil uji eksternal oleh pengguna menunjukkan kualitas media pembelajaran menarik, sangat mudah digunakan, dan bermanfaat serta efektif digunakan sebagai media pembelajaran dengan presentase hasil belajar sebesar 80% siswa telah memenuhi KKM
