Analysis of Fluid Queues Using Level Crossing Methods ID: 11563

This dissertation is concerned with the application of the level crossing method on fluid queues driven by a background process. The basic assumption of the fluid queue in this thesis is that during the busy period of the driving process, the fluid content fills at net rate r_1, and during the idle period of the driving process, the fluid content, if positive-valued, empties at a rate r_2. Moreover, nonempty fluid content, leaks continuously at a rate r_2. The fluid models considered are: the fluid queue driven by an M/G/1 queue in Chapter 2, the fluid queue driven by an M/G/1 queue with net input and leaking rate depending on fluid level, and type of arrivals in the driving M/G/1 queue, in chapter 3, and the fluid queue driven by an M/G/1 queue with upward fluid jumps in Chapter 4. In addition, a triangle diagram has been introduced in this thesis as a technique to visualize the proportion of time that the content of the fluid queue is increasing or decreasing during nonempty cycles. Finally, we provide several examples on how the probability density function of the fluid level is related to the probability density function of the waiting time of M/G/1 queues with different disciplines

Looking back to look forward: Setting future research agenda for international business in textiles and clothing industry

© 2019 Jungseok Research Institute of International Logistics and Trade All rights reserved. Since its development by Tinbergen (1962), the gravity model of international trade has widely been applied to analyse the effect of various factors on trade relationships between countries. Past studies on trade gravity vary not only in the mix of model variables but also in how they have come into the analysis. This study reviews existing literature on bilateral trade with an aim to identify influential predictors such as changes of trade policy and national development strategy and highlight important yet understudied factors such as transport and logistics infrastructure, and sustainable development. To demonstrate the needs to examine these critical factors across industry sectors, the study presents the case of textiles and clothing (T&C) production and trade between China and its trading partners as an illustration. Through the literature review, it shows how the gravity model can be applied to address current issues in international trade arena such as the potential trade war between the US and China, China\u27s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and other important factors shaping global T&C trade. This study offers future research directions for analysis of global trade in the T&C industry and contributes to the wider literature of international business and trade

Perceived Importance of Portfolios in a Smart CV after an Education Reform: An Empirical Analysis

Recent developments in recruitment processes have demonstrated that job applicants are increasingly using online Smart CVs instead of traditional approaches like hardcopy or emailing CVs. This study aims at examining perceived importance university undergraduate students of Hong Kong place or put on portfolios of Smart CVs, such as internship experience, exchange experience, scholarships & awards, participation in competitions, academic performance, and extra-curricular activities when building a Smart CV, and on investigating potential effects of the 3+3+4 academic reform in Hong Kong and admission mode. Participants were 256 undergraduate students in BBA majoring either in Information Management or in Electronic Commerce. A survey consisting of 44 items, which measured perceptions on the importance of the 6 proposed portfolios of Smart CVs, was used to collect data. Principal component analysis was used to analyze the items and 34 items were included in the final factor structure out of which 27 items got retained after subsequent reliability analysis. The 6 portfolios were positively inter-correlated. Students who were admitted under the new 4-year undergraduate curriculum using examination results of the new Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) perceived internship experience and participation in competitions as more important in their Smart CVs, which was not the case with those who were admitted under the 3-year undergraduate curriculum using the results of the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE), which is no longer in use since 2012. The admission routes of students did not affect perceived importance in a Smart CV of the 6 proposed portfolios

Gaussian process machine learning-based surface extrapolation method for improvement of the edge effect in surface filtering

Filtering for signal and data is an important technology to reduce and/or remove noise signal for further extraction of desired information. However, it is well known that significant distortions may occur in the boundary areas of the filtered data because there is no sufficient data to be processed. This drawback largely affects the accuracy of topographic measurements and characterizations of precision freeform surfaces, such as freeform optics. To address this issue, a Gaussian process machine learning-based method is presented for extrapolation of the measured surface to an extended measurement area with high accuracy prior to filtering the surface. With the extrapolated data, the edge distortion can be effectively reduced. The effectiveness of this method was evaluated using both simulated and experimental data. Successful implementation of the proposed method not only addresses the issue in surface filtering but also provides a promising solution for numerous applications involving filtering processes
