Acute kidney injury in the elderly: predisposition to chronic kidney disease and vice versa.
There have been considerable advances in the past few years in our understanding of how chronic kidney disease (CKD) predisposes to acute kidney injury (AKI) and vice versa. This review shows, however, that few studies have focused on the elderly or conducted stratified analysis by age. It does appear that elderly patients with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) 45-59 ml/min/1.73 m(2) are at higher risk for AKI compared with their counterparts with eGFR >60 ml/min/1.73 m(2). This is a similar relationship to that seen in younger patients, although effect size appears smaller. As the incidence of AKI has been increasing over the past several years, the proportion of elderly patients surviving after AKI has also been increasing. Since AKI heightens the risk for the development and acceleration of CKD, this implies significant public health concerns with regard to the absolute number of elderly persons developing incident CKD
Do Stand-Biased Desks in the Classroom Change School-Time Activity and Sedentary Behavior?
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of stand-biased desks on the physical activity and sedentary behavior of third, fourth and sixth grade students across the school year. Methods: This within classroom crossover design study used teacher-determined allocation for seating within each classroom. Half of the students used a stand-biased desk and half used a sitting desk. Five-day hip-worn accelerometer assessments were completed at baseline and at the end of each nine-week intervention period. A mixed effects model was used to determine the differences in the percentage of time spent active and sedentary. Results: A total of 22, 36 and 41 students in 3rd, 4th and 6th grades, respectively, completed this study (57.1% male, 79.3% White). Regardless of the desk type, students became more sedentary (p \u3c 0.001) and less active (p \u3c 0.001) in the classroom as the school year progressed. After controlling for baseline activity, there was a significant interaction between the type of desk and time (p = 0.029). Students who spent a higher percentage of their classroom time sedentary engaged in less sedentary behavior when using a stand-biased desk compared to the traditional desk. Conclusion: The standing desk intervention was effective in mitigating the increase in sedentary behavior for those who started the school year more sedentary
Stronger computational modelling of signalling pathways using both continuous and discrete-state methods
Starting from a biochemical signalling pathway model expresses in a process algebra enriched with quantitative information, we automatically derive both continuous-space and discrete-space representations suitable for numerical evaluation. We compare results obtained using approximate stochastic simulation thereby exposing a flaw in the use of the differentiation procedure producing misleading results
Corrections to Chiral Dynamics of Heavy Hadrons: (I) 1/M Correction
In earlier publications we have analyzed the strong and radiative decays of
heavy hadrons in a formalism which incorporates both heavy-quark and chiral
symmetries. In particular, we have derived a heavy-hadron chiral Lagrangian
whose coupling constants are related by the heavy-quark flavor-spin symmetry
arising from the QCD Lagrangian with infinitely massive quarks. In this paper,
we re-examine the structure of the above chiral Lagrangian by including the
effects of corrections in the heavy quark effective theory. The
relations among the coupling constants, originally derived in the heavy-quark
limit, are modified by heavy quark symmetry breaking interactions in QCD. Some
of the implications are discussed.Comment: PHYZZX, 45 pages, 1 figure (not included), CLNS 93/1192,

Effective Lagrangian Approach to Weak Radiative Decays of Heavy Hadrons
Motivated by the observation of the decay by
CLEO, we have systematically analyzed the two-body weak radiative decays of
bottom and charmed hadrons. There exist two types of weak radiative decays: One
proceeds through the short-distance transition and the other
occurs through -exchange accompanied by a photon emission. Effective
Lagrangians are derived for the -exchange bremsstrahlung processes at the
quark level and then applied to various weak electromagnetic decays of heavy
hadrons. Predictions for the branching ratios of and
\Xi_b^0\to\xip_c^0\gamma are given. In particular, we found . Order of magnitude
estimates for the weak radiative decays of charmed hadrons: and
are also presented. Within this approach, the decay asymmetry for antitriplet
to antitriplet heavy baryon weak radiative transitions is uniquely predicted by
heavy quark symmetry. The electromagnetic penguin contribution to
is estimated by two different methods and its
branching ratio is found to be of order . We conclude that
weak radiative decays of bottom hadrons are dominated by the short-distance
mechanism.Comment: 28 pages + 3 figures (not included), CLNS 94/1278, IP-ASTP-04-94.
