Confocal microscopic analysis of optical crosstalk in GaN micro-pixel light-emitting diodes
© 2015 AIP Publishing LLC. The optical crosstalk phenomenon in GaN micro-pixel light-emitting diodes (LED) has been investigated by confocal microscopy. Depth-resolved confocal emission images indicate light channeling along the GaN and sapphire layers as the source of crosstalk. Thin-film micro-pixel devices are proposed, whereby the light-trapping sapphire layers are removed by laser lift-off. Optical crosstalk is significantly reduced but not eliminated due to the remaining GaN layer. Another design involving micro-pixels which are completely isolated is further proposed; such devices exhibited low-noise and enhanced optical performances, which are important attributes for high-density micro-pixel LED applications including micro-displays and multi-channel optical communications.published_or_final_versio

Nonperturbative Determination of Heavy Meson Bound States
In this paper we obtain a heavy meson bound state equation from the heavy
quark equation of motion in heavy quark effective theory (HQET) and the heavy
meson effective field theory we developed very recently. The bound state
equation is a covariant extention of the light-front bound state equation for
heavy mesons derived from light-front QCD and HQET. We determine the covariant
heavy meson wave function variationally by minimizing the binding energy

Persistent Current of Free Electrons in the Plane
Predictions of Akkermans et al. are essentially changed when the Krein
spectral displacement operator is regularized by means of zeta function.

Laser surface colouring of titanium for contemporary jewellery
This paper describes work which emerged through a need to understand more about the potential of laser surface engineering for use in the creative industries. The method of creation of contemporary jewellery pieces and the resultant 'Ocular' jewellery series are described from the creative point of view. The work demonstrates how laser controlled oxide growth on Tiâ6Alâ4V alloy under ambient conditions can be used as an artistic tool by producing precisely defined colours. Use of the method to produce regular areas of even colour and to reproduce freehand drawings on a titanium alloy surface is described. Analysis highlights interference as the main colouring mechanism and suggests a graded surface layer, progressing from an outer layer of TiO2 to lower layers rich in TiO and Ti2O. The model of research by practice presented in this paper offers a contribution to the current debate on partnerships between art and science and engineering
Composite Skyrme Model with Vector Mesons
We study the composite Skyrme model, proposed by Cheung and G\"{u}rsey,
introducing vector mesons in a chiral Lagrangian. We calculate the static
properties of baryons and compare with results obtained from models without

Patterns of antihypertensive prescribing, discontinuation and switching among a Hong Kong Chinese population from over one million prescriptions
Hypertension is an alarming public health problem among Chinese. The present study evaluated the prescribing patterns, discontinuation and switching profiles of antihypertensive agents and their associated factors in one Hong Kong Chinese population. Data were retrieved from computerized records for patients prescribed anti-hypertensive agents in government primary care clinics of Hong Kong from January, 2004 to June, 2007. A total of 1,069,836 antihypertensive drug visits, representing 67,028 patients, were analyzed. The most commonly prescribed drugs were Calcium Channel Blockers (CCBs) (49%), b-Blockers (BBs) (46%) and Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors (ACEIs) (19%). Thiazide diuretic prescribing was low (13%) and on the decline (14% in 2004 to 12% in 2007). Prescribing of ACEIs was rising (16% in 2004 to 23% in 2007). Patientsâ age, gender, and socio-economic status were independent predictors of class of anti-hypertensive prescribed but explained less than 3.5% of the variation observed. Drug discontinuation was highest for BBs (21%) and lowest for CCBs (12%). The high rates of discontinuation in BBs remained apparent after controlling for confounding variables. Switching was less common than discontinuation and was most likely with thiazide diuretics. To summarize, prescribing of CCBs and BBs were high and that of thiazide diuretics particularly low in this Chinese population when compared with international trends. CCBs may be a particularly favorable antihypertensive treatment in Chinese, given the high discontinuation rates of BBs and international guidelines advising against the use of BBs as first-line therapy. The low use of thiazide diuretics warrants further clinical and cost effectiveness studies among Chinese
Discovery of Gamma-ray Pulsations from the Transitional Redback PSR J1227-4853
The 1.69 ms spin period of PSR J1227-4853 was recently discovered in radio
observations of the low-mass X-ray binary XSS J12270-4859 following the
announcement of a possible transition to a rotation-powered millisecond pulsar
state, inferred from decreases in optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray flux from the
source. We report the detection of significant (5) gamma-ray pulsations
after the transition, at the known spin period, using ~1 year of data from the
Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The
gamma-ray light curve of PSR J1227-4853 can be fit by one broad peak, which
occurs at nearly the same phase as the main peak in the 1.4 GHz radio profile.
The partial alignment of light-curve peaks in different wavebands suggests that
at least some of the radio emission may originate at high altitude in the
pulsar magnetosphere, in extended regions co-located with the gamma-ray
emission site. We folded the LAT data at the orbital period, both pre- and
post-transition, but find no evidence for significant modulation of the
gamma-ray flux. Analysis of the gamma-ray flux over the mission suggests an
approximate transition time of 2012 November 30. Continued study of the pulsed
emission and monitoring of PSR J1227-4853, and other known redback systems, for
subsequent flux changes will increase our knowledge of the pulsar emission
