A simplified model of the source channel of the Leksell Gamma Knife: testing multisource configurations with PENELOPE
A simplification of the source channel geometry of the Leksell Gamma
Knife, recently proposed by the authors and checked for a single
source configuration (Al-Dweri et al 2004), has been used to calculate the dose
distributions along the , and axes in a water phantom with a
diameter of 160~mm, for different configurations of the Gamma Knife including
201, 150 and 102 unplugged sources. The code PENELOPE (v. 2001) has been used
to perform the Monte Carlo simulations. In addition, the output factors for the
14, 8 and 4~mm helmets have been calculated. The results found for the dose
profiles show a qualitatively good agreement with previous ones obtained with
EGS4 and PENELOPE (v. 2000) codes and with the predictions of
GammaPlan. The output factors obtained with our model agree
within the statistical uncertainties with those calculated with the same Monte
Carlo codes and with those measured with different techniques. Owing to the
accuracy of the results obtained and to the reduction in the computational time
with respect to full geometry simulations (larger than a factor 15), this
simplified model opens the possibility to use Monte Carlo tools for planning
purposes in the Gamma Knife.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 5 table

Several 1.0 continuum mapping observations were made of seven southern hemisphere h12/molecular cloud complexes with 65 arcsec resolution. The radial density distribution of the clouds with central luminosity sources was determined observationally. Strong similarities in morphology and general physical conditions were found to exist among all of the southern clouds in the sample
Property Price Modelling: The Regression Model and The Neural Newtwork Model
Hedonic regression models are widely used in housing price studies. However, incorrect identification of the functional relationship may lead to potential bias. This research studies the neural network model in modeling housing price. A neural network model is regarded as a nonlinear regression model without a predetermined functional form. The adoption of the neural network model could overcome the biasness inherent in the hedonic price regression model. The performance of neural network models and hedonic regression models are discussed based on the Hong Kong property price data

What determines the return to bribery? Evidence from corruption cases worldwide
We analyze a hand-collected sample of bribery cases from around the world to describe how the payment of bribes affects shareholder value. The net present value of a bribe conditional on getting caught is close to zero for the median firm in our sample. However, controlling for industry, country, and firm characteristics, a 6-9 increase in the value of the firm, suggesting a correlation between the size of bribes and the size of available benefits. Proxies for information disclosure appear significant in explaining these benefits, with more disclosure associated with lower benefits. However, this result is driven by democratic countries where bribepaying firms receive smaller benefits relative to the bribes they pay. Are Asians comfortable with discussing death in health valuation studies? A study in multi-ethnic Singapore
BACKGROUND
To characterize ease in discussing death (EID) and its influence on health valuation in a multi-ethnic Asian population and to determine the acceptability of various descriptors of death and "pits"/"all-worst" in health valuation.
METHODS
In-depth interviews (English or mother-tongue) among adult Chinese, Malay and Indian Singaporeans selected to represent both genders and a wide range of ages/educational levels. Subjects rated using 0–10 visual analogue scales (VAS): (1) EID, (2) acceptability of 8 descriptors for death, and (3) appropriateness of "pits" and "all-worst" as descriptors for the worst possible health state. Subjects also valued 3 health states using VAS followed by time trade-off (TTO). The influence of sociocultural variables on EID and these descriptors was studied using univariable analyses and multiple linear regression (MLR). The influence of EID on VAS/TTO utilities with adjustment for sociocultural variables was assessed using MLR.
RESULTS
Subjects (n = 63, 35% Chinese, 32% Malay, median age 44 years) were generally comfortable with discussing death (median EID: 8.0). Only education significantly influenced EID (p = 0.045). EID correlated weakly with VAS/TTO scores (range: VAS: -0.23 to 0.07; TTO: -0.14 to 0.11). All subjects felt "passed away", "departed" and "deceased" were most acceptable (median acceptability: 8.0) while "sudden death" and "immediate death" were least acceptable (median acceptability: 5.0). Subjects clearly preferred "all-worst" to "pits" (63% vs. 19%, p < 0.001).
CONCLUSION
Singaporeans were generally comfortable with discussing death and had clear preferences for several descriptors of death and for "all-worst". EID is unlikely to influence health preference measurement in health valuation studies
The Impact of Animated Banner Ads on Online Consumers: A Feature-Level Analysis Using Eye Tracking
Despite the popular use of animated banner ads on websites, extant research on the effects of web animation has generated mixed results. We argue that it is critical to identify feature-level animation characteristics and examine their individual and combined effects on capturing online consumers’ attention across different task conditions. We identify three key animation features (i.e., motion, lagging, and looming) based on three attention theories and investigate their effects on online consumers’ attention and recall across browsing and searching tasks in three laboratory experiments using an eye tracking machine. Experiment 1 found that both motion and looming (animation features) are effective in attracting online consumers’ attention to animated ads when they are performing a browsing task. However, combining a salient feature (e.g., motion) with another salient feature (e.g., looming) does not improve the original attention attraction effect, suggesting a “banner saturation” effect. Further, we found that online consumers’ attention positively affects their recall performance. In Experiment 2, none of the animation features or their interactions had a significant effect when the subjects were performing a searching task, indicating that task is an important boundary condition when applying attention theories. Experiment 3 replicated Experiment 1 in a more realistic context and produced similar results. We conclude the paper by discussing theoretical and practical implications as well as avenues for future research
Dual-band MIMO antenna using double-T structure for WLAN applications
Session - Interactive 2.3: Multi-Band AntennasThe Conference program's website is located at http://www.iwat2014.org/index.php/program/detailed-programA dual-band multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna is proposed for the wireless-local-area-network (WLAN) applications in the 2.4-GHz and 5.2-GHz bands. The antenna consists of two double-T monopole elements with microstrip-fed and symmetrically placed on a substrate. To enhance isolation between the two monopole elements, three slots are cut on the ground plane on the other side of the substrate. The longer slot is used for better isolation in the 2.4-GHz band, while the two shorter slots are used for the 5.2-GHz band. Simulation and measurement are used to study the antenna performance in terms of S parameters, radiation patterns, realized gain, efficiency, and envelope correlation coefficient. Results show that the MIMO antenna has the two operation bands of 2.20-2.75 GHz and 5.09-5.50 GHz with mutual coupling of less than -15 dB and envelope correlation coefficient of less than 0.1, making it a good candidate for WLAN applications.published_or_final_versio
