The time-of-flight system on the Goddard medium energy gamma-ray telescope

    Get PDF
A scintillation counter time of flight system, incorporated into the Goddard 50 cm by 50 cm spark chamber gamma ray telescope is described. The system, which utilizes constant fractions timing and particle position compensation and digitizes up to 10 ns time differences to six bit accuracy in less than 500 ns is analyzed. The performance of this system during balloon flight is discussed

    Victims of Crime: System Navigation

    Get PDF
Santa Cruz Countyā€™s Shared Safety Workgroup, a collaborative chapter of United Way Santa Cruz, is working to better meet the needs of survivors and victims of crime. Due to the complexity of their trauma and the systems they navigate many survivors of crime are experiencing re-victimization. UWSCC attempted to create a comprehensive system mapping process for Santa Cruz Countyā€™s survivor-serving system with the assistance of community agencies. The expected outcome of the system mapping project is to create the first-ever system mapping tech platform that uniquely autogenerates services for survivors of crime while eliminating specific barriers based on their individual needs. This level of system mapping had never been done statewide or nationally which prolonged the completed project. The project shifted to focus on three agencies that helped to develop three infographics used to distribute to survivor-serving agencies to connect survivors of crime to resources and avoid re-victimization

Livestock Bedding Effects on Two Species of Parasitoid Wasps of Filth Flies

    Get PDF
Choice of livestock bedding has been shown to affect density of filth fly maggots. Here, laboratory experiments indicate that bedding type can also affect natural enemies of the flies, specifically the parasitoid wasps Spalangia endius Walker and Urolepis rufipes (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) parasitizing a natural host, the house fly Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae) . For both parasitoid species, when females parasitized hosts under bedding, cedar shavings resulted in fewer parasitoids compared with pine shavings, but pine shavings did not differ from wood pellets and corn cob pellets. In the absence of exposure to hosts, longevity of adult females was reduced in cedar shavings compared with pine shavings and pellets. In contrast to the effects on parasitization and on adult survival, shavings treatment had no significant effect on the number of parasitoids or flies that emerged when hosts were not exposed to shavings until after parasitization

How User Personality and Social Value Orientation Influence Avatar Mediated Friendship

    Get PDF
Purpose ā€“ The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of user personality and vlaues on the number of connections users make, the number of requests for connections that users give out, and the number of connections invitations users receive. Design/methodology/approach ā€“ This is a field study of 179 participants interacting in a novel virtual world. The worldā€™s server logs are used to capture sociometrics about the users and their interaction. Findings ā€“ Findings suggest that personality and values influence the number of friends users make and the number of friendship requests users give out, but not the number of friendship invitations users receive. Only one personality trait ā€“ conscientiousness ā€“ exhibits homophily. Originality/value ā€“ Personality and social value orientation have rarely been studied together in information systems (IS) research, despite research showing the two have an impact on IS relevant constructs. The use of server logs for data capture is novel. Avatar friendship is an under-researched concept in IS

Determinants of Friendship in Social Networking Virtual Worlds

    Get PDF
This paper examines the determinants of friendship between two users in a virtual world who are unaware of each other's real identities. Drawing on theories of homophily, heterophily and propinquity, three virtual world behaviours are analysed: avatar appearance, avatar location, and avatar communication. Data are collected on 179 participants interacting in a novel virtual world. The main results show that: (1) avatars did not tend to form friendships with avatars that are similar in appearance to themselves but did tend to form friendships with avatars that are dressed differently from themselves; (2) in terms of location, the closer an avatar stands to other avatars, the more likely the avatar is to receive a friend invitation; and (3) the fewer words an avatar uses in communication, the more likely the avatar is to receive a friend invitation. This paper contributes to theories of virtual world interaction and to using virtual worlds as a data collection platform

Polyspecies aquaculture systems: The detrital trophic level

    Get PDF
The production of species belonging to the detrital trophic level was investigated in a model-sized aquaculture system, with flowing, filtered seawater and controlled phytoplankton addition to experimental tanks containing the oyster, Crassostrea virginica. The biodeposits of feces and pseudofeces of the oysters supported on the bottom of one tank a population of the nereid polychaete, Nereis virens and in the other tank a mixed community of the capitellid polychaete, Capitella capitata and the amphipod, Corophium sp...

The valuation of clean spread options: linking electricity, emissions and fuels

    Get PDF
The purpose of the paper is to present a new pricing method for clean spread options, and to illustrate its main features on a set of numerical examples produced by a dedicated computer code. The novelty of the approach is embedded in the use of a structural model as opposed to reduced-form models which fail to capture properly the fundamental dependencies between the economic factors entering the production process
