    The complex relationship between classroom emotions and EFL achievement in China

    The present study adopted a mixed-method approach combining principles from Complex Dynamic Systems Theory and Positive Psychology to examine the interaction between Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCA) and Foreign Language Enjoyment (FLE) of 1,307 Chinese students, the single and combined effects of FLCA and FLE on self-perceived English proficiency and actual English achievement, and finally, the effect of EA on FLE and FLCA. Statistical analyses revealed negative correlations between FLCA and FLE in three groups at different levels of English achievement. Qualitative data from 64 participants threw further light on this complex relationship. Second, FLCA was found to be significantly negatively related to self-rated proficiency at all achievement groups while FLE was positively related. Similar significant relationships were also found between two classroom emotions and actual English achievement except in the low achievement group. Finally, qualitative data allowed us to investigate the possible causes for this relationship

    New Self-Expanding Transcatheter Valve for Off-Pump Transatrial Mitral Valve-In-Ring Implantation.

    OBJECTIVES To validate a self-expanding transcatheter valve for off-pump transatrial mitral valve-in-ring (VIR) implantation via a left thoracotomy. METHODS Mitral valve annuloplasty was performed via sternotomy during cardiopulmonary bypass on 9 pigs. After successful weaning from extracorporal circulation, the custom-made, self-expanding transcatheter VIR device was deployed under fluoroscopic guidance within the annuloplasty ring via a left thoracotomy. Hemodynamic data before and after the implantation were recorded. Mitral annulus diameter and valve area were measured by echocardiography. Transvalvular and left-ventricular outflow-tract pressure gradient were measured invasively. RESULTS Eight successful implantations were performed. Implantation failed in 1 pig because of difficulty with technical delivery of the sheath. Mean transatrial procedure time was 12.6 ± 1.7 min. Hemodynamic status during transatrial implantation was stable, and differences were not statistically significant. Mean mitral annulus diameter and mean mitral orifice area were 2.32 ± 0.2 and 3.84 ± 0.55 cm2, respectively. Mild regurgitation was detected in 7 animals and moderate regurgitation in 1. Mean gradients were 6.1 ± 5.0 mm Hg across the device. Postmortem examination confirmed adequate positioning of devices within the annuloplasty ring. CONCLUSIONS This custom-made transcatheter device allows for safe and reproducible off-pump transatrial mitral VIR implantations. Transatrial access is a promising route to facilitate VIR implantations. Our custom-made stent-valve may be suitable for VIR procedures

    Structural Features and Digestibility of Corn Starch With Different Amylose Content

    In this study, the in vitro digestibility of corn starch with different amylose content was determined. The results showed that waxy corn starch (WCS) and corn starch (CS) have the highest digestibility, while high amylose corn starch (HACS) has a higher content of resistant starch (RS). Besides being related to amylose content, RS content is also closely related to particle shape, debranched fine structure, molecular structure, and semi-crystalline structure. HACS can maintain a complete particle structure after gelatinization and enzymolysis; differential scanning calorimetry showed a positive correlation between gelatinization enthalpy and RS content. As the amylose content increased, the content of fa (DP 6–12) decreased, while the content of fb2 (DP 25–36) and fb3 (DP ≄ 37) increased, which in-turn decreased the cluster polymer formed by short branch chains, and the formation of more hydrogen bonds between long chain branches improved starch stability. D, which characterizes the compactness of starch semi-crystalline structure, increased with the increase of RS content. HACS 60 with the highest RS content had a unique surface fractal structure between 7.41 < d (2π/q) < 10.58 nm, indicating that the dense structure is effective in maintaining the RS content

    Depression, also called “depression disorder,” is characterized by a significant and persistent low mood. It has become a major refractory disease in the 21st century. In recent years, Chinese medicine has shown some important clinical value in the treatment of depression. Among them, the Warming and “Tonifying” Kidney-Yang Recipe (WTKYR) has been demonstrated to have obvious effects in the clinical treatments of depression; however, the mechanism remains unclear. This study is based on the adenylyl cyclase (AC)—cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)—protein kinase A (PKA)—cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB)—brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling pathway, aiming to investigate the mechanism of WTKYR. The results showed that WTKYR can upregulate AC-cAMP-PKA-CREB-BDNF in the hippocampus of depression model rats and alleviate its depressive symptoms, which may be the mechanism of WTKYR.</p

    Obtaining and Characterization of an Interspecific Hybrid between <i>Lilium callosum</i> and ‘Snow Queen’ and Evaluation of the <i>Botrytis</i> Stress Response

    To cultivate excellent lily germplasms, an interspecific hybrid (LC×SQ-01) was successfully obtained by using a cut-style pollination method in which the rare wild lily Lilium callosum was used as the female parent and the cut flower L. longiflorum ‘Snow Queen’ was used as the male parent. The morphological features of LC×SQ-01 included height, leaf length, and width, which were observed to be between those of the parents in the tissue-cultured seedlings. The height and leaf length of LC×SQ-01 were more similar to those of the male parent, and the width was between the widths of the parents for field-generated plants. The epidermal cell length and the guard cell and stoma sizes were between those of both parents in tissue-cultured and field-generated plants. In addition, the shapes of the epidermal cells and anticlinal wall in LC×SQ-01 were more analogous to those in the male parent, while the stoma morphology was different from that of both parents. Fourteen pairs of polymorphic SSR primers were identified in both parents, and the validity of LC×SQ-01 was demonstrated by PCR amplification using five pairs of SSR primers. Flow cytometry and root tip squashing assays revealed that LC×SQ-01 was a diploid plant, similar to its parents. Furthermore, the LC×SQ-01 hybrid was more resistant to B. cinerea than its parents, and it also showed much greater peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) activity than the parents.     Tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) is a growing concern and may be a potential risk to marine environmental health due to its widespread usage and distribution. However, the toxic effects of TDCPP on cardiac development in marine fish have not been reported. In this study, Oryzias melastigma embryos were exposed to TDCPP at doses of 0, 0.04, 0.4, 4 and 40 Όg/L from early embryogenesis to 10 days postfertilization (dpf). Then, the heart rate and sinus venosus–bulbus arteriosus (SV–BA) distance of the exposed embryos were measured at 5, 6, 8 and 10 dpf. Furthermore, alterations in the mRNA levels of the genes encoding cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4), fibroblast growth factor 8 (FGF8), and GATA-binding protein 4 (GATA4) were evaluated at 5, 6, 8 and 10 dpf. We found that the heart rate significantly increased in all TDCPP exposure groups at 10 dpf. The SV–BA distance significantly decreased in all TDCPP exposure groups at all developmental stages (except for the 0.4 Όg/L group at 5 dpf and the 4 Όg/L group at 10 dpf). The mRNA expression of COX-2 was downregulated at 5 dpf, BMP4 was downregulated at 5 and 6 dpf, FGF8 was downregulated at 5, 6 and 8 dpf, GATA4 was downregulated at 8 dpf, and GATA4 was upregulated at 10 dpf. These results indicate that the changes in heart rate and SV–BA distance might be accompanied by disturbances in the four genes involved in cardiac development. Our findings will help to illustrate the possible cardiac toxic effects of marine fish exposed to TDCPP
