Positron emission tomography of sodium glucose cotransport activity in high grade astrocytomas.
A novel glucose transporter, the sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2), has been demonstrated to contribute to the demand for glucose by pancreatic and prostate tumors, and its functional activity has been imaged using a SGLT specific PET imaging probe, α-methyl-4-[F-18]fluoro-4-deoxy-D-glucopyaranoside (Me-4FDG). In this study, Me-4FDG PET was extended to evaluate patients with high-grade astrocytic tumors. Me-4FDG PET scans were performed in four patients diagnosed with WHO Grade III or IV astrocytomas and control subjects, and compared with 2-deoxy-2-[F-18]fluoro-D-glucose (2-FDG) PET and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the same subjects. Immunocytochemistry was carried out on Grade IV astrocytomas to determine the cellular location of SGLT proteins within the tumors. Me-4FDG retention was pronounced in astrocytomas in dramatic contrast to the lack of uptake into the normal brain, resulting in a high signal-to-noise ratio. Macroscopically, the distribution of Me-4FDG within the tumors overlapped with that of 2-FDG uptake and tumor definition using contrast-enhanced MRI images. Microscopically, the SGLT2 protein was found to be expressed in neoplastic glioblastoma cells and endothelial cells of the proliferating microvasculature. This preliminary study shows that Me-4FDG is a highly sensitive probe for visualization of high-grade astrocytomas by PET. The distribution of Me-4FDG within tumors overlapped that for 2-FDG, but the absence of background brain Me-4FDG resulted in superior imaging sensitivity. Furthermore, the presence of SGLT2 protein in astrocytoma cells and the proliferating microvasculature may offer a novel therapy using the SGLT2 inhibitors already approved by the FDA to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus
Effect of land use patterns on stability and distributions of organic carbon in the hilly region of Western Sichuan, China
Soil aggregation is important for the resistance of land surfaces to erosion, and it influences the ability of soils to remain productive. At the same time, it is also an important process of carbon sequestration. The objectives of this study were to elucidate the effects of different land use patterns on soil aggregate stability and the distribution of organic carbon in different aggregate fractions in order to prove that the different land use patterns enhance soil aggregate stability. Five kinds of soil samples were collected from the hilly area of western Sichuan under different land use patterns, such as abandoned farmlands, eucalyptus plantations, Chinese fir plantations, tea plantations and loquat orchards. The results demonstrated that the five land use patterns had high proportions of aggregates at the size of >2 mm after dry sieving, and had high proportions of aggregates at the size of < 0.5 mm after wet sieving. The aggregation abilities of the soils were significantly different depending on land use patterns. Waterstable aggregate stability was highest in the Chinese fir plantations, followed by eucalyptus plantations and tea plantations. Water-stable aggregate stability was the lowest in loquat orchards and abandoned farmlands. Except for coarse particle, soil particle contents of the same size were affected according to the different land use patterns. As the size of aggregates decreased, the organic carbon content of the soil aggregates in tea plantations increased after a decrease, and then reduced again. However, the organic carbon contents of soil aggregates in other land uses increased continuously with the decreasing size of aggregates. Organic carbon content of the soil aggregates was strongly increased in land areas that had been converted from abandoned farmland to Chinese fir plantations, tea plantations and loquat orchards, while it was decreased when abandoned farmland was converted to eucalyptus plantations. Seroprevalence of <em>Lawsonia intracellularis</em> antibodies in intensive pig farms in China
BACKGROUND: Porcine proliferative enteropathy caused by Lawsonia intracellularis (L. intracellularis) is a major concern to the pig industry worldwide. Although 8.3 billion pigs are produced each year in China, few reports on the prevalence of L.intracellularis infection are available. The aim of the current study was to estimate the seroprevalence of L. intracellularis antibodies in intensive pig farms in China. RESULTS: A total of 1060 serum samples were collected from 14 commercial pig farms located throughout China. Animals from all age groups were sampled including pre-weaning piglets, weaners, fattening pigs, adult sows and boars. Antibodies against L. intracellularis were detected using a specific blocking ELISA. Of the 1060 serum samples, 602 were identified as positive using the ELISA test. The apparent seroprevalence of L. intracellularis seropositivity was 57% (95% CI 50 to 64%). The true prevalence (that is, prevalence corrected for the imperfect sensitivity and specificity of the testing method) was 77% (95% CI 70 to 83%). CONCLUSIONS: The highest true prevalence was observed in sows and boars, suggesting that within a herd these stock classes are a reservoir for infection. The prevalence of L. intracellularis seropositivity in local breed pigs was significantly less than that in imported breeds. A higher seroprevalence was found in pigs in herds in Central and Northern China, which may correspond to the greater use of the intensive production systems in these areas. We conclude that L. intracellularis is widely prevalent in commercial pigs in China
Central Neurocytoma: A Review of Clinical Management and Histopathologic Features.
Central neurocytoma (CN) is a rare, benign brain tumor often located in the lateral ventricles. CN may cause obstructive hydrocephalus and manifest as signs of increased intracranial pressure. The goal of treatment for CN is a gross total resection (GTR), which often yields excellent prognosis with a very high rate of tumor control and survival. Adjuvant radiosurgery and radiotherapy may be considered to improve tumor control when GTR cannot be achieved. Chemotherapy is also not considered a primary treatment, but has been used as a salvage therapy. The radiological features of CN are indistinguishable from those of other brain tumors; therefore, many histological markers, such as synaptophysin, can be very useful for diagnosing CNs. Furthermore, the MIB-1 Labeling Index seems to be correlated with the prognosis of CN. We also discuss oncogenes associated with these elusive tumors. Further studies may improve our ability to accurately diagnose CNs and to design the optimal treatment regimens for patients with CNs
Pair production of the T-odd leptons at the LHC

) at the Large Hadron Collider . We estimate the hadronic
production cross sections for all of these processes and give a simply
phenomenology analysis. We find that the cross sections for most of the above
processes are very small. However, the value of the cross section for the

Experimental Free-Space Distribution of Entangled Photon Pairs over a Noisy Ground Atmosphere of 13km
We report free-space distribution of entangled photon pairs over a noisy
ground atmosphere of 13km. It is shown that the desired entanglement can still
survive after the two entangled photons have passed through the noisy ground
atmosphere. This is confirmed by observing a space-like separated violation of
Bell inequality of . On this basis, we exploit the distributed
entangled photon source to demonstrate the BB84 quantum cryptography scheme.
The distribution distance of entangled photon pairs achieved in the experiment
is for the first time well beyond the effective thickness of the aerosphere,
hence presenting a significant step towards satellite-based global quantum

Experimental realization of large-alphabet quantum key distribution protocol using orbital angular momentum entanglement
We experimentally demonstrate a quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol using
photon pairs entangled in orbit angular momentum (OAM). In our protocol, Alice
and Bob modulate their OAM states on each entangled pair with spatial light
modulators (SLMs), respectively. Alice uses a fixed phase hologram in her SLM,
while Bob designs different suitable phase holograms and uses them to
represent his -based information in his SLM. With coincidences, Alice can
fully retrieve the key stream sent by Bob without information reconciliation or
privacy amplification. We report the experiment results with N=3 and the sector
states with OAM eigenmodes l=1 and l=-1. Our experiment shows that the
coincidence rates are in relatively distinct value regions for the three
different key elements. Alice could recover fully Bob's keys by the protocol.
Finally, we discuss the security of the protocol both form the light way and
against the general attacks
Discovery of a Novel Prolactin in Non-Mammalian Vertebrates: Evolutionary Perspectives and Its Involvement in Teleost Retina Development
BACKGROUND:The three pituitary hormones, viz. prolactin (PRL), growth hormone (GH) and somatolactin (SL), together with the mammalian placental lactogen (PL), constitute a gene family of hormones with similar gene structure and encoded protein sequences. These hormones are believed to have evolved from a common ancestral gene through several rounds of gene duplication and subsequent divergence. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:In this study, we have identified a new PRL-like gene in non-mammalian vertebrates through bioinformatics and molecular cloning means. Phylogenetic analyses showed that this novel protein is homologous to the previously identified PRL. A receptor transactivation assay further showed that this novel protein could bind to PRL receptor to trigger the downstream post-receptor event, indicating that it is biologically active. In view of its close phylogenetic relationship with PRL and also its ability to activate PRL receptor, we name it as PRL2 and the previously identified PRL as PRL1. All the newly discovered PRL2 sequences possess three conserved disulfide linkages with the exception of the shark PRL2 which has only two. In sharp contrast to the classical PRL1 which is predominantly expressed in the pituitary, PRL2 was found to be mainly expressed in the eye and brain of the zebrafish but not in the pituitary. A largely reduced inner nuclear layer of the retina was observed after morpholino knockdown of zebrafish PRL2, indicating its role on retina development in teleost. SIGNIFICANCE:The discovery of this novel PRL has revitalized our understanding on the evolution of the GH/PRL/SL/PL gene family. Its unique expression and functions in the zebrafish eye also provide a new avenue of research on the neuroendocrine control of retina development in vertebrates
