On Quantifying Local Geometric Structures of Fiber Tracts
International audienceIn diffusion MRI, fiber tracts, represented by densely distributed 3D curves, can be estimated from diffusion weighted images using tractography. The spatial geometric structure of white matter fiber tracts is known to be complex in human brain, but it carries intrinsic information of human brain. In this paper, inspired by studies of liquid crystals, we propose tract-based director field analysis (tDFA) with total six rotationally invariant scalar indices to quantify local geometric structures of fiber tracts. The contributions of tDFA include: 1) We propose orientational order (OO) and orientational dispersion (OD) indices to quantify the degree of alignment and dispersion of fiber tracts; 2) We define the local orthogonal frame for a set of unoriented curves, which is proved to be a generalization of the Frenet frame defined for a single oriented curve; 3) With the local orthogonal frame, we propose splay, bend, and twist indices to quantify three types of orientational distortion of local fiber tracts, and a total distortion index to describe distortions of all three types. The proposed tDFA for fiber tracts is a generalization of the voxel-based DFA (vDFA) which was recently proposed for a spherical function field (i.e., an ODF field). To our knowledge, this is the first work to quantify orientational distortion (splay, bend, twist, and total distortion) of fiber tracts. Experiments show that the proposed scalar indices are useful descriptors of local geometric structures to visualize and analyze fiber tracts
Experimental demonstration of a hyper-entangled ten-qubit Schr\"odinger cat state
Coherent manipulation of an increasing number of qubits for the generation of
entangled states has been an important goal and benchmark in the emerging field
of quantum information science. The multiparticle entangled states serve as
physical resources for measurement-based quantum computing and high-precision
quantum metrology. However, their experimental preparation has proved extremely
challenging. To date, entangled states up to six, eight atoms, or six photonic
qubits have been demonstrated. Here, by exploiting both the photons'
polarization and momentum degrees of freedom, we report the creation of
hyper-entangled six-, eight-, and ten-qubit Schr\"odinger cat states. We
characterize the cat states by evaluating their fidelities and detecting the
presence of genuine multi-partite entanglement. Small modifications of the
experimental setup will allow the generation of various graph states up to ten
qubits. Our method provides a shortcut to expand the effective Hilbert space,
opening up interesting applications such as quantum-enhanced super-resolving
phase measurement, graph-state generation for anyonic simulation and
topological error correction, and novel tests of nonlocality with

Pyrazolo-triazolo-pyrimidines as adenosine receptor antagonists: Effect of the N-5 bond type on the affinity and selectivity at the four adenosine receptor subtypes
In the last few years, many efforts have been made to search for potent and selective human A3 adenosine antagonists. In particular, one of the most promising human A3 adenosine receptor antagonists is represented by the pyrazolo-triazolo-pyrimidine family. This class of compounds has been strongly investigated from the point of view of structure-activity relationships. In particular, it has been observed that fundamental requisites for having both potency and selectivity at the human A3 adenosine receptors are the presence of a small substituent at the N8 position and an unsubstitued phenyl carbamoyl moiety at the N5 position. In this study, we report the role of the N5-bond type on the affinity and selectivity at the four adenosine receptor subtypes. The observed structure-activity relationships of this class of antagonists are also exhaustively rationalized using the recently published ligand-based homology modeling approach
Preventing packaging of translatable P5-associated DNA contaminants in recombinant AAV vector preps
Recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) vectors are increasingly being used for clinical gene transfer and have shown great potential for the treatment of several monogenic disorders. However, contaminant DNA from producer plasmids can be packaged into rAAV alongside the intended expression cassette-containing vector genome. The consequences of this are unknown. Our analysis of rAAV preps revealed abundant contaminant sequences upstream of the AAV replication (Rep) protein driving promoter, P5, on the Rep-Cap producer plasmid. Characterization of P5-associated contaminants after infection showed transfer, persistence, and transcriptional activity in AAV-transduced murine hepatocytes, in addition to in vitro evidence suggestive of integration. These contaminants can also be efficiently translated and immunogenic, revealing previously unrecognized side effects of rAAV-mediated gene transfer. P5-associated contaminant packaging and activity were independent of an inverted terminal repeat (ITR)-flanked vector genome. To prevent incorporation of these potentially harmful sequences, we constructed a modified P5-promoter (P5-HS), inserting a DNA spacer between an Rep binding site and an Rep nicking site in P5. This prevented upstream DNA contamination regardless of transgene or AAV serotype, while maintaining vector yield. Thus, we have constructed an rAAV production plasmid that improves vector purity and can be implemented across clinical rAAV applications. Amyand's Hernia – Case Report and Review of the Literature
Amyand's hernia is an extremely rare condition in which the appendix is positioned in the inguinal hernia sac. Acute appendicitis is much less common in this situation and few reports are found in the literature. We report a case of acute appendicitis with the tip of the appendix incarcerated outside the external ring of the right groin. A mobilized cecum and ascending colon were noticed during surgery. We conducted a review of the literature, emphasizing possible causes and suggesting a predisposing factor for the condition

Fully gapped topological surface states in BiSe films induced by a d-wave high-temperature superconductor
Topological insulators are a new class of materials, that exhibit robust
gapless surface states protected by time-reversal symmetry. The interplay
between such symmetry-protected topological surface states and symmetry-broken
states (e.g. superconductivity) provides a platform for exploring novel quantum
phenomena and new functionalities, such as 1D chiral or helical gapless
Majorana fermions, and Majorana zero modes which may find application in
fault-tolerant quantum computation. Inducing superconductivity on topological
surface states is a prerequisite for their experimental realization. Here by
growing high quality topological insulator BiSe films on a d-wave
superconductor BiSrCaCuO using molecular beam epitaxy,
we are able to induce high temperature superconductivity on the surface states
of BiSe films with a large pairing gap up to 15 meV. Interestingly,
distinct from the d-wave pairing of BiSrCaCuO, the
proximity-induced gap on the surface states is nearly isotropic and consistent
with predominant s-wave pairing as revealed by angle-resolved photoemission
spectroscopy. Our work could provide a critical step toward the realization of

If players are sparse social dilemmas are too: Importance of percolation for evolution of cooperation
Spatial reciprocity is a well known tour de force of cooperation promotion. A
thorough understanding of the effects of different population densities is
therefore crucial. Here we study the evolution of cooperation in social
dilemmas on different interaction graphs with a certain fraction of vacant
nodes. We find that sparsity may favor the resolution of social dilemmas,
especially if the population density is close to the percolation threshold of
the underlying graph. Regardless of the type of the governing social dilemma as
well as particularities of the interaction graph, we show that under pairwise
imitation the percolation threshold is a universal indicator of how dense the
occupancy ought to be for cooperation to be optimally promoted. We also
demonstrate that myopic updating, due to the lack of efficient spread of
information via imitation, renders the reported mechanism dysfunctional, which

High dose fluconazole in salvage therapy for HIV-uninfected cryptococcal meningitis.
BACKGROUND: The 2010 Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) guidelines for management of cryptococcal diseases recommend high dose fluconazole (≥ 800 mg/day), either alone or with other antifungal drugs, as alternative anticryptococcal choices. But evidence for its use in the treatment of HIV-uninfected cryptococcal meningitis (CM) remains sparse. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of HIV-uninfected CM patients who received fluconazole 800 mg/day for salvage therapy from January 2011 to December 2016 at Huashan Hospital, Shanghai, China was performed. Efficacy and safety were assessed, and mortality and prognostic factors evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 44 patients were studied including 19 refractory to amphotericin B induction therapy, 8 refractory to fluconazole consolidation therapy (400 mg/d), and 17 intolerant of antifungal drugs. For salvage, 11 patients received triple therapy of high dose fluconazole, amphotericin B and flucytosine, 20 received dual therapy of high dose fluconazole and flucytosine, 13 received monotherapy of high dose fluconazole. Median duration of high dose fluconazole in salvage regimens was 136.5 days (range, 1-667 days). Clinical response rates were 72.1% (31/43) and 83.7% (36/43) when assessed at 2 weeks and the end of salvage therapy, respectively. Adverse events possibly related to high dose fluconazole occurred in 54.5% (24/44) of the patients, and all were mild or moderate. From the initiation of salvage therapy, 1-year all-cause mortality was 13.6% (6 of 44 patients) among the study population with no significant difference in refractory or intolerant patients. CONCLUSIONS: Adherence to guideline recommendations of high dose fluconazole, alone or in combination with other antifungals, was safe and often effective for salvage therapy of HIV-uninfected CM patients
The Impact of Parenting Styles, Peers, and Teachers on Internet Usage and Addiction among Secondary School Students in Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Ibrahim
The internet usage and addiction of the students has been the area of concern since internet has been used in teaching and learning approach in this new era. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify the influences of parenting styles, peers, and teachers on internet usage and addiction among secondary school students in Johor, Malaysia. This research was carried out using a quantitative method in which 200 students from ages 13 to 17 were selected randomly to take part in answering the survey form. The number of respondents was determined by using Krejcie and Morgan (1970) method of sampling. The survey form was divided into five parts, Part A demography, Part B internet usage and addiction, Part C influences of parenting styles, Part D influences of peers, and Part E influences of teachers. The reliability and validity for each of the variables were measured using Cronbach’s alpha where all four variables are said to have α > 0.5. Part B with (α= 0.883), Part C (α= 0.851), Part D (α= 0.744), and Part E with (α= 0.695). Based on the findings, it has been identified that the most dominant factor of parenting style is the permissive style as it has the highest value of mean, 3.72 compared to authoritarian (3.32), authoritative (3.52), and neglectful (3.25). This study showed that the involvement level of peers is moderate with the mean value of 3.42 and as well as teachers’ involvement (3.24). While parenting styles, peers, and teachers are good predictors of internet usage and addiction among secondary school students. with the value F (2,97) = 35.24 P<0.05. These three independent variables, which are parenting styles, peers, and teachers predicted internet usage and addiction among secondary school students. Given this, all three variables (e.g., parenting styles, and peers and teachers) have an impact on students' addiction to the internet. The implications of the study where it could raise parents’ and public awareness and understanding to minimize internet addiction among the younger generation. While for students, it can boost their self-esteem to prevent peer pressure, which can lead to internet addiction. With the limitation of this study, further research could be conducted especially on how parents and educators could monitor and control the internet usage, also the effects of internet addiction to students’ mental health
