    Prochloron research

The purpose was to prepare Prochloron photosynthetic membranes for the isolation of the two major chlorophyll-proteins, the P700-chlorophyll a-protein and the light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b-protein, using SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The prepared proteins (purified) were examined for their cross-reactivity to polyclonal antibodies prepared from higher plant proteins. In addition, material was prepared for electron microscopy, and isolation of the DNA for determination of its general complexity (COT analysis) and similarity to barley chloroplast DNA and Anabaena DNA by using restriction-endonuclease analysis. Kleinschmidt spreads of the DNA were in the electron microscope to identify and measure the extent and size of the circlar DNA

    On the constrained KP hierarchy

An explanation for the so-called constrained hierarhies is presented by linking them with the symmetries of the KP hierarchy. While the existence of ordinary symmetries (belonging to the hierarchy) allows one to reduce the KP hierarchy to the KdV hierarchies, the existence of additional symmetries allows to reduce KP to the constrained KP.Comment: 7pp, LaTe

A simple mean field equation for condensates in the BEC-BCS crossover regime

We present a mean field approach based on pairs of fermionic atoms to describe condensates in the BEC-BCS crossover regime. By introducing an effective potential, the mean field equation allows us to calculate the chemical potential, the equation of states and the atomic correlation function. The results agree surprisingly well with recent quantum Monte Carlo calculations. We show that the smooth crossover from the bosonic mean field repulsion between molecules to the Fermi pressure among atoms is associated with the evolution of the atomic correlation function

Dominant moving species in the formation of amorphous NiZr by solid-state reaction

The displacements of W and Hf markers have been monitored by backscattering of MeV He to study the growth of the amorphous NiZr phase by solid-state reaction. We find that the Ni is the dominant moving species in this reaction

The role of UV in crab spider signals: effects on perception by prey and predators

Australian crab spiders Thomisus spectabilis sit on the petals of flowers and ambush prey such as honeybees. White-coloured T. spectabilis reflect in the UV (UV+ spiders) and previous research has shown that their presence, curiously, attracts honeybees to daisies. We applied an UV-absorber (Parsol¼) to create UV-absorbing (UV–) spiders that did not reflect any light below 395 nm wavelength. These physical changes of visual signals generated by crab spiders caused honeybees to avoid flowers with UV– spiders on their petals. They also affected the perception of UV– spiders by honeybees and a potential avian predator (blue tits). Compared to UV+ spiders, UV– spiders produced less excitation of the UV-photoreceptors in honeybees and blue tits, which translated into a reduced UV-receptor contrast and a reduced overall colour contrast between UV– spiders and daisy petals. Our results reveal that a clean physical elimination of reflection in the UV range affects perception in predators and prey and ultimately changes the behaviour of prey.7 page(s

Hole spin relaxation in semiconductor quantum dots

Hole spin relaxation time due to the hole-acoustic phonon scattering in GaAs quantum dots confined in quantum wells along (001) and (111) directions is studied after the exact diagonalization of Luttinger Hamiltonian. Different effects such as strain, magnetic field, quantum dot diameter, quantum well width and the temperature on the spin relaxation time are investigated thoroughly. Many features which are quite different from the electron spin relaxation in quantum dots and quantum wells are presented with the underlying physics elaborated.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
