Explaining How Deep Neural Networks Forget by Deep Visualization

Explaining the behaviors of deep neural networks, usually considered as black boxes, is critical especially when they are now being adopted over diverse aspects of human life. Taking the advantages of interpretable machine learning (interpretable ML), this paper proposes a novel tool called Catastrophic Forgetting Dissector (or CFD) to explain catastrophic forgetting in continual learning settings. We also introduce a new method called Critical Freezing based on the observations of our tool. Experiments on ResNet articulate how catastrophic forgetting happens, particularly showing which components of this famous network are forgetting. Our new continual learning algorithm defeats various recent techniques by a significant margin, proving the capability of the investigation. Critical freezing not only attacks catastrophic forgetting but also exposes explainability.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2001.0157

THE EFFECTS OF CHARACTERISTICS OF CORPORATE BLOG ON TOURISTS’ LODGING INTENTION: AN EXAMPLE OF BED AND BREAKFAST

Tourists may rely on external information to make various decisions. By understanding the relation between information source characteristics and decision making, tourist operators can improve their communication performance and marketing efforts. Some businesses use corporate blog as a communication platform to engage their customers with the companies. Researches about the causal relationship between corporate blog and business marketing performance, yet, are scant. A theoretical model was built based on a set of distinct characteristics of corporate blogs identified from existing literature. A questionnaire survey was conducted to test this model. Based on 143 samples collected, this study found that vividness, interactivity of the blogs impact B&Bs’ lodging intention via the mediation of the sense of intimacy; and that direction of product reviews posted in the blogs directly impacts the lodging intention. Finally, managerial and academic implications are offered

Background/PurposeEhlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous connective tissue disorder characterized by hyperextensibility of the skin, hypermobility of joints, and tissue fragility. This retrospective study analyzed the characteristics of patients with EDS.MethodsReview of medical records identified 16 cases of EDS during the study period from November 1997 to October 2002. Data on these patients, including clinical presentation, physical examinations, Beighton score, echocardiogram, bone mineral density findings and clinical classification, were analyzed.ResultsThe age of the patients ranged from 13 months to 36 years. All patients had skin hyperextensibility, joint hypermobility (Beighton score > 5 points), and tissue fragility. Complete bone mineral density study was performed in 11 patients and revealed that all had osteoporosis. Echocardiographic study was performed in 14 patients and showed aortic root dilatation/valve prolapse in 6/14 (43%). Other common features of EDS had the following prevalence: premature rupture of membranes in 3/16 (19%); prematurity in 3/16 (19%); neonatal hypotonia in 5/16 (31%); congenital hip dislocation in 3/16 (19%); unstable gait in 7/16 (44%); bone fracture(s) in 3/16 (19%); motor delay in 3/16 (19%); scoliosis in 3/16 (19%); short stature in 7/16 (44%); and positive family history in 8/16 (50%). All patients had a Beighton score of more than 5 points.ConclusionThe results of this study emphasize the importance of echocardiographic monitoring of aortic size and valvular condition, and assessment of bone mineral density in patients with EDS. Clinical evaluation and counseling should be undertaken prior to pregnancy in patients with EDS because of the risk from labor and vaginal delivery in patients with type IV and the inability to distinguish EDS subtypes in Taiwan due to the unavailability of biochemical assay or molecular mutation analysis as part of standard care

Bilateral Ureteral Leiomyoma With Bilateral Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction

    Get PDF
Leiomyomas are benign tumors characterized by overgrowth of visceral smooth muscle in the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and female reproductive tracts. They rarely develop in the urinary system and only 10 cases of unilateral ureteral leiomyoma (UL) have been reported since 1955. No cases of bilateral UL or ureteropelvic junction obstruction due to UL have ever been reported. We present a case of bilateral UL with bilateral ureteropelvic junction obstruction. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such case report in the English literature

Strategic Optimization of Water Reuse in Wafer Fabs via Multi-Constraint Linear Programming Technique

The risk of water shortage has been posing as a threat to water demanding industries in Taiwan, including the high-tech industries where ultrapure water is needed for the production of microchips. Such risks are especially unpredictable in the age of climate change, where more frequent extreme climate events such as prolonged droughts have sent these industries scrambling for securing water supply at a very high cost. The national policy also mandates strict water recycling standards for these high-tech plants, while the risk of water supply shortage also forces the industry to be water-conscious. However, most plants set their water recycling strategies based on experience or ‘‘rules of thumb” practices, without implementing optimization tools that can help making decisions in a more scientific approach. In this study we applied linear programming technique to optimize the water recovery path for a microchip assembly plant. A water balance diagram was formulated and completed to determine the existing water recycling performance, and the data was converted to a water flow network. The water flow network was then derived with a mathematical model to formulate a linear optimization problem. The proposed linear programming model is composed of mass balance constraints, unit specification constraints, capacity constraints as well as water quality constraints (discharge limits). The linear programming method was effectively applied to improve the efficiency of water reuse. With the installation of the regeneration units, an increase of 40.1% in the volume of reused water was predicted. The results from water cost structure also indicated that, at higher water tariff, water reuses through reclaiming and generating spent effluents can alleviate the overall water consumption costs

AbstractObjectiveTo present prenatal ultrasound and perinatal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of Galloway-Mowat syndrome.Case ReportA 31-year-old woman, gravida 3, para 2, was referred for genetic counseling at 29 weeks of gestation because of abnormal ultrasound findings and a previous child with Galloway-Mowat syndrome. During this pregnancy, microcephaly, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), and oligohydramnios were first noted at 27 weeks of gestation. Repeated ultrasounds showed microcephaly, IUGR, and oligohydramnios. MRI performed at 32 weeks of gestation showed reduced sulcation of the brain, pachygyria, poor myelination of the white matter, and cerebellar atrophy. A diagnosis of recurrent Galloway-Mowat syndrome was made. At 40 weeks of gestation, a 2,496-g female baby was delivered with microcephaly, a narrow slopping forehead, epicanthic folds, microphthalmos, a highly arched palate, a small midface, a beaked nose, thin lips, large low-set floppy ears, clenched hands, and arachnodactyly. Postnatal MRI findings were consistent with the prenatal diagnosis. Renal ultrasound showed enlarged bilateral kidneys with increased echogenicity. At the age of 2 weeks, the infant became edematous and developed nephrotic syndrome.ConclusionMicrocephaly, IUGR, and oligohydramnios are significant ultrasound triad of fetal Galloway-Mowat syndrome. Prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of microcephaly, IUGR, and oligohydramnios in late second trimester or in early third trimester should alert clinicians to the possibility of Galloway-Mowat syndrome and prompt a detailed search of abnormal sulcation, cortical gyral maldevelopment, and cerebellar atrophy by fetal ultrafast MRI

Analysis of genetic structure and function of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats loci in 110 Enterococcus strains

Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and their CRISPR-associated proteins (Cas) are an adaptive immune system involved in specific defenses against the invasion of foreign mobile genetic elements, such as plasmids and phages. This study aims to analyze the gene structure and to explore the function of the CRISPR system in the Enterococcus genome, especially with regard to drug resistance. The whole genome information of 110 enterococci was downloaded from the NCBI database to analyze the distribution and the structure of the CRISPR-Cas system including the Cas gene, repeat sequences, and spacer sequence of the CRISPR-Cas system by bioinformatics methods, and to find drug resistance-related genes and analyze the relationship between them and the CRISPR-Cas system. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) of enterococci was performed against the reference MLST database. Information on the drug resistance of Enterococcus was retrieved from the CARD database, and its relationship to the presence or absence of CRISPR was statistically analyzed. Among the 110 Enterococcus strains, 39 strains (35.45%) contained a complete CRISPR-Cas system, 87 CRISPR arrays were identified, and 62 strains contained Cas gene clusters. The CRISPR system in the Enterococcus genome was mainly type II-A (59.68%), followed by type II-C (33.87%). The phylogenetic analysis of the cas1 gene sequence was basically consistent with the typing of the CRISPR-Cas system. Of the 74 strains included in the study for MLST typing, only 19 (25.68%) were related to CRISPR-Cas typing, while the majority of the strains (74.32%) of MLST typing were associated with the untyped CRISPR system. Additionally, the CRISPR-Cas system may only be related to the carrying rate of some drug-resistant genes and the drug-resistant phenotype. In conclusion, the distribution of the enterococcus CRISPR-Cas system varies greatly among different species and the presence of CRISPR loci reduces the horizontal transfer of some drug resistance genes
