    On the variable capacity property of CC/DS-CDMA systems

    A complete complementary code based direct sequence code division multiple access (CC/DS-CDMA) system has been proposed recently as a potential candidate for beyond third generation (B3G) wireless communications. This paper addresses the issues that design of efficient code assignment schemes should be based on a flexible physical layer support, which is extremely important for emerging cross-layer designs in future wireless applications. The study in this paper considers a CC/DS-CDMA system with multiple time slots, three traffic classes and two dynamic code-flock assignment schemes, namely random assignment (RA) and compact assignment (CA). Simulation results show that the CC/DS-CDMA system has variable capacity property (VCP), which is sensitively affected by different code-flock assignment schemes. In general, CA can offer lower blocking probability, whereas RA can offer a larger mean system capacity and higher throughput when offered traffic is heavy

    Multimedia stream service provided by broadband wireless networks has emerged as an important technology and has attracted much attention. An all-IP network architecture with reliable high-throughput air interface makes orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access (OFDMA)-based mobile worldwide interoperability for microwave access (mobile WiMAX) a viable technology for wireless multimedia services, such as voice over IP (VoIP), mobile TV, and so on. One of the main features in a WiMAX MAC layer is that it can provide'differentiated services among different traffic categories with individual QoS requirements. In this article, we first give an overview of the key aspects of WiMAX and describe multimedia broadcast multicast service (MBMS) architecture of the 3GPP. Then, we propose a multicast and broadcast service (MBS) architecture for WiMAX that is based on MBMS. Moreover, we enhance the MBS architecture for mobile WiMAX to overcome the shortcoming of limited video broadcast performance over the baseline MBS model. We also give examples to demonstrate that the proposed architecture can support better mobility and offer higher power efficiency

    Theory and design of uniform concentric circular arrays with frequency invariant characteristics

    This paper proposes a new digital beamformer for uniform concentric circular array (UCCA) having nearly frequency invariant (FI) characteristics. The basic principle is to transform the received signals to the phase mode and remove the frequency dependency of the individual phase mode through the use of a digital beamforming network. The far field pattern of the array is determined by a set of weights and it is approximately invariant over a wide range of frequencies. Compared with FI uniform circular array (UCA), FI UCCAs are able to achieve a wider bandwidth. Design examples are given to demonstrate the principle of the proposed UCCA-FIB and its application to broadband DOA estimation of coherent sources. © 2005 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    An intelligent genetic algorithm for PAPR reduction in a multi-carrier CDMA wireless system

    Abstract— A novel intelligent genetic algorithm (GA), called Minimum Distance guided GA (MDGA) is proposed for peak-average-power ratio (PAPR) reduction based on partial transmit sequence (PTS) scheme in a synchronous Multi-Carrier Code Division Multiple Access (MC-CDMA) system. In contrast to traditional GA, our MDGA starts with a balanced ratio of exploration and exploitation which is maintained throughout the process. It introduces a novel replacement strategy which increases significantly the convergence rate and reduce dramatically computational complexity as compared to the conventional GA. The simulation results demonstrate that, if compared to the PAPR reduction schemes using exhaustive search and traditional GA, our scheme achieves 99.52% and 50+% reduction in computational complexity respectively

    Risk control in recycled water schemes

    Recycled water is becoming one of the indispensable and reliable water resources at present. When it is introduced as an alternative source, risks on human health and the environment become major constraints driving the application and extension of recycled water. The authors examine the sources and associated risks of recycled water and introduce the practical risk control technologies on various end uses. They also review some existing risk assessment models by comparing their strengths and weaknesses toward the good approach of integrated modeling.     IEEE 802.11n MAC frame aggregation mechanisms for next-generation high-throughput WLANs [Medium access control protocols for wireless LANs]

    IEEE 802.11n is an ongoing next-generation wireless LAN standard that supports a very highspeed connection with more than 100 Mb/s data throughput measured at the medium access control layer. This article investigates the key MAC enhancements that help 802.11n achieve high throughput and high efficiency. A detailed description is given for various frame aggregation mechanisms proposed in the latest 802.11n draft standard. Our simulation results confirm that A-MSDU, A-MPDU, and a combination of these methods improve extensively the channel efficiency and data throughput. We analyze the performance of each frame aggregation scheme in distinct scenarios, and we conclude that overall, the two-level aggregation is the most efficacious
