Visualising ergonomics data for design
Existing ergonomics data are not effectively used by designers; this is mainly because the data are not presented in a designer-friendly format. In order to help designers make better use of ergonomics data, we explored the potential of representing existing ergonomics data in a more dynamic and visual way, and making them look more relevant to design. The Cambridge Engineering Selector (CES) was adopted to turn static ergonomics data into manipulative and comparative data sets. Contextual information in a visual format was added; clearer illustrations and scenarios relevant to design were developed; design case studies were compiled and linked to the relevant ergonomics data sets – the process resulted in a new design support tool: the ErgoCES. The tool was consequently brought to both design students and professionals for evaluation. The results suggested that the ErgoCES had helped making ergonomics data more accessible to designers, and many new features (e.g. scenarios and case studies) were highly valued by the designers. Among the participants, 100% of the design students and 79% of the professionals indicated that they would use the tool when it becomes widely available.The research project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, Grant EP/F0 32145/1. Density Functional Theory Studies of Magnetically Confined Fermi Gas
A theory is developed for magnetically confined Fermi gas at low temperature
based on the density functional theory. The theory is illustrated by numerical
calculation of density distributions of Fermi atoms K with parameters
according to DeMarco and Jin's experiment[Science, 285(1999)1703]. Our results
are in good agreement with the experiment. To check the theory, we also
performed calculations using our theory at high temperature and compared very
well to the result of classical limit.Comment: 6 page
High efficiency single quantum well graded-index separate-confinement heterostructure lasers fabricated with MeV oxygen ion implantation
Single quantum well AlGaAs/GaAs graded-index separate-confinement heterostructure lasers have been fabricated using MeV oxygen ion implantation plus optimized subsequent thermal annealing. A high differential quantum efficiency of 85% has been obtained in a 360-µm-long and 10-µm-wide stripe geometry device. The results have also demonstrated that excellent electrical isolation (breakdown voltage of over 30 V) and low threshold currents (22 mA) can be obtained with MeV oxygen ion isolation. It is suggested that oxygen ion implantation induced selective carrier compensation and compositional disordering in the quantum well region as well as radiation-induced lattice disordering in AlxGa1–xAs/GaAs may be mostly responsible for the buried layer modification in this fabrication process
Designing dual-plate meteoroid shields: A new analysis
Physics governing ultrahigh velocity impacts onto dual-plate meteor armor is discussed. Meteoroid shield design methodologies are considered: failure mechanisms, qualitative features of effective meteoroid shield designs, evaluating/processing meteoroid threat models, and quantitative techniques for optimizing effective meteoroid shield designs. Related investigations are included: use of Kevlar cloth/epoxy panels in meteoroid shields for the Halley's Comet intercept vehicle, mirror exposure dynamics, and evaluation of ion fields produced around the Halley Intercept Mission vehicle by meteoroid impacts
Intrinsic electron-doping in nominal "non-doped" superconducting (La,Y)CuO thin films grown by dc magnetron sputtering
The superconducting nominal "non-doped" (LYCO) thin
films are successfully prepared by dc magnetron-sputtering and in situ
post-annealing in vacuum. The best more than 13K is achieved in the
optimal LYCO films with highly pure c-axis oriented T'-type structure. In the
normal state, the quasi-quadratic temperature dependence of resistivity, the
negative Hall coefficient and effect of oxygen content in the films are quite
similar to the typical Ce-doped T'-214 cuprates, suggesting that T'-LYCO shows
the electron-doping nature like known n-type cuprates, and is not a band
superconductor as proposed previously. The charge carriers are considered to be
induced by oxygen deficiency.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure
Are Giant Planets Forming Around HR 4796A?
We have obtained FUSE and HST STIS spectra of HR 4796A, a nearby 8 Myr old
main sequence star that possesses a dusty circumstellar disk whose inclination
has been constrained from high resolution near-infrared observations to be ~17
deg from edge-on. We searched for circumstellar absorption in the ground states
of C II at 1036.3 A, O I at 1039.2 A, Zn II at 2026.1 A, Lyman series H2, and
CO (A-X) and failed to detect any of these species. We place upper limits on
the column densities and infer upper limits on the gas masses assuming that the
gas is in hydrostatic equilibrium, is well-mixed, and has a temperature, Tgas ~
65 K. Our measurements suggest that this system possesses very little molecular
gas. Therefore, we infer an upper limit for the gas:dust ratio (<4.0) assuming
that the gas is atomic. We measure less gas in this system than is required to

Direction-of-Arrival Estimation Based on Sparse Recovery with Second-Order Statistics
Traditional direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation techniques perform Nyquist-rate sampling of the received signals and as a result they require high storage. To reduce sampling ratio, we introduce level-crossing (LC) sampling which captures samples whenever the signal crosses predetermined reference levels, and the LC-based analog-to-digital converter (LC ADC) has been shown to efficiently sample certain classes of signals. In this paper, we focus on the DOA estimation problem by using second-order statistics based on the LC samplings recording on one sensor, along with the synchronous samplings of the another sensors, a sparse angle space scenario can be found by solving an minimization problem, giving the number of sources and their DOA's. The experimental results show that our proposed method, when compared with some existing norm-based constrained optimization compressive sensing (CS) algorithms, as well as subspace method, improves the DOA estimation performance, while using less samples when compared with Nyquist-rate sampling and reducing sensor activity especially for long time silence signal
