On the Nochka-Chen-Ru-Wong Proof of Cartan's Conjecture

    Get PDF
In 1982-83, E. Nochka proved a conjecture of Cartan on defects of holomorphic curves in Pn\Bbb P^n relative to a possibly degenerate set of hyperplanes. This was further explained by W. Chen in his 1987 thesis, and subseqently simplified by M. Ru and P.-M. Wong in 1991. The proof involved assigning weights to the hyperplanes. This paper provides a mild simplification of the proof of the construction of the weights, by construing the ``Nochka diagram'' of Ru and Wong as a convex hull.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure. Solitons in the one-dimensional forest fire model

Fires in the one-dimensional Bak-Chen-Tang forest fire model propagate as solitons, resembling shocks in Burgers turbulence. The branching of solitons, creating new fires, is balanced by the pair-wise annihilation of oppositely moving solitons. Two distinct, diverging length scales appear in the limit where the growth rate of trees, pp, vanishes. The width of the solitons, ww, diverges as a power law, 1/p1/p, while the average distance between solitons diverges much faster as dexp(π2/12p) d \sim \exp({\pi}^2/12p).Comment: 4 pages with 2 figures include

A modification of the Chen-Nester quasilocal expressions

Chen and Nester proposed four boundary expressions for the quasilocal quantities using the covariant Hamiltonian formalism. Based on these four expressions, there is a simple generalization that one can consider, so that a two parameter set of boundary expressions can be constructed. Using these modified expressions, a nice result for gravitational energy-momentum can be obtained in holonomic frames.Comment: 11 page
